3597LMTHD Waypoint Symbols not handled in BASECAMP or GARMIN EXPRESS

Basecamp (and Mapsource) has nice Waypoint/POI symbols and the symbols were compatible. The new 3597LMTHD has a new symbol set which is not nearly as nice...but that's not the problem.
Problem: If I load the 3597 (with waypoints in "My Places" with pertinent symbols) to BASECAMP or backup with GARMIN EXPRESS, I lose all symbols except a flag. Reversely, if I load from BASECAMP or a GARMIN EXPRESS backup TO the 3597, I also lose the symbols. So, in summary, the GARMIN EXPRESS will not handle the 3597LMTHD symbols in the backup/restore, nor will BASECAMP. Has anyone found a way to resolve this or am I doing something wrong?
