Keeping the Windmill Alive - Your last trip? – May 2013

In danger of losing your windmill?

Maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go (like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.)

Anything to keep your windmill alive.

This thread will be closed on the last day of the month and a new one will be opened.

Road Trip

Drove from Florida to Indiana, including a scenic, back country road side trip, guided the whole way by my trusty old nuvi 660, listening to mp3's played through the car's stereo. grin

Great trip!

We'll probably be heading back the end of next week.

Cross Country and Back

Just got back from a six month plus cross country trip.
We used two GPS (both Garmins)to help navigate us.

I won't say we couldn't have done it without them, but they were invaluable tools that made the trip less stressful and more enjoyable.

One of the Garmins we were able to download our personalized route. The other Garmin we used for the alternate route and to find points of interest with.

When I bought our newest Garmin, I didn't realize the model I purchased did not have the capability of making a personalized route (I thought they all did), but did have lifetime maps.

Portable speed cameras popping up everywhere

Yesterday I took a side road to get to a local College and found 3 portable speed cameras. I guess students are always in a hurry to get off class and more prone to get a speeding ticket.

But 3 cameras on one street of only 1.1 miles? That was outrageous...

TN, GA, AL, MS

The use of GPS was limited except when needing specific locations and ETA's.

New Home

Recently bought a new home in a different town and have been using my Garmin to find restaurants, stores, etc.

A real looooong trip

Just recently left my winter home on the Pacific ocean south of Puerto Vallarta in Mexico.

Drove north to Laredo,Tx and from there east to New Orleans where I spent a few days.

From there I left to make my way to the Blue Ridge Parkway which starts in Virginia and ends in North Carolina for a total of 469 miles. I split this into a 2 day trip.

The Blue Ridge Parkway was pretty empty and accommodations along the route are sparse. In this case the GPS POI's came in handy to guide me off the Pkwy to a small town for an overnight stay, there are no accommodations right on the Pkwy.

From the end of the Pkwy I made my way north to Detroit and the Ambassador bridge to go home.

I did a total of 3780 miles or 6017 km on this trip and took 11 days. About $ 230.00 in Diesel fuel and seven motel/hotel overnights, 3 nights in NOLA. My average fuel used works out to 45 Mpg US.

In most cases the Garmin worked well, but there were a few instances where the Garmin p***ed me off royally. As long as I drive in Mexico I have the Garmin set to use toll roads. While I have it set for the fastest route and avoid toll roads in the USA, several times it wanted to take me on a route through some towns (loop roads???) rather than staying on the interstate. Of course those would be much slower and have traffic lights to contend with. After the first time this happened I just zoomed out on the screen and saw what was happening and ignored the proffered "advice" and had to put up with constant recalculating sounds.

A year ago on my home-bound drive the 3790 crapped out on me in Kansas City and for that reason this year I had my trusty old 855 with me but did not have to resort to using it.

Now at home trying to get used to the colder temps, all winter long I live in 85 degree solid sunshine every day.

It got real windy and it took off like a helicopter smile

I have the volume muted most of the time when I take a trip. I don't want to hear all the jibberish all the time. I unmute when I really want the turn by turn directions.

Yes there is, 54 Mpg Imperial!
Which is damned good for a car loaded down and many mountainous areas traversed. Trunk and backseat full.

Visited cities that I haven't been too for many years, I have found that after all the the things that I find wrong with the GPS it has really been good, it may not have taken the best route, but it always got me to the destination,GPS's work really well.

It was a thrill primarily for my 4-year-old son, who's really into trains! I would recommend it on my own, however.
