Screen Calibrations

Was on a trip earlier today when a friends garmin was started only to ask press here showing an x and y axis line on a small circle. After its pressed the point moves and asks to press again. After 12 or so I thought the system was faulty and looked to power off reset the unit. Starting the process all over. After about 15 calibration point entries it finally said calibration complete. I have never seen this on any of my three units. If it told you what to expect at start up it would have been fine, but not knowing how many calibrations would be required was of concern. Any one else experienced this. My friend had not used his unit for 3 or more months.

Something may be sticking

Could it be a sticky power switch or constant pressure on the screen (possibly if the case was opened, then closed again with something stuck between the case and display)? If so, the device may be thinking you want to calibrate it:

What Model Was It?

What was your friends Nuvi model number?

Some Nuvi models are very tricky to get to the calibration screen.

Calibration

It should only take 6 key presses of dots to recalibrate a touchscreen. If it takes more than that and the recalibration process starts over, then I would suspect an intermittent or drifting touchscreen.

There are limit ranges in the firmware that know what the outer edge coordinates should be. When you calibrate the touchscreen, the coordinates should be within the range of these limits. If not, the calibration process is ignored and starts over.

The touchscreen may be failing.

Jim, I have a 765T and when I read 6 presses, I had the feeling it was more than that on my unit.

I just checked the 765T and I pressed 11 dots.

Calibration

Interesting. Before I made that comment, I too recalibrated my Nuvi 765T with v4.5 firmare and the count for me was (6) just like all of my other Nuvi's.

6 Presses For Me

I just recalibrated both my 660 and 2460, if done correctly only required 6 presses.

I did screw up on my first attempt on the 2460 and it took more than 6. I think I inaccurately pressed the first dot wrong. I did the calibration again and this time it was six.

@jgermann
Could you please try the calibration again and verify that 11 presses were required on your 765, it would be interesting to know that models calibration requires more than other models. Could this mean the 765 has a more accurate touchscreen?

Same thing

I got the same count - 11.

We need other to give us their data. Doesn't hurt anything to re-calibrate and might make navigation a little easier.

6

2460 took 6 touches to complete.

That is quite interesting. Having once owned a 765T I can't recall how many presses it took.
Jim says 6 pushes, yours takes 11, different amounts in same model. It would be good to hear from others with the 765.

Interesting ...

My Nuvi 2555LMT requires 12 dot presses to complete the calibration.

Tried 3 separate times to be sure ... all same results.

EDIT: Tried again after reading the following post from CraigW ... only 6 this time?

Then 2 more times ... 12 then 6 again.

My results

jgermann wrote:

295W: 5 (tested twice with same results)
750: 6
855: 6
2460: 12/12/6 (tested twice with result of 12, then based on muell9k's earlier reply, tested again with a result of 6)

All in all, my 2460 results along with those from muell9k may confirm that if the nuvi thinks there's a user error in picking a dot, it adds extra calibration points.

6 Presses..

I have a older 1300 model and it only took 6 dot presses to recalibrate mine.

I'm not really lost.... just temporarily misplaced!

Sounds reasonable.

Based on my additional (EDIT) tests above , this would make sense.

Best Method to Calibrate

I think when calibrating it would be best to use a stylus or pencil eraser to obtain more precise contact points. On my first attempt I got lazy and used my fat finger.

Pencil eraser works fine ...

Only 6 dot presses required each time.

nuvi 755T

11 dots. Tried several times, always 11.
