Updating Maps on My nuvi 760

I downloaded the latest map update, with Garmin Express, to my 2GB SD card and was only able to load the lower 48 because of a lack of space. I just bought a 4GB card and it is telling me the same thing.

When I try to select all maps the continue button is grayed out. When I used the old update system, before Garmin Express, I was able to do complete maps with the 2GB card.

I looked on this site and it looked like my 760 would support 4GB SD cards.

Hmm

My nuvi 750 should update to SD identically to your 760 and at the last update (2013.40), I was able to install all of North America to a 4GB SD card. I see that the map image file is almost 1.9GB* in size so a 2GB card is really flirting with disaster and unlikely to work with the 2014.10 map due out next week or so. In fact, I think a 2GB SD card can actually use about 1.8GB so that explains your 2GB less-than-all-North_America problem.

Yes, a 4GB will work well with the 7x0 series.

Your problem may have occurred due to using Garmin Express. Personally, what I'd do is uninstall Garmin Express and use GarminMapUpdater and try your update again with the 4GB SD card (copy and paste this link to your browser):

Your 760 should be offered the install-to-SD option and I can't understand why you won't be able to install all of North America. I'm really unclear as to why North America won't fit on your 4GB card unless it's another of the many issues related to Garmin Express.

Long story short--repeat the update using GarminMapUpdater rather than Garmin Express and report back. On the other hand, you could bypass a repeat 2013.40 installation since 2014.10 is due out very soon, possibly even next Tuesday--and with your 4GB card and GarminMapUpdater, you should have no problem with the full map update to the 4GB SD. Good luck and report back with your results.

*map file size for 2013.40 with all of North America:

gmapsup1.img is 1,926,368KB (1.83 GB or 1,972,600,832 bytes) and there are a few other tiny files needed as well.

follow-on question

If the maps are installed to an SD card, what file elements originally located on the GPS unit are now on the SD? I've done this with success, but on another topic used a European maps on a separate SD card. Not all features were found with the Euro maps (city searching database was missing) and I'm thinking some base files originally on the GPS were re-located on the SD card.

Updating Maps on my nuvi 760

After reinstalling the lower 49 states on the new 4GB SD card I looked around. I clicked on reinstall and full coverage of North America came up as a choice and started immediately. I can't figure why it didn't give that option in the first place.

Well done!

Now you're set for 2014.10 next week (or whenever)!
