Cool
Never used one either. The air conditioner can keep it cool on those hot summer days.

I use a vent mount for my XM satellite radio, the draw back I have is loosing one of the 2 center dashboard vents that are pointed to back of the automobile, now it takes more time to heat or cool the back of the automobile.

Mount
Just got one of these for my daughter for her Iphone and I think it should work with your Garmin, but I have not tested it. They are about 18 bucks from Amazon. It slides into the usually unused Cd player and then screws tight for a solid mount.

Arkon GN047 Removable Swivel Air Vent Mount for Garmin $5
I use the Arkon GN047 Removable Swivel Air Vent Mount for Garmin that costs $5 shipped with my 3790 LMT and it works fine and actually quite sturdy. I live in Tucson and never have had any problem with cooling the car with it mounted and has the added perk of keeping the Garmin much cooler in the summer.

I've been using one for about 5 years. I love it. The one drawback is that it is not secured very well and will come off if you knock into it. Other than that it works very well. Considering that it was an ebay special that only cost me about $3 I can't complain. Another advantage is that the location gets it out of my windshield and that makes it much less obvious to thieves.
I actually use my air vents
I actually use my air vents to position where the air goes. Seems like an air vent mount just might interfere with that.
Air Vent Mount Didn't Work For Me
I tried the air vent mount at one point. However, living in Florida and driving all the time it was not practical for me. I ended up modifying another swivel mount and custom fitted it into an extra space in my radio unit that appeared to be a business card holder. At least I couldn't think of anything else the space would have been used for. It is a Ford factory radio and my custom mount is fantastic and is nearly flush with my dash and doesn't interfere in anyway with the radio controls or other dash controls. It works perfect for me.
Use A Small Dashboard Mount
I've been using these in my vehicles for several years now. Works great. Very small and most dashboards should have enough free space to put one of these on. Cheap too.

Thanks for the link! I did not know that Garmin offered this.
Have Used
I've used a vent mount in the past. I didn't like the difficulty in removing the mount and the fact that it blocked the vent. The new Garmin mount looks like it's easier to use than the alligator type.

I was always concerned....
that heat in the winter would damage the unit. Thus, I never tried this mount.

Garmin vent mount looks like
Garmin vent mount looks like how the Tetrax magnetic one turns the knob to tighten onto the vent. Looks pretty close to the vent w/o much space for diffusing air from the vent.
I used the Arkon GN047 over this past winter and with heating. I like it very much. It sticks out more allowing more space between the vent and air and the back of the Garmin unit.
Love It
I use this one which fits my Honda vents very well. The vent mount moves it closer and easier for me to reach. It also moves it out of the sun.

Yes - some obstruction of the vents, blocking cool air in the summer. In the winter I have the heat coming in from the floor vents so it is no big deal.
This model didn't fit the vents in my 2000 Toyota Sienna all that well, and I read that this one with the springs was better than another model without springs.

It just was announced in late February and they started shipping last month so would be nice to see some reviews after people have had a chance to try it out.
This is a large view of the unit and it looks pretty sturdy and well made.

Air Vent Mount
When I owned a Camry I was able to use the vent fins to mount my Garmin using the generic vent mount attachment. However, several years ago I purchased a Sonata, which has vertical vent fins and I was no longer able to use the generic mount. I did find that pressing the prongs on my generic mount into the CD opening it worked fine and has worked great for the past few years.
Hope this helps.
Ball Size?
The size of the ball, is it the same size as the ball used by the Montana mount with the built in speaker?

Generic under 5 dollar units work
I've used the generic, under $5 vent mounts for years on a couple of different cars. Airflow is a bit restricted but nothing I can't compensate for. The units are a bit flimsy and can slip out but I've found a twist tie makes the installation permanent
Generic Vent Mount
I have been using one for my 2555. I only use this in the winter and use a 2460 in the summer. I recently switched and don't want to use my vent mount for the summer, problem is the clips don't want to come off and now they are "stuck" on the vent. I would have to cut them off in order to remove them. Any suggestions?

Replace the car? If the original mount used any type of glue, then it's probably permanent. If it used "fingers" that snapped around the blades on the vent, then you might be able to break them but in any event the vent itself would be damaged. Damaged vents are one of those "cosmetic" things that have a major affect on trade-in values.

Condensation?
I travel to area with fairly high humidity a lot. I can see the condensation comes and go a lot on car windows. Who know what will happen if I put the GPS on the air vent?

I've had to remove my vent mount a couple of times. The "finger" that extends to the rear of the vent tab has a hook on the end keeping it from sliding off. I've used a narrow blade screwdriver to press the finger rearward and up to release it. A flashlight helps. It's actually easier to do it than describe the process.
thanks I'll try that :)

This just may work perfectly...I have the sandbag dash mount and it drives me nuts sometimes on hard corners...skittering away.

Have you tried cleaning the bottom of the sandbag? After awhile it can get slippery. Just wash it with a little dish soap and rinse it off.
ordered the new Garmin Air Vent Mount & received it today
I ordered the Garmin Air Vent Mount Part Number: 010-11952-00 from Crutchfield and received it today. They do not charge sales tax and shipped via UPS for free so total was under $20.

It installed easily and is smaller than what it appears to be in the photos on the web page. It is rock solid when mounted and far more solid and much easier to mount and dismount than the Arkon GN047 I had used.

Garmin Air Vent Mount
Thank you for reporting back on this. I think Garmin's motivation on this is to have a mount that is a bit more reliable than the after-market, universal mounts. It sounds like they may have accomplished that!

"You can't get there from here"
Savor that 1490
I decided to "upgrade" from a 1490 to a 3590. Trust me; the 1490 works better, namely in traffic reporting, routing and screen brightness.
While the 3590 does incorporate some additional features, its functionality as a GPS receiver is severely diminished so much so that I've reverted to using the 1490 instead.

I ordered two garmin air vent mounts for use on a 02 taurus and 07 focus. They work easily and sturdy, you can actually get them off/on with ease, I use them with air vent closed and still had plenty of room for the clamps My vents still pass a little air when closed so a/c will work fine. Jury out on heat mode, I have to wait for next winter for this. It's a pleasure to have the 3590/2460 located this way instead of top of dash.
Ball Diameter
Can someone please measure and report the ball diameter?
I might be able to use this with my Montana mount if the ball size is correct.
Thanks in advance.

The ball diameter is 17mm and exactly the same as all the standard Garmin nuvi windshield mounts, friction dash pad, bean bag and every other Garmin mount I have had.

I would have preferred that
I would have preferred that an arm would extend the GPS unit a bit away from the vent but it does look good. I'd be tempted to get one if my Arkon breaks.
Thanks!
Hopefully that is the same size as the Montana ball/socket.
Thanks!

about the same distance as the Arkon was but way more stable

After using it a few times now the distance from the vent to the GPS unit is far enough that it really is not a problem with blocking air flow and about the same distance as the Arkon was but way more stable and firm.
The Arkon is now permanently put away in the closet.

This photo link below shows two views of my Garmin 3790LMT mounted on the new Garmin mount and you can see it does not block air to the driver or the passenger and still allows both left and right vent adjustment on the side it is mounted on. I mainly use the Garmin as a supplement to the cars nav system for hands free Bluetooth and speed and red light camera warnings.
