Has Your Computer Been Unstable After Installing Garmin Express?

While this might be purely coincidental, it seems like my home computer has been sort of unstable after I installed Garmin Express. Has anybody else here noticed this? Maybe I am way off base and this is just a coincidence. Anyway, I have uninstalled Garmin Express and I will see what happens.

Page 1>>

Absolutely ..

no problems after installing Garmin Express.

Garmin Expess won't update to latest map

I'm not sure how City Navigator NA 2013.3 got installed whether it was from Mapsource or the installation of Basecamp. I can't get basecamp to update to 2013.4 when I updated my Garmin 2460. Do you know how this is done? I still like Mapsource better.

@ hub_cap

Download Garmin Map Updater and then install the map to computer only and then 2013.40 will be accessible for both basecamp and mapsource.

Nope, not unstable at all. GE does like to suck CPU cycles, though.

Amen to that

It sucks a lot of CPU and my mouse is "jerky" when it is running. Other than that, all is well. This is why it is disabled.

Haven't installed it so

Haven't installed it so can't comment on that particular program, but as a general rule I hate, and usually disable, programs that insist they should always load at boot and then suck RAM and CPU cycles without giving the user any other options. It's particularly annoying when they're updater type programs that really only need to run once a month or so.

They're usually built by the sort of programmer who thinks that the only place to install a program is C:\Program Files and doesn't allow any variation on that. [/PetPeeve]

Garmin Express

I have Windows 7 64 bit and Garmin Express has worked wonderfully with no problems of stability on my machine.

GE

I'm pretty sure that when I installed GE it has deleted my Garmin Map updater as well as the lifetime updater.

well...

Would you all recommend I don't install it or go ahead? I haven't updated for a while on my PC anyway.

Programs Loading at Start Up

Installation is a simple process. But, as pointed out by many of the responses, you may want to disable it loading at Start Up... Not because IT causes problems, but just because it does not have to! That applies to all kinds of applications (Adobe, Java, etc.).

No Problems on My End..

Maybe you have a software conflict.

I have experienced no problems since installing Garmin Express on my 2640.

No issues

I too, have noticed no issues. When it is running, it does seem to take more CPU cycles than I would expect. But no issues with the computer with regard to stability, etc.

No

No problems on my end aswell.

Noticed something

I now have a small freeze of my computer when I open some web pages. IE reduces down to the task bar and the circle just sits there then after several seconds IE comes back up to full page.
I deleted Garmin Express so I don't know if that is something to do with it.

Express Settings Window

I noticed a new "Express Settings" window when my computer rebooted. There was nothing in it, and for a while I was afraid I had some sort of virus or malware. The small window wouldn't close, and it took me some time to figure out that I could get rid of it by closing Garmin Express. Sounds like this one is still "buggy"!

Do you really need it?

It tried to load by itself the other day and I canceled it. Reading this makes me wonder.

Windows Update Conflict -- Maybe

Not sure if it is related, but yes, after added GE I noticed that my Windows updater was constantly turning off -- I was able to fix that, but now I have to wonder if maybe there was a conflict between the 2 updaters. I also found that GE sucks to do full PC update and US & Can update on the 760, had to go back to GarminMapUpdater to do this, so for me GE is a total fail.

I'm running Win 7 Home Prem x64

No issues here either.

No issues here either.

Actually, no, but It's becaiuse.....

I remove it after the map download!

I watch for new maps here... Not with Express...

And if it's like any other garmin software, it will change before the next time I need to download maps.

Therefore, after I check the maps in the Garmin (Remember, I'm doing this on the SD Card, not the Garmin).... I remove the software because at that point it is not needed any more....

Make Sense???

no problem w/ computer, but

Installed Garmin Express. Have a Nuvi 40LM and a Nuvi 50LM which I updated two weeks ago. Plugged in the 40 and GE says new software and map. Software update was smooth and quick. Map took an agonizing 20 minutes to DL, then another 10 minutes to install. At the end, got failure notice, not enough memory. What???? I already had a 16 GB SD card installed. Asks me if I want the map on the memory card. Well, yeah, stupid, where else are you going to put it if there's not enough memory in the GPS? Unplugged the 40, plugged it back in again, and the map was installed. Why didn't GE recognize low memory and the SD card at the start? Now it's time to do the Nuvi 50LM. Software updated, no new map. What's this? Just had new map on the 40, why not the 50? Thought they were identical units with one having a larger screen. Confusing, compounded by a crappy updater.

Yes I've had issues with

Yes I've had issues with express. So be careful about installing and especially uninstalling it. It wiped out my Mapsource files when I uninstalled it using Revo. I never had that happen. Express ties into every thing associated with Garmin on your pc. Also noticed other little things. My clock is off an hour as well.

Beware and backup before you fool with Express.

Install it when you need it

nrbovee wrote:

Install it when you need it. i.e. when the "early warning" posts start showing up here as the due date for the next map update gets close. Web updater takes care of the routine firmware releases and if you check in here every week or so, you catch the posts about these too. I installed GE when the latest map release came out and let it do it's thing as it seems to go a little faster on the download. After I loaded the new map on my Nuvi, I un-installed it until the next time.

"Primum Non Nocere" 2595LMT Clear Channel and Navteq Traffic

...

I was able to use the Map Installer that I used from the previous map installation and bypass the "Express" experience. See if it is in your downloads folder from previous use.

Freezed

I had a complete computer freeze up after installing this. Granted my computer is older and running Windows XP. It only got better after I uninstalled it and did a system restore.

Garmin Nuvi 255W

Not Unstable, but...

When it is in the background, there is no problem. When I launch GE it takes a lot of the processor's time as the mouse and keyboard are less responsive.

Had problems with it!

After I installed garmin express I started having performance issues with the computer slowing down. I didn't realize what the issue was untill I spend about a week tracking down the issue. I monitored my PC with a third party process and service monitor and found out that Garmin Express seemed to have an conflict with a number of things like my HP printer drivers, my virus protection, and some updaters. I was able to replicate and unreplicate the issue by disabline garmin express. It took a lot of digging to sort this all out!

Garmin express

My computer became so unstable i had to remove it. Garmin tech support told me it does not work well with most windows xp computers

GE

I haven't noticed any issues here either. But like other have mentioned I disable it from starting automatically. If it isn't something I use everyday, I disable anything automatic.

Precisely

I do this for all invasive software that tries to take-over/configure my pc for its own use.

Like many others I remove

Like many others I remove "one use" software immediately after using it. No sense having a piece of software that stays resident, installs as a service and just plain takes up space.

Cleaning the registry is the painful part from many of these type of software, but well worth the effort.

Garmin Express

I TRIED to remove it after using it to update my maps on my NUVI 660 (which it did just fine), but it would not uninstall under Windows XP - I kept receiving a FAILED/TRY AGAIN? error message.

Instead, I used my Norton Internet Security program to disable the Garmin Express program from auto-starting with Windows.

Not the most ideal solution, but it worked...

Nuvi 2460LMT.

a little slow, but OK

I'm using a Win 7 PC, and I keep my system cleaned up with the freeware CCleaner. I also use the Win defrag when needed (rare with Win7). The wait time to see the updates with Garmin Express are a little slow, but no slower than most Garmin software that I have.

didn't work

Garmin Express simply did not work on my 2 Win 7 pcs (isn't that crazy using a pc today?), and 1 XP pc.

When I contacted Garmin with specific info on what happened, they simply said don't use it. imho that's terrible support, and most likely they have no clue.

I went back to web updater and it worked the first time, and I have since uninstalled Express.

In this day and age, how does one develop software, and not have any technical support? LOL

Ditto
