I have a Garmin nuvi 1490.

I have a Garmin nuvi 1490. I can't charge it in the car. It indicates battery low and it shuts off. Best Buy said it can't help. They said it could be the cord or the plug hole in the back.
It is still new, what do I do.

Try

Try plugging it in to another car. If it doesn't work there either, contact Garmin & tell them the problem. They may replace the auto line cord.

Fred

It could be the cord.

Will your 1490 connect to your computer ok? If not, then it is a bad USB port. Garmin swapped out my old 1490 for a refurb even though it was past the warranty period. Other posters say Garmin would not replace.

check the fuse

Your car charger cord has a fuse in the tip. You can carefully unscrew the tip (small parts with springs so be careful) and check to see if the fuse is good. If not, replace it with a 3AG 1A which you can get at almost any auto parts store.

If it IS recognized on the PC, then the fault lies with the power chord and not the USB port.

I believe the 1490T (no powered mount) comes with the GTM 25 traffic cable. To the best of my knowledge the GTM 25 does NOT have an accessible fuse,
It may have one internally but not as simple as unscrewing the tip.

Lastly, you should check out the unit in another car as FZbar suggested, it's possible your fuse is blown, or other electrical issues for the lighter socket in your vehicle.

Once you determine the fault, either USB port or Traffic cable, contact Garmin for a replacement under warranty. You will have to pay for shipping to Garmin so the chord will be cheaper than the Nuvi. Please back up your favorites if they send you a refurbed unit since you will lose them. All the posts I've read regarding Garmin's refurbed units are positive, they look like a brand new unit.

Refurb like new

I bought my son a refurb'd unit as a gift. Garmin does a great job...can't be told from new and works perfectly.

Take it back!!

Take it back!!

BoxCar is correct.

The GTM25 is a little different than other cords. Use a 1/4" wide flat screw driver to depress the plunger and engage the slot.

Thanks for that tip I didn't realize that. I think its time for an opthamologist visit to get stronger reading glasses.

I have a GTM35 with my 2460 and gave it a look.
It too has the slot you described once the plunger is depressed.

I also have a GTM20 with my old 660, that has a screw off tip and is on the flimsy side due to its long length, that one is more apt to break.
