Garmin Nuvi 350 Detour Function

I have had Garmin GPS units for several now. Just recently I started to wonder about the Detour function. I guess I have really never used it much. I tried doing a search here, but I really didn't find what I was looking for. Anyway, how does it work? How does it determine what part of your route to detour from?

Detour

I have used it a few times, but not often. It seems to detour at the first opportunity from your current position ... usually the next cross street that still has a route to your destination.
