Something happened in Indiana!

Traveling from Rochester, NY to Fort Wayne, IN using my nuvi 260w on a route that the device calculated. All went well through NY, PA and OH. Following Samantha's direction to Rt 24 S toward Fort Wayne when all of a sudden the device blinks and the vehicle icon is in the middle of a field (?). I can see 24 on the side of the screen, but Sam launches into recalculating mode. I shut off the device, drive for a bit, then turned it on when 24 and Rt 6 merged--all seemed to be working well at that point.

The whole scenario repeated itself after a few miles, so I used a paper map for the remainder of the trip. Later, I used the nuvi for some short intercity driving and all was well.

I have decided that in the future I'll always build the route on BaseCamp and transfer it to the nuvi when finished.

What happened, can I depend on the device in the future?

US-24 was upgraded to 4 lane between Toledo and Ft. Wayne. Because of right-of-way costs, a lot of the highway was relocated. This upgrade as been in progress for around 3 yrs now so I guess your maps are old.

US-24 has been 4 lane from US-6/US-24 merge to just west of Napoleon and again from just west of OH-224/US-24 to west of Defiance for over 30 yrs. So your maps will show that portion correctly.

I think you will have the same problem over that portion of your route regardless of how you generate the route.

Your NUVI is working correctly, all you need to do is update your map.

highway reworked?

Have they reworked the highway since your map in the GPS was made? It happens to me on Rt. 1 about Waycross , GA for a small stretch since the highway was being worked on when I got the map for my GPS. I end up essentially out in a field per the GPS, with the roadway showing a bit off to the side.

Been there, done that

Old Garmin map, driving back from California this past summer on Interstate 40. Somewhere in the middle of (I believe it was Indianapolis) Indiana, they relocated a section of I-40. The map showed my car driving along an open right of way on the Garmin, and the 'old' interstate was a couple of blocks north or south of my location. Common sense prevailed and I drove on. Soon the maps and the road converged once again and I was good.

My map is the latest

My map is the latest version--2013.4.

Thanks for the quick complete responses to my experiences. All that you wrote makes sense to me! I'll go NE on 24 on the way home until I hit the OH pike and I 90 east--no matter what Samantha says!

Suggestion

Since you have the latest maps, do a hard reset on your unit and see if that helps any.

It's a good idea to do a hard reset after every software & map upgrade. Good luck smile

I-40

Pardon my nitpicking, but I-40 doesn't go anywhere near Indianapolis. It goes thru Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee & North Carolina. I-70 goes thru Indiana.

Again

Again, not to nicpic but I-80/90 also go thru Indiana. wink

Hey it was from memory....

Perhaps I got the town/state wrong, but it was I 40 (and yes, it's nowhere near Indiana). I do remember the circumstance though and it was...interesting. Knowing what the issue is goes a long way to deciding whether to ignore the gadget (common sense), or exiting the thoroughfare and blowing through a maze of obstacles to simply (and blindly) follow a purple line.... confused

Wrap-up comments

On the return trip - Fort Wayne to Rochester--the same anomaly occurred along the same section of Rt 24 in IN, headed north/east this time. I stopped the route function, but followed the same road w/ only the plain map function engaged. The vehicle icon followed the map w/ no problem.

So, it appears that the map (2013.4) is correct since I followed Rt 24 from Ft. Wayne to Toledo outskirts. Once off 24, I re-engaged the route function and followed it all the way home w/ no problem.

I'm thinkin' psychic powers intervened....
