Do I Need to Start Shopping for a NEW GPS?

this morning when I headed out to the gym, my 755 never acquired any satellites. Did not think anything of it until, on the way home and while running a couple of errands it never did find any satellites.

I reset the unit hoping that would help, but to no avail!

Is, or has, my trusty 755 given up the ghost?? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.....

Oh oh

Was your reset a "hard reset?" If so, you may need to fire up the GPS in an fixed open sky area for up to a half hour or so for the GPS to regain the satellite almanac. I'd try that first.

Assuming the GPS has a good battery charge and that you don't have a new car with wires embedded in the windshield that blocks the radio signals from reaching the GPS, my next thought is to open up the case and see if the GPS antenna cable has become disconnected.

If none of these thoughts help, then your "start shopping" may be advised. (And if you really want a new nuvi now, ignore the attempts to recover the old one--just go and buy today. Buy a model with lifetime maps for sure.)

Signal strength screen

In addition you have to remember that if GPS is moving it takes it much longer to get fix. If you can try to put GPS on window sill for a longer time and then check if it works.

Did you check if it gets any signal or nothing at all? I don't know this model, but try to press for few seconds icon of satellite signal strength on main screen. It should open screen that is showing info about satellites in sight, signal strength and number of received signals. That can give you info if GPS see any satellites or if it got only weak signal reception.

My 3790 can take 10-15 minutes to get a satellite and traffic signal, depending on weather conditions. I got used to it. When I got my 3590 it was a whole different ball game. Its almost instant. I remember my 765T having reception issues also.

It had happened to my one time on my Nuvi 360

I did a hard reset and left it plug-in power and left it on and after about 10 minutes it connected ok.

Nothing Yet!!

Well I have tried all suggestions, except for taking the unit apart and still searching for satellites!!

Maybe West Texas is under some kind of invisible dome.....beautiful clear skies, so I don't get it.

Thanks for the responses....Not sure where I go from here.

It sounds like your unit has given up the ghost if you have tried everything suggested here, except for opening up the case. Just make sure your unit has a clear view of the sky for at least 30 minutes. Then open the satellite signal strength indicator (press and hold the satellite icon to open), if you see no satellites or very very weak satellite signal strength, then your GPS is probably toast.

Other than a hard reset,

Other than a hard reset, maybe buy an android phone with built in gps.

Bury it...

with honors...and go out and buy another one...I like getting new Garmins, that's fun!

Good luck, and as you, I hate giving up on an old friend!

Galaxy S111

I have a Samsung Galaxy S111 smart-phone and use it more and more rather than the Garmin. It has a 4.8 inch screen and works great... picks up satellites very quickly and never has a problem with destinations. I think GPS'S as we know them will soon be obsolete... My opinion of course...

Try this

As a last resort,, call garmin and talk to them or send them a message from their website. It may be salvageable for a while yet. Good luck

I've evolved. I've had no issues using my iPhone to navigate with Navigon, and Apple's Map app... and made calls while doing so.

acquiring satellites in NYC

I find it takes an awful long time to acquire satellites in New York City. It becomes an issue when I don't know where I am going.

Seems All I Needed

Was to go to Mass! Coming home from Church this evening, started the truck and low and behold the GPS finds the satellites in just a few seconds like it always has! Went to dinner came out and everything was still fine.

I am anxious to see what happens in the morning!

Me too

Flawlessly, Only after the new Garmin unit is debugged by you and others. Do yourself a favor keep what you have, and let others work the bugs out. You have been around long enough not to think a Garmin will release a new unit bug free.

Magellan

Sounds like my old magellan. I tried rebooting, updating firmware, etc. but it never got better. I finally broke down and just bought a new one. Glad I did.

So is a dedicated GPS not needed for auto navigation anymore?

My Garmin is way long in the tooth. Work's about to provide me an iPhone to replace my Blackberry. Is the iPhone a realistic substitute for a Nuvi for relatively simple automobile use? (ie A to B route, find a gas station?) Can you load POI's on an iPhone?
