Bill introduced in Arizona to ban all RLCs Statewide

I'll keep my fingers crossed!

AZ's speed cameras make driving there painful. I make it a point to spend as little time driving in AZ as possible, even if it adds time to my trip.

I know that AZ eliminated state speed cameras a couple years back, but it seems a number of municipalities installed their own. The way I read the new bill, though, it appears that all cameras, both speed and RLC, would be banned regardless of who operates them.

It is somewhat misleading.

The headline states the ban of all RLC's, while the body of the article states to ban all cameras. I guess AZ also has speed cameras.

"On Tuesday a bill will be filed at the state legislature to ban every camera that issues tickets in Arizona,"

Think AZ is painful? Try the DC area

Here in Montgomery County, MD, part of the Washington DC Metro area, we are second only to the NYC Metro area in the number of "safety cameras" in use. They say the cams reduce the number of accidents and save lives, yet the government officials lament over the fact that drivers learn where the cams are located, and the number of tickets being issued has dropped significantly. They are undoubtedly money generators. DC has made plans to install cameras at Stop Signs, to make sure motorists come to a full stop, and cameras to ticket motorist stuck in the middle of an intersection, blocking traffic.
An unforeseen side effect of all these cams is how it affects driving habits. It has become exasperating to drive down a 40 mph road with a speed camera and everyone passes it at 30 mph, because most cams are set up in a 30 mph zone. They could drive past that speed cam at 50 mph and not get a ticket, because the law requires that the motorist exceed the posted speed by 12 mph before a ticket is issued. Speed cams in Montgomery County can only be put in certain areas, mainly school zones, and there must be a sign posted well before the cam that the speed limit is photo enforced. But the effect on traffic all over the area is a nightmare.
And those red light cameras! One never knows if the guy in front will roll through the yellow or jam on the brakes for fear that there is a cam installed. No warning is required for the RLCs.

Iowa

Certain lawmakers in Iowa have been trying to outlaw cameras for awhile now, but it never passes.

Bill introduced in Arizona to ban all RLCs Statewide

I live in Tucson and we have a bunch of speed photo cameras that I hope are gone also.

Not really misleading,

All RLCs will be banned as well as the speed cameras, if this passes.

All of the RLCs here in Tucson are ALSO speed cameras, so I think of them as the same.

I thought the speed cameras were already gone

I thought the speed cameras in Arizona were already discontinued. I used to see them in marked police vehicles along Interstate 10, but those seem to be gone, and for quite some time now.

The cities still have them

At the state level they're gone. All the speed camera on the freeways (they were a bunch on the 101) have been gone for some times. But the cities can still and do have speed cameras. I don't know if this new bill will remove the right from the cities but if it does, I can see that going to the State Supreme court.

camera Defective

I was reading a few day ago,an add about those cameras they are famous to be defective and reading also the wrong speed, yea some State are going to replace them to replace them it will cost the state a lot of money,in the mid time what about all those people that they did not feel fighting the ticket and they pay those fine?

The Goverment they try to abolish some assault weapons,I wish they will do the same with those dam camera..

I'll modify my statement that "all of the RLCs here in Tucson are ALSO speed cameras..."

While they are, I just remembered there is at least one speed camera that is not a RLC, so we have both in Tucson.

Crossed fingers but small chance for it to ban...

Cash cow for the state and local government.

Bill to Ban Cameras Rejected

It looks like the House Transportation Committee for the State was "consideriong" a bill to ban the use of unmanned cameras (speed and red light) in municipalities. The proposal did not come to a vote in the legislature because members of the committee were concerned about "forcing" the decision on cities and towns. The state legislature did previously pass a bill removing speed cameras from state highways.

Saw a news blurb yesterday that a NJ town may be getting rid of them. This particular one is causing accidents, rear enders, they having a tough time though as it has generated a ton of money for the town.

2 light tickets

My friend and I was in Raleigh, NC a few years ago trying to find a charity bicycle ride. It was a Saturday, didnt know the area, was in a hurry, not much traffic, so he turned on a red light, turned around, and ran the same light (right turn?) again going in another direction. A few days later he emailed me that he got 2 tickets. I forgot the amount, but I thought they were a bit high. He called them, but they would not listen to any excuses even tho there was almost no traffic at the time. He had to pay them. He sent the check. End of story.

I'm sure it was just wishful thinking which many of us share, that we could all somehow vote for a bill to put a sure end to the plaque otherwise known as these despotic cams, everywhere!

AZ Speed Camera

It really isn't quite so painful to Drive in the Best State in the Nation, IF you Obey the Speed Laws. The Red Light Cameras catch people that are too slow to make it thru a Traffic Light after it has changed from Green. The Problem is, If you pull out into an Intersection, behind a Slow Moving Car and the Green Lite suddenly turns Red, you only have two (2) Seconds to Clear the Intersection which is virtually Impossible, so you will get a Hefty Fine (about $400) in the mail. If I was not 1st in a Left Turn Camera Traffic Light, I would hold back and wait to the light turned again.

2 Light Tickets

Most Red Light Cameras are Politically Installed and the Courts will not Flinch when it comes to making Money for the State. Regardless of the Reason, the Judge WILL ALWAYS make you Pay.

And Remember

Read below what I said about Red Light Cameras being Politically Installed (and managed). You are Right, we have control over our Law Makers. We can do lots of things besides just Complain. Recall comes to mind, in case one of them slips thru the Cracks.
