The nuvi 6x0 series (like my nuvi 855 as well) will not be offered the direct SD map installation that many other series receive, so to install the large City Navigator map update to SD card, you must make sure that you select the option to install the map update to your computer, then use MapInstall to transfer the map to SD card.

This procedure should work well for older nuvis that don't offer Junction View, etc. For models with Junction View, remember that MapInstall will only create a map file and all other features will be lost.

3490 LMT Filling Up

My 3490 LMT internal memory is filling up since I've added a bunch of custom POI files. I'll need to take a look at moving them to the SD card.

JCV and other things

Besides JCV, what are the other features that will be lost? I have looked but can't find Garmin's reference.

There are some nuvis that show buildings in cities, aren't there? I'm just guessing here since my nuvis are older or lower end models that don't offer such things. My guess is that the city buildings would be lost. I expect that Birds Eye stuff would be lost as well although I admit that falls into my previous Junction View statement.

All in all, the most common loss will be Junction View. The newer nuvis with Building View, Birds Eye stuff, etc. most likely are the large storage models that will not need to move maps to SD cards for a long time.

7GB

The 34xx series comes with 7GB of internal storage so I'd be surprised if many 34xx owners would be running short of memory for POI storage, map updates, etc. How much free space do you have in your 3490 now? How big is/are your POI file(s)?

.

I think Mid February would be about right for an update

I hope they fixed the MapSource problem

2013.30 data causes occasional crashes in MapSource. I hope Garmin fixed that data problem for the next map update.

I doubt that Garmin will make any changes that would fix anything that is related to Mapsource as they no longer support it. They have moved on to BaseCamp.

The next map update will

The next map update will come when it comes. You know that Garmin doesn't follow a calendar.

And yes the map files are getting bigger and bigger. Some engineer at Garmin didn't plan for the future and should of gave all the NUVI's tons of hard drive space.

ASR files.

On the 8xx nuvi series, you get updated speech recognition files with the map update. I would guess that MapInstall will not install the new ASR files. I am not sure what impact it will have to use ASR files that are not matched to the map version. I use the "cloning" method on my 855 to install maps to the SD card. That method requres several steps, but it does insure you get all the files.

I have this site bookmarked when I want to know exactly when old maps were released and estimated time for new release.

It's nice to have since you see the history, yet we know estimated means just that.

Looking forward to a new map

Looking forward to a new map update, not that I've found anything wrong with the current one.

Map Update

On my 765T I've removed voice, jpg, language, etc files to free up internal memory, I'm sure I'll be using an SD card myself.

.

We have it too good nowadays...I remember having to download very small regions of the city/state (in my case, SoCal) into my GPS V using a serial connection. The GPS V had a "whopping" 19MB of free memory for maps with no external storage possible. I'd have to fit sections of SoCal into the device for local travel (I believe it took over 30 minutes to transfer 19MB). When traveling to say, San Diego, I'd again have to load that new region but then would not have my home region available to me. In addition, you could strip out the autorouting data when doing the map transfer but then you'd have just maps with no routing guidance. We've come a long way...

When I got a new PC I went to get Mapsource and found this out. Downloaded BaseCamp but it seems that I can't make custom maps for the SD card with it. I'm I missing something? Went with the last Mapsource and back in business.

Use MapInstall

Use MapInstall to update maps on an SD card.

Either Garmin added new map data type or overflowed some data field that occasionally causes MS to crash. Usually happens when scrolling/refreshing map display. I've noticed that the Garmin GPS refreshes the screen much slower with 2013.30 when I tough the screen and try to Zoom in/out.

I'm quite aware and PO'd that Garmin scrapped MS for a poor port of a Mac program, BC.

I have 1.2GB of space on

I have 1.2GB of space on zumo, and am still using 2012.4 and running Basecamp exclusively. I need to update my maps because things have changed since 2012.4 that are beginning to impact travel. Quick questions....1. If I update to 2013.4 (when it comes out)will all my routes have issues like they did when using MS, like the via points all needing to be moved and moved back again? 2. Can I delete 2012.4 to create space for the new mapset, and if so, what files should I delete from zumo.

As always, thanks for all the help this board provides.

No Canada nor Mexico

I bet that if Garmin offered the option of the Maps without Canada and Mexico, then it would fit.

1. Map update doesn't effect user data. So after update is done you just turn on device and everything should be ready to go. No need to move or reinstall anything.

2. Is this 1.2GB all space on your Zumo or free space with 2012.4 installed? I'm asking because NA 2013.30 has 1.8GB and next version will be bigger. How much bigger I don't know, but every new version is bigger. So if total space you have is 1.2GB you will have not enough space for whole map. You may eventually try to delete voice files if you have worldwide set. It usually gives few hundred megabytes. Instruction what files should be removed and how to find them you can find on this forum.

As for update, there is no need to delete any files. During update old map will be replaced by new one. And if you don't know anything about files on device than I strongly advice you not to delete anything. If you delete wrong file you can brick GPS.

.

Most of the updates are 200-300 megs IIRC, so the OP should be ok for a while yet.

A lot of computers now have slots for adding cards. If your computer has the needed slot, have you tried putting the card into the computer? It may be a problem with the computer going into sleep mode with the transfer in process as the USB port speed is too slow.

Illiterate? Write for free help.

The

The other thing you'll want to be sure of is that your attaching the USB cable to a USB port ON THE COMPUTER and not through a USB hub. Even if the hub has it's own power supply, it is always better to attach the GPS directly to the computer without other hardware in between.

I know a lot of times using a different cable will make it work better too. I also always use a USB port on the back of the computer that is mounted directly to the motherboard. It just seems to work better that way.

It's 2013.30 right now.

You can check your nuvi by probably tapping:

Tools/MyMaps

or possibly Tools/Settings/Map/MapInfo

(I'm not sure where the 3790 offers the map info.)

For 37xx Series

triliby wrote:

For the 37xx series, tap Tools/Settings/myMaps to get the current version installed on your unit.

Like CraigW said, the latest version is 2013.30.

A closed frontage road still shows as open on Mapquest. Garmin routes me this way for some POIs.

Correct - if it gets fixed in MQ then there is a good chance in will be in a Garmin map update and you will no longer be routed through it.
