Getting Proximity Alerts to Alert

I have a Garmin Nuvi 1695 which I have successfully loaded POIs for speed alerts/ red light cameras, Roadside Oddities, and Rest Areas. I manually set distances to my preferences and all work well. I then tried adding Truck/RV fuel Stations (http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26860). Again, I manually set distance for 7000 feet. I still get notifications for traffic alerts, Roadside Oddities, and Rest Areas, but I never get notifications for the Truck Stops. I've looked at the file and know that it contains and should have alerted me to a few I passed by. The only difference I see is that the Truck Stop file is a GPX. All the others are CSVs. Any ideas as to how to get notification of an upcoming truck stop working?

Double check that the names

Double check that the names of the sound file and poi file match excatly.

When you added the Truck/RV files did you reload all your previous poi's via the Loader program?

alerts

Many of the truck stops in this file won't alert as you drive by because the location is more than 75 feet from your route of travel. Because the stops are along connector roads they won't alert unless you are traveling on the same street or pointed directly at the locations within the alert distance. There probably isn't anything wrong with how you set up the alert, it's just where the station is located in relation to the highway.

Correct

Correct most likely, but there is a solution. Make the Truck Stop a TourGuide file and it'll give a radius alert that should work with set-back POI locations off the route being traveled.

The Garmin faqs offer several faqs on TourGuides:

Remember that your nuvi 1695 can not use mp3 audio and requires wav audio files--and that TourGuides only work when there's an associated audio file.

but tourguide

Turning the file into a TourGuide opens other issues the OP may nor want to deal with so it isn't always the panacea you make it out to be. That's one reason I didn't suggest that course of action.

I use TourGuides

I use TourGuide for McDonalds. I have reported many new and incorrect locations to Mahoney. When I see a Mcdonalds, I expect an alert, which I have set at 700 feet. And when I hear an alert and don't see the arches, I mark the spot and check it out when we get home from vacation.
It might be worth a try for the OP.
BTW, I use EPE and set the radius for just a few feet on my local locations so as to not get annoying alerts from familiar locations. And use the express mode with POI Loader.

Jollywally has been a member for just over a week. You've been here over 3 years. How long was it after you joined you did your first TourGuide?

I'll agree that TourGuides are not the way new Garmin GPS owners should start with customizations.

But reading through the OP, Jollywally has already successfully loaded POI files, used POI Loader's manual mode for alerts, is aware of csv vs. gpx files, etc., but now would also like alerts for truck stops (at spokey does for McD's and I use for School Zones).

If Jollywally wants alerts for Truck stops, my guess is that we've found a new POI Factory member capable of succeeding in creating a TourGuide.

When I was on vacation

One time, I had an alert for McDonald. But I could not locate the Golden Arch. Found out later after driving around that McDonald was located inside a Walmart. They had the little tiny arch.

Rest areas are not like truck stops

Box Car is right. The problem with truck stops does not apply to the POI file "Rest Areas Combined" because MrKenFL has placed the POI location at the exit ramp to the rest area rather than the parking lot or the building itself. That way a proximity alert will work even if the rest area is hundreds of feet off the road.

Thanks for the Info and Comments

Great info folks. I wasn't expecting such a response. From reading your comments, I think I've caught a few interesting tidbits to explain some of my observations and to set the stage for some experimentation to tweak things to the way I envision I want to go. I'm sure I'll hit a few more snags, but I'm glad to be part of a community that obviously has lots of experience and expertise AND is so willing to share. Thanks.

ok,, i will have to try one
