Garmin POI Loader for Windows 2.7.2 Installer failure

I am running Windows XP SP3. I have several times downloaded the installer. When I run the installer, I get the following error:
This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem.
I have replaced C++ 2008 with the C++ 2010. I have dumped AVG 2012 for 2013. Does anyone have any ideas?

Garmin Poi Loader for Windows 2.7.2-Suggestion

HI... my simple mind says try executing a prev version of POILOADER..
POILoaderforWindows_254.. See if that works.. question question

It may help to put you on the right track to do further analysis and problem solving?

You said you have no virus S/w executing in the background.. Check Task Manager to be sure.

FYI... I had downloaded your version 2.7.2 about 45 mins ago...no issues for me. I'm running Vista SP2

Good Luck

Net Framework?

Welcome to the forum.

I believe your problem may be you don't have Net Framework installed on your PC.

POI Loader 2.7.2 requires this for installation.
You can avoid installing Net Framework (huge) by using POI Loader V 2.7.1, that does not require Net Framework.

You can download it here:

Thanks, that's great to know.

On the other hand, .NET Framework seems to be used by more and more software, so it may be useful to get .NET working and be able to install the latest POI Loader and prevent future computer and software problems at the same time.

I'm not sure about recent updates, but in the past, a missing or corrupt .NET Framework may result in failures with several programs, and the real issue for me is that these failures rarely indicated an error message that could help identify the problem.

For Windows folks, go to Windows Updates, then:

-check your Windows Update history and look for failed updates.

-check for new updates, not just Critical Updates, and see if there's a new .NET or an update or a Service Pack to a current .NET and see if performing this update cures the problems you're having.

Problems seen often with .NET Framework that really bother me are:

-Garmin programs and other software that requires .NET Framework (of any of many versions) should auto-update .NET Framework as part of their installation, yet it often does not occur;

-as I said before, a failed .NET Framework may cause multiple issues with many programs resulting in error messages that rarely identify the real issue.

I still have decided if I should be blaming Microsoft for this or the individual software folks who use .NET with their software.

Net Framework Update Issues

I am a stickler for clutter on my operating system.
I use XP SP3,I have tried Window 7 and immensely dislike it. Microsoft will stop support for XP on April 8, 2014. I'll deal with that when the time comes.

I personally don't have Net Framework installed since I try to minimize the size of my C: Drive. I have gutted XP to the bare minimum and the size is only 2.5 MB with everything I need.
Why I did this is I use an imaging program to back up my hard drive frequently, the smaller the size, the faster the backup and restore. Whenever I install new software I ALWAYS take an image since if I'm not pleased with the software I restore my backup image. Almost all programs uninstalled will always leave remnants of their footprint.
I have a backup exclusively for Garmin that I use, it and only takes less than two minutes to load, that image has Net Framework loaded.

Recently I had to build a new computer for my nephew who is mentally challenged with XP SP3. I installed all the Windows updates, including Net Framework 4.0. After all the constant updates, Windows indicates I need a patch for 3.5 and must be downloaded separately. I have tried numerous times and each time it failed. I believe it's because 4.0 is installed and it's newer but I'm not sure.
One would think 4.0 would include any patches for 3.5.
I cannot remove or hide that update and it appears every time I go to the update site.

It's frustrating to think on a new install this could happen. This is one of the reasons I like to keep my system as simple as possible. I don't need all those bells and whistles I'll never use.

I wonder

what would happen if you installed .NET 3.5, applied the patch, then removed .NET 3.5. Shouldn't have to go thru that kind of baloney, but it might work.

Many thanks for the suggestion but I'm just going to ignore the message since I'm still able to download both critical and regular downloads.
I never use Automatic Updates(disabled), always use custom and review each update. I want to control what is being downloaded and not have Microsoft make that choice for me by using Automatic Updates.

My nephew lives in a different state and I maintain his computer remotely since he is not capable due to his learning disability.

Sometimes it becomes a nuisance since on most updates a reboot is required and I lose my connection with him and have to reconnect.

Will it work?

It wouldn't. Attempting to uninstall NET Framework 3.5 before uninstalling the patch uninstalls the patch as well.
