Project open for volunteers

I have started this metro area now and big thanks go out to mashryock for volunteering to help. I have the top attractions file up and would like suggestions on what other types of files you would like me to make for this metro area.

Miss Poi

Kch50428...

Thanks for volunteering, I have added you as a maintainer and contributor.

Miss Poi

Jmarqua

Thanks for volunteering to help out, you have been added to the project.

Miss Poi

Does that mean I'm the lead on this?

I'm happy to chip in, but I think the lead should be in the hands of someone who actually lives in Minnesota. smile (I'm in Iowa)

Update for Twin Cities.

I added Yahoo's list of things to do in Minneapolis yesterday.

Thought maybe we should set some guidelines on our development so we do not duplicate efforts.

I would like to suggest that we limit our locations for the twin cities metro area to 7 counties.... Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington. These are the seven listed in their phone book. I do have other files I have created for Minnesota we could either scale down, or link as is. What categories do we want to add? Below are my thoughts for categories.
1. Night Life
2. Popular Restaurants
3 .Popular Shopping
4 .Top Attractions
5. Airports
6. Bridges
7. Popular buildings
8. Cemeteries
9. Churches
10. Hospitals
11. Parks
12. Schools
13. Radio or TV towers
14. geographical locations like... (Basins, bays, canals, capes, channels, cliffs, dams, waterfalls, forests, islands, lakes, streams, reservoirs, summits, swamps and trails).

Email me or post YOUR thoughts here.

John

I would add movie theaters,

I would add movie theaters, and possibly museums.

Restaurants

GREAT idea on the theater and museum listing!

I have list of 2007 restaurant favorites from mspmag.com that totals in the hundreds. What is the groups thoughts of separating these out like Garmin does by categories. Example would be:

Barbecue, Breakfast, Brunch, Chinese, Deli, Dessert
French, German, Greek, Indian, Italian, Japanese etc.

Anyone want to help organize/sort and then find addresses?

Been away for a bit

Sorry gang, I am taking my CPA exam tomorrow and have been very busy the last several weeks. After I get that behind me, I can dedicate more time to this project.

Door Cnty

Yes, me and the wife go there every year in October for 10 days. It is our favorite place in the world!

Jmarqua, Thank you so much

Jmarqua,

Thank you so much for all your hard work on this metro area. I am totally blown away by all the time you spent on this project, I see a trophy in your future my friend wink

Miss Poi

Thank you

Thank you for the kind words. The project actually has been a lot of fun. There are restaurants and other POI's I would like to visit on my next trip to the Twin Cities. What I do ask of anyone who downloads and uses any of these files, if they want to add, delete or update anything to PLEASE let us know. Are there other custom POI's that might interest you for the Twin Cities. Thanks to all for your support and feedback.

Free Wi-Fi? Libraries?

I would suggest adding Free Wi-Fi locations. When I travel these are the places I look for. All of the Panera Breads, and Dunn Bros. have free Wi-Fi, but there are a lot more. Reminds me.... another category could be libraries.

I would help but I'm brand new to this GPS thing. I'm spending most of my net time just reading through the immense amount of information on the subject.

Welcome Hydeho,

Welcome Hydeho,

Check out this Wifi file here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/1153

it looks like we have a few library files, one trick that I use to find things in the alphabetical list is to use the find on this page feature and type in the item you are searching for and if someone has added the state name to the front of it you can find it this way.

I hope that makes sense.

Welcome to the site, soon you will be a pro.

Dunn Bros POIs

Hello, eveyone!

I just joined, just found this site. I like the idea of the regional forums, MsPOI!

I live just NW of the Twin Cities, but I work in the Stillwater, MN area, so I'll help out when I can.

I'm in the midst of creating a POI file for all of the Dunn Bros coffee shops in MN, WI, ND, and SD. As soon as I get it done, shall I submit it for posting here?

Cheers.

gonzomup

Yup that will work;) Welcome to the group.

Miss Poi

Caribou Coffee

Does someone have a poi for Caribou Coffee locations in the Twin Cities?

Here is a web site listing all MN locations

Sorry, life kept me busy...

Okay, so life conspired to keep me too busy to post up my POI file. I'm slowly getting back to my GPS'ing, so hopefully I'll have the file to upload soon!

edit: I see now that someone has already created a POI file for DunnBro's. I'll check mine against it and update the file/add a new one with newly opened ones.

Me too

I finally passed all of my CPA exams so I can get back at it also.

Complete Newbie Willing to help...

...if you tell me what to do. smile

I just got my first GPS a couple weeks ago and am still figuring it out. I don't even have an SD card yet to play with these .csv files but they seem awesome.

My idea is a file of liquor stores. Partly because I am a lush, but also because it seems like people are always looking for one to buy a bottle of wine or a 12-pack on the way somewhere.

If you all think this is worthwhile, I am willing to give it a shot if you just tell me how the heck to do it! Surely you don't drive to each one and check the GPS for the coordinates.....

I'll help

Thanks, I have added you to the project for the following files.
Attractions (which is still empty) just put in items that you feel are great attractions in your local area.
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/3854 and it looks like the restaurant file has been covered.

Thanks.

No access

I tried to update the attractions and have no access. Am I having a brain fart on missing a step? smile

Golf Courses

Since Minnesota has one of the top per capita golfer ratios it would be nice to see Golf Courses added to this list. Whatdaya think?

I like it

Very good idea. I can't tell you the amount of times I meet someone in an unfamiliar part of town for a round of golf.

is Gangster Tours included...

This tour was awesome. It was actually on the History Channel and it talked about the infamous John Dillinger. Would go on the tour again.

Minnesota Golf Course project

Hi Bru

Have you begun any work on a Minnesota golf course POI? If not, I'd be glad to pick up on this get the ball rolling, so to speak. smile

Closed Restaurants

Hi there. I just got my first GPS unit & found this site. While here, I saw the listing of TC restaurants and, since this is my hometown, took a look. There are a few on the list that no longer exist. They are:
A Rebours
Fhima's
Gallery 8
Rossi's Blue Star Room

And Hell's Kitchen moved into the spot here Rossi's used to be, at 80 S Ninth St Minneapolis, MN 55402.

Just thought I'd contribute a bit of local info.

Kate

Thanks Kate

Kate,
I have sent a note to the Manager of that file, it should be updates in the next few days.

Thanks for posting that update, we really appreciate it.

Welcome to the site. And thank you for the updates on the changing restaurant scene in Minneapolis. The maintainer of the file will be along to make the updates.

I'm certain you will be informed, educated, and amused following the discussions. Welcome aboard!

Thank you

Thanks Kate for the new information. I will make update soon. If you know of other new locations you would like added please let me know. The original list was created 18 months ago and much has changed including our taste buds. smile

Minneapolis Restaurants

I am going there for my vacation this summer and downloaded the POI file - (great work)
I was wondering if there would be a possibility for someone that lives near or right in town to rate them. Like stars or by number along side the name? This would be great for new people going to the city. IE service, quality, price (S5,Q5,P3)? I had interesting experience in Orlando last year and found you can't go by name and adds alone. We could all contribute also by sending in our rating if we visit any of the ones listed!
The ratings can be averaged if there are more opinions.

Just a thought!

Farmington, MN

Hello... I am kind of new to this and started on my own version of a Farmington directory and then I thought I would try to find what was out there already. It seems since the current lists are topical, I would have to load and search all the lists to find the local items?

Do you guys use Extra POI Editor? It was what I found first and have been using...

Is there a way for me to "pull" the Farmington files from your files and in turn, give you the entries I found? I am clueless on this stuff which must be apparent.

Thanks!

Like to help

I just got my Nuvi 255W and would like to contribute to the POI cause. I live in the Minneapolis area and can either assist someone or take on a new category. How about public boat ramps? Not sure how easy it is to get the info but can look into it.

Rick

MDOT Camera Locations

Hi ya'll

I was hoping maybe the extensive MDOT Camera locations could become a project. I do not see any traffic cameras or speed cameras in the poi section. This would be the next best thing.

Minneapolis, MN - Project Discussion

That sounds good to me since I drive to work in Minneapolis most work days each week. Benparlament, do you already have all of the POI coordinates that you will need for your project?

Adding to and updating the list

I just downloaded the restaurants and nightlife file and started looking at it. One of my favorite places is not on the list and I am sure I can add many more great places that are missing.

Here is the info on one:

-93.053154 45.049979 Jimmy's Food and Drink (Restaurant and Sports Bar) 1132 County Road E East, Vadnais Heights, MN 55110 (651) 482-1100

Is anyone updating it ?
