Announcing - Metro area projects

We are launching a new area on the site today. It is called metro areas. So far we have just one area, Boise, Id, there are no locations to download yet it is still under construction.
We will be adding more as you request the areas that you live in and would like to contribute to.
Eventually we will have a metro page for most metro areas in the US and Canada. If you would like to volunteer for your area let me know and I will get you hooked up.
We are really excited about this new project. This is all put together in the POI Factory database and each location is added individually. This makes it easy for several people to work together on the same file. Ideally we would like to have 2 to 6 people maintaining each metro area.
This is a pilot project, so we expect to make improvements as we gain experience working together.
You will be able to add personal snap shots of your area to the metro area pages.

Wikipedia
It would be a good idea to include a link from the metro page to the associated page in Wikipedia. Wikipedia is also a good place to look for places that should be included in the top attractions file.
JM
also...
We also have hundreds of POI Files here on the site that can be used for reference material too. This post was up for only a few minutes and Bobkz sent me a message reminding me that he had lots of tourists files that could be used on these metro areas.
This is going to be fun everyone.
Miss Poi

New York, NY
I've setup a metro area page for New York along with a Top Attractions file. We can add other files as people express interest in sharing locations.
The additional categories for the Boise example are Night Life, Popular Shopping, and Popular Restaurants. These are probably a little too broad for a very large city like New York. Suggestions for additional categories should be made on New York's Project Discussion page.
Bobkz -- miss poi will get in touch with you via email to help you get started with using the POI Database.

Washington DC and Puerto Rico
I live in the DC area, so I can assist here. Also, I have already started building some POIs for Puerto Rico since I will be going there for 2 weeks in October. Unfortunately, there are not many POIs for PR anywhere. So this is a project I will be working hard on during the summer. I'll be glad to share whatever I come up with.

DC & PR
Thanks cash70 --
I'll start setting up the metro project page for DC. GC0110 has already built a pretty nice attractions file for the area, but I think there's room to add a few more categories along side it.
Do you (or anyone) have suggestions for some new DC area categories?
Puerto Rico sounds like it would make a good project. Is there a major urban area that we can use as the starting point?
JM
DC & PR
Wow! There is already a nice list for DC. With assistance from others we could come up with list of best (Italian, French, etc.) restaurants in the area. Also one category could be the Smithsonian or War Memorials. I'll keep coming up with ideas and adding them to the list.
By the way, I have a few photos of the DC area at http://cassiuscallender.com. We can use some of them on the page.
As far as PR, we can start with San Juan. I can send you some snapshots I took during my last trip.

that would be great:)
Phoenix
There's already an attractions for Phoenix by jmarqua, I just posted free Wifi (Phoenix and some Tucson), and I hope to make a few more POI's for Phoenix in the future.

I setup a metro area page for Phoenix and linked the two files you mentioned. For future files, I'd like to suggest using the POI Database so others can assist with maintenance.
If you post category ideas on the Phoenix project page, and I'll setup new files for you in the database.

Puerto Rico
As far as PR, we can start with San Juan. I can send you some snapshots I took during my last trip.
I need to add a validation rule to allow PR entries in the POI Database. Does anyone have the max/min longitude and latitude values that cover the area?
PR LAT/LONG

-67.33521 -65.57739

Thanks. POI Database now allows entry of locations in Puerto Rico.
Light Rail and more...
I have already published all of the stops of the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. I know it is in NJ, but it is a vital part of the commute to NYC as well. Can you guys add it to the NYC-Metro. I am working on 2 new projects -- PATH (Port Authority Trans Hudson) and NY Waterway peers. I'll let you know when I'm done.
Basically I'll try to help in any project for NYC Metro.
The only things you regret in life are the chances you never take.
Great point
I could have used the NY Waterway piers during my recent trip. It's a long walk from Pier 6 (Battery Park) to catch the water taxi back to Liberty Park in NJ

Minneapolis
I can help with Minneapolis. Also, although not a metro area, but Door County WI, is a huge tourist area. I could help with that also.
Magellan Maestro 4250, T-Mobile G1 with Google Maps, iPaq with TomTom, and a Tapwave Zodiac with TomTom and Mapopolis
I could contribute to Minneapolis
I've a few spots from there in my favorites...

Guidelines
JM I posted this at the New York, NY Project Forum earlier - please excuse the duplication.
With regard to the ‘Metro Area Project’, I think guidelines are needed to establish just how wide of an area a 'Metro Area' will encompass.
While going through the New York, NY - Top Attractions file I came across the Baseball Hall of Fame which is located in Cooperstown, NY. This location is over 200 miles and 4 hours away from NYC. While this would make a perfect entry for a 'State of NY - Top Attractions' POI I think it's too far away from the city to be considered a 'New York Metro Area' attraction!

Charlotte
Hi, I'm new here, what a great site! I would like to volunteer my time to help in creating a Charlotte, NC Metro Area POI.
contributor badges to people helping you
I want to bring something to everyones attention.
If you are a moderator of a file and you have someone making contributions to you and you see that they do not have a poi contributor badge yet, please let me know so that I can get that fixed.
It will be more difficult for me to track this as we get more contributors working behind the scenes through emails and such.
If you put up a post in the forum area about what you want added to the files you will get credit for your weekly activity, however if I don't hear about your contribution I won't know to make a note of it in my log book which automatically counts your activity on the site.
Thanks for getting so excited about this new part of the site everyone....

St. Louis Metro Area
I can begin on St. Louis Metro Attractions. I have already built, STL ATM's, MO Shell stations, Advance Auto stores in MO, and St. Charles County Churches.

I was just wondering what I would do next, I will get it stated and link the older files to the metro page.
Miss Poi
I got the St. Louis metro
I got the St. Louis metro page up however I was unable to find the st. charles county churches and the advance auto stores file has all locations in it so I don't want to link something that is not just for the metro area.

We are doing Charlotte, NC right now for you and will add you as a maintainer. Thanks for volunteering for your area.

Wikipedia
Use TV markets.
See the list on Wikipedia.
That's a good idea Keith.
Couple that with Wikipedia's listings of specific Metro areas and we'll have a winner. I checked the Chicago, New York City and St. Louis Metro Area listings on the Wikipedia site and they included sizable areas surrounding those specific cities.
If we use a common reference point, i.e. Wikipedia, and the KISS principle then we shouldn't have a problem with over-saturation.

We like that idea too and have printed out the list to use as a reference point

Portland, OR
I would be willing to help with one for my area. Would be daunting to tackle on my own, but would love to team up on it.
St. Louis Metro Area
I forgot, I did not put the St. Charles churches out there. My Bad. Will get it out there Pronto. I can break out the St. Louis area from Advanced Auto.

The Island of Staten
Miss POI perhaps you can cajole alanrobin1 into helping with the NYC Metro file?
As residents of Staten Island I can't think of a better team then they to point out the sights that lie hidden on the island called Staten!

Puerto Rico POI
I am so glad to see this, I live in PR and ahve look all over the net for POI's in the area with no luck. I just purchased TOMTOM Navigator 6 for my Treo 750 because it said to have more poi's than any other including PR just to find that it has less than 20 and those are only some hospitals and some airports. I also have Mapopolis, that is now discontinue but has many POI's for PR but their list appears to be a few years old.
Anyway, I just stumbled into this site today, how can I help...
Jose
Metro Area Project link
I had Jon make an area on the poi files page for the Metro Area Project stuff. So if you go to the http://www.poi-factory.com/poifiles page and scroll down you will see it at the bottom of the categories list.

I am sorry that I have not made Orlando Fl yet. I will try to get that up soon.
We are visiting with family over the next 7 to 8 days so things may not get done as fast as usually.

From Plano, Texas
Metro Area Project for the Dallas area would be nice including all the suburbs. Dallas and Ft.Worth has always bundle together in the past, (DFW/FTW) but the area has grown too large. A separate Project for Dallas and Ft.Worth would be a great project. Just joined... Great web site.
Boston
I live in the Metro Boston area and would give it a try adding area attractions.
Just let me know what I need to do.
DDos
todays plan
I will be working on adding the following metro areas today and putting the volunteers on that have spoken up in this thread.
Dallas/Ft. Worth TX
Boston MA
Anyone else out there ready to start their cities?
Miss Poi
In response to the Dallas and Ft. Worth areas being divided we are going to stick with the census borough's way of defining metro areas so that the metro areas are defined by radius of an metro area not by how large or busy it is.
Atlanta, Gawja if you please.
I already have a number of Atlanta-only POIs, some I generated myself, otheres are parsings from larger POIs that are already posted.
Zumo 450, C530, Quest, Quest, GPS III+
More AZ POIs
There's already an attractions for Phoenix by jmarqua, I just posted free Wifi (Phoenix and some Tucson), and I hope to make a few more POI's for Phoenix in the future.
Kyle,
I've posted Cold Stone Creamery, Baskin Robbins and Borders Books for AZ and 90% are in Phoenix area.
Also, there's a POI for Pei Wei West Region. Feel free to extract the Phoenix-area.
