U turn right into a military base in Hawaii

During a recent vacation in Hawaii, I left the HNL airport and attempted to get onto the freeway to my hotel in Waimea. It took over 5 min for the satillites to find my location. Once we had our location, we were directed to the freeway from the airport. If you've ever driven in Hawaii, you know the freeways have multiple names and can be difficult to identify. Needless to say, we were directed to stay on the Left, and we missed our freeway entrance which was slightly more left than the furthermost R exit- which we would need to make a right turn onto. 'Jack' repeatedly directed us to make a U turn, however that means we would have to go into a US military base to make that turn. As we waited in line to get into the base, the car in front of stops, then makes a U-turn back onto the freeway. Embaressed and red in the face, we go up to the guard. " Again?" he says? "Ha Ha, don't you know, those things don't work on this island!" Evidently we aren't the first (that day) to make that mistake regarding the freeway entrances.

Hawaii GPS

I was in Maui and Oahu back in February over a 10 day period and had no problems either acquiring satellites or had any navigational problems with our nuvi 660. The device worked really well and I thought the Hawaiian street names were pronounced quite well by Jill. We were very happy with nuvi's performance! Don't know why locals would make such a statement???

I wonder if the wife would think a trip to Hawaii to test the new GPS out is a good idea??? I like the idea myself.

good idea

I think a representative of the POI Factory needs to check out this phenomenon and come back with accurate information to pass on to the community;)

I have not been to Hawaii yet, however it is on Jon's list of things to do before he dies. Well actually it is to go visit a live volcano, however most of the ones we would like to see just happen to be in Hawaii so I will be supportive and go with him when it is time.

Island bound

I'll be going over in the middle of July. Going to Maui for a day then to the island Lanai for 3 or 4 days. I'll take the nuvi and test it on one of the more remote islands.

GPS use in Hawaii

I have used several Garmin units in Hawaii. Garmin GPS V Delux, GPSMAP 276C, GPSMAP376C, and GPSMAP 478. I recommend that users having difficulty use new location find using a map. I'll be taking my 2820 in July and will post in the results from it after that.

Miss Poi, you have to go. Been there, done that, and got a number of T-Shirts. It is truly wonderful. We did the 10-day cruise around the islands and visited a number of them. Cruse part is over rated but the islands were wonderful.

Re: GPS in Hawaii

My wife and I just eloped, along with another couple, to Hawaii this past January, and over there, both my Pocket PC and my friend's Garmin Nuvi 660 performed very well. We only stayed in Kauai though, which has one main roadway going only about 3/4 around the island, but had no problems obtaining a fix. I can think of a few reasons for your experience, for example, old or inaccurate map data: GIS-data companies, such as Navteq and Tele Atlas, rely on the information submitted by the cities and municipalities. As you know, the island moves at a different pace than the mainland, so the data may take a little bit longer to be updated wink. We noticed this on the road that goes around Lihue airport, which just had changes to the returns. This problem is accentuated as the road network gets more complex. I don't think the guard meant that literally, more likely he has heard of others having the same problem, since the map data sources are the same for everybody. For the slow fix, I can only guess your unit may have had to take a moment to switch and load maps/readjust when you first powered it up.

I wish it were true

Thanks for noticing! I don't have any souvenirs, but if you are looking for yummy snacks or something diff to bring back home rather than choco covered macademian nuts- I have a great suggestion. I'm interested in a Long's Drugstore POI file for Hawaii. I found the BEST Hawaiian snacks there, that are not as over-priced as the tourist places. Have you ever had Hawaiian Princess Carmel Popcorn? Twice Baked Cinammon Toast in a bag? Hurricaine Popcorn(my favorite!!!)? Or at Walmart, we got Portugese Sausage - cooked it up for breakfast... Yumm... And Furikaki Mix? Mango or Taro Pancake mix? It's a whole new world of snacks and goodies at the local market. Yumm! Beware, I picked up a box of choco-dipped shortbread cookies for $7.50!!! 12 cookies the diameter of quarters...Ack!!!

I live in Hawaii

Hi,

I just joined the forum (first post) and happened to find this thread. I know this is late, but I thought I’d add that I live in Hawaii. I’ve done a lot of Geocaching here as well as street navigating, and there is NO problem with GPS reception here. The guard that told the OP that they don’t work here was either having fun with her or was simply uninformed. I’m betting that the base was Pearl Harbor or Hickam Air Force Base, either of which is very easy to mistakenly end up at the entrance gate. I can assure everyone, I’ve found no difference between reception here and on the mainland.

Not working in HI

Anytime you travel several hundred miles, it takes time to acquire the satellites. This is due to the changes of orbit, and to the almanac having to be "reloaded". Once acquired, it should be fine.

I was in HI, and kept forgetting what "State" I was in, I'd put the ISLAND name in for the state, talk about feeling foolish. Other than user error, it worked great!

GPS Works Very Well In Hawaii

I go to Hawaii often and stay in Honolulu most of the time. Last trip I took a Nuvi 350 with me. I used it to get to the north shore and it worked very well. I also needed to get my hair cut and it found a place 1.5 blocks from my hotel as well as other places in the area.

No problems in Hawaii

I go to the islands at least once a year. I've used my Nuvi 660 on both Oahu and Kauai without any trouble.

Where am I?

I travel to a different state every week and get frustrated when I jump in the rental car and have to wait a long time for the GPS to acquire the signal. I know it sounds impatient, but remember, this is every week, after sitting on a plane for a while.

Sometimes it "times out" and asks me if I'm inside and if I'm in (last state used). Is there some way to tell the GPS where I am, so that it can find the birds more quickly, before it starts asking me qustions?

FYI: Garmin StreetPilot C580

You must go to the North shore of Oahu and have a snow cone. They put ice cream in the bottom of it and then just about any flavor you want on top. I would have never tried it but my friend, a local, told me to and I couldn't beleive how good it was. A must if you get that way

No problems with Nuvi 660

I had no problems in Hawaii with my Nuvi 660. I stayed at the Hilton beach resort in Honolulu and drove all over the Island. I spent time at Schofield Barrack, and Pearl Harbor. I also went to all the sumits (custom POI's from this site) to take pictures. The only problem I did have was the waterfall POI (from this site) lead me to a one mile dismounted hike that resulted in no waterfall. I was later informed by a local that that particular waterfall is only active when they get a lot of rain. It was a fun hike anyway.

Got similar route direction in Mexico

amontman wrote:

LMOL

That's the kind of driving direction you get when you drive to Mexico, "just make a right when u see a shop with a yellow dog in front". I guess the dog usually just lie at the front of the shop... Wonder what would happen if the dog decided to go somewhere else for a moment.

Not every GPS works good

I live on Maui and have some experience with different GPS Nav systems.

I recommend that if you have a TomTom, or any other TeleAtlas map-based system for that matter, you may want to leave it at home. On Maui, TomTom (or DumbDumb, as I started to call it) thinks you can travel on all the private agricultural cane roads (despite the no trespassing signs and the occasional gate), doesn't know about any road made in the last decade, and have POIs that are ancient history and sparse. For instance, if you get off the plane and ask it for a fast food joint, it will know of the old ones across town but not the 5 year old ones on the main road going out of airport. Looking for a mid-price restaurant; don't trust DumbDumb/TomTom as it is likely to tell you about place that have long closed down. Also, Mokulele highway connecting Kihei/Wailea (resort area) to Kahului (where the airport is) was rebuilt/rerouted like 8 years ago; TomTom knows nothing about this and will think you are 4x4-ing it through a field. Oh, and the best one is when it tells you to turn left in the middle of the highway where there is no crossroad anywhere to be seen. Classic.

I have a Magellan 4250. It knows about the new route of Mokulele between Kihei and Kahului, does not recommend any cane roads, and is as accurate as one could hope. Navteq does a decent job in Hawaii so I suspect Garmin would be just as good.

Never a problem in Hawaii,

Never a problem in Hawaii,

Depends on the brand

I used to live on Oahu, and I think part of the mixup is that only some brands of GPS work in Hawaii. Garmin works. I know for a fact that Toyota doesn't even sell GPS units in their new vehicles since the brand they use does not have coverage.

FYI

"lack of coverage" does NOT imply "won't work"...my non-mapping capable GPS-12 (dinosaur) works just find there smile

--
nüvi 200

Does it work??

It all depends on which brand you have. I live in Hawaii and bought one so that life was easier. If you are coming to visit, bring it, unless you can spell and say the Hawaiian names of the streets as you are traveling 30mph down the road.

We have a Tom Tom and it works, to an extent. The problem over here is the coverage maps are great and everything works fine, but the search on the Tom Tom. We have a large portion of the island set up with address like - 95-2863 Puukaa Street. The problem is the "-" between the numbers, and no leaving it out doesn't work on the Tom Tom.

The company is aware of the problem and have been promising a fix for 8 months.

So yes the maps work, yes the coverage works, and yes it is smart to bring it over. It saves time and frustration trying to spell the names like - Kalanianaole Hwy

What Map?

North American Map works fine in Hawaii

My last trip to Hawaii (October 07) my North American map worked great, nothing to add at all. Just plug it in when you get there and go....in fact I did just that when my cab driver didn't know where my hotel was..I had to navigate for him. smile

Thanks for the info. That's a funny story. I don't see why all cab drivers don't have these.

LOST not lost....

I kept getting LOST when I was there, I had a hard time getting a fix because the island kept moving....

Hawaii

Having a TomTom 930 - I was well aware of issue with addresses with a - in them.

One workaround for this: I would use google maps to find the locations that I was planning on visiting while on the big island, and then use the "send to GPS" option that is availible, and saved them as favorites. (the location is sent to the GPS as a coordinate, and not an address)

In Ohau - I didn't really have any issues with mapping.
