U turn right into a military base in Hawaii

During a recent vacation in Hawaii, I left the HNL airport and attempted to get onto the freeway to my hotel in Waimea. It took over 5 min for the satillites to find my location. Once we had our location, we were directed to the freeway from the airport. If you've ever driven in Hawaii, you know the freeways have multiple names and can be difficult to identify. Needless to say, we were directed to stay on the Left, and we missed our freeway entrance which was slightly more left than the furthermost R exit- which we would need to make a right turn onto. 'Jack' repeatedly directed us to make a U turn, however that means we would have to go into a US military base to make that turn. As we waited in line to get into the base, the car in front of stops, then makes a U-turn back onto the freeway. Embaressed and red in the face, we go up to the guard. " Again?" he says? "Ha Ha, don't you know, those things don't work on this island!" Evidently we aren't the first (that day) to make that mistake regarding the freeway entrances.

I went to Oahu with my hand-held Garmin GPSMAP 76 about 2 years. This was before I got the Nuvi model.

At first the GPSMap 76 has difficult time picking up signal, through out the island. Then I recognized that because the shape of the roof/windsheild of the rental car, I need to reposition it differently. Note this is a hand-held GPS therefore I should have bring an external antenna and mount to the roof to get the best reception.

When outside of the car, this GPS works perfectly without any problem.

Your 750 will work just fine but probably take a a long time to aquire satelites for the first time after relocating such a long distance.

Garmin in Hawaii

I have used our Garmin 250W in Hawaii on two different trips. The first time was on Oahu and Kauai in 2008 and Oahu, Maui, and Kauai in 2009. We did not encounter any problems with it. It may have taken a couple of extra minutes to locate the satellites, but not the end of the world. Plan for it...

GPS in Hawaii

I was on Kawai, Oahu, and The Big Island several times the past few years and the GPS worked just fine.

Address entry in Hawaii

We have a Tom Tom and it works, to an extent. The problem over here is the coverage maps are great and everything works fine, but the search on the Tom Tom. We have a large portion of the island set up with address like - 95-2863 Puukaa Street. The problem is the "-" between the numbers, and no leaving it out doesn't work on the Tom Tom.

The company is aware of the problem and have been promising a fix for 8 months.

Does anyone know if Tom Tom has fixed this problem with address entry? I just purchased an XL 335S and was trying to locate an address (44-350) in Kaneohe (Oahu) but could not enter the - in the house number. All of the house numbers ranges on the streets around Kaneohe are shown as 44,44 without the extra 3 digits while POIs seem to just dispay the street and cross-street. I will have to exchange for another brand if it hasn't been fixed.

My last trip to Hawaii (October 07) my North American map worked great, nothing to add at all. Just plug it in when you get there and go....in fact I did just that when my cab driver didn't know where my hotel was..I had to navigate for him. smile

lol

I'm sure he had "no clue" where the hotel was.

Aloha Friday

Have been to the Honolulu area three times, never a problem with the 750 (First two times) or the 765T this last time. I think you need to find new locals to get information from. lol.

Hawaii

If GPS works on a ship...anywhere at sea...it will work on an island...anywhere at sea... Believe me, with all the commercial shipping and air traffic associated with the islands, Hawaii does not have its own "special GPS jammers".

As long as you have the

As long as you have the local maps to (automatically) overlay your plot... GPS is everywhere. G = Global afterall.

What the soldier probably meant, was that the maps of the roads don't differentiate between public and military roads. So it may suggest routing that isn't permitted to non-military personnel.

You don't even need a road, if you go offroad, the GPS tracks your location and you can estimate where you are relative to a road on the map (though you may have to zoom out if you're really remote, like on my driveway.)

Looking for Oahu Generic POI File

Taking the family to Oahu, HI this week. Does anyone have a POI file for places in Oahu? Nothing specific, but a POI file with anything of interest in Oahu. We are leaving in 2 days and would really like to find such a POI file. Unfortunately, no luck. If going to the Big Island, I found a nice POI file, but nothing for Oahu. I know most stuff is probably somewhat easy to find, but who knows. Maybe someone has a gem of a POI file with things we might not think of otherwise.

Anyone have a file they can share?

Thanks,

Man v Food was there

I don't recall which island, but the place he was at looked great...

GPS works fine, Maps might be an issue

We went in 1996 and I had a brand new Apollo Precedus Aviation Portable, no surface maps, but you could load up to 1,000 Waypoints and it worked great for driving and hiking, as well as flying.

On the 'Custom' Page of the Garmin 2011.20 Download there is a note that says:

*unverified government data used in Hawaii

Were I to visit again; I think a good Topo Map would be worthwhile for my Nuvi 755.

Not to worry

You can count on your hotel or nearby hotel providing a visitor welcome breakfast. They will provide you with tour and attractions list, but try not to buy to many. Look them up on the GPS.

Must sees, sorry about the spelling errors.
Polynesian Village, Palalayie Look-out, Grand Island Tour, Luals, snorking

Waste of money
horseback riding, atv riding (both of these at a ranch were they filmed Jurassic Park and Pearl Harbor).

On the Big Island, The MSN

On the Big Island, The MSN etc services do not exist. Period.
The GPS works with the latest updates for maps, with the knowledge that the BIg island isn't on the list for full updates for new streets for some unkown reason.
stores and roads that have been here for more than 5 7 yeaRS STILL ARE NOT LISTED.

The Garmin does have a problem with Hawaiian names.

Garmin states it is Government supplied data for Hawaii, which is probably the reason. Military bases etc.

bogus

Of course, it is nonsense that a GPS would not work in the 50th state. Since there is plenty of speculation here (and I need to post something this week) I'll add my 2 cents worth. Maybe those who spread this story kust hd GPS units with the 48 state maps in them, and just didn't have a map for the area.

Maui

Garmin 855, works just fine in Maui, no problems and internal POI's are all I need. Just remember toset your city and the unit will find the satelites quickly, less than 15 seconds for me...

Always on the Road Knowing where I've Been

No issues with Oahu and Maui

I was recently in both Oahu and Maui, not once did I have issues with satellite reception or inaccurate maps. We took a trip around the southern part of Maui to Hana from the west, wonderful trip. The navigation was great around the curves along the mountain side.

Take your GPS and enjoy the trip!
