The Price of Success

It seems that Apple is in an unfamiliar position - that of a target for (unwarranted) criticism. The video seems to be based on some unfounded rumour and the two talking heads used that piece of speculation to take pot shots at the Apple "culture".

For the past decade Apple has released products that were at the cutting edge of consumer technology. They may not have invented the technology but they marketed it better than anyone else.

They have always made quality products that are better than similar equipment on the market... but that just isn't good enough for some people. If their new product does not revolutionize the consumer electronic market, it is considered a failure.

It seems that Apple has become a victim of its own success.

Similar to how Micro$oft was treated previously. I'm not the first to insert the $ in their name. I just did so to point out how Microsoft was treated when they were at the top. smile

New iPhone 5 user

Well, the wife is after dropping her 4 into the toilet. Touch panel was shorted out and wouldn't work after the old rice in a bag trick. I've got the 4 but believe i like her 5 a little better. I'm still going to hold out for the 5s or ...

Just keep forgetting, you get nothing

Considering the design, material sourcing, manufacturing and distribution lead time, iPhone 6 probably is getting close to go into pre-production.

So, why not just wait for iPhone 6 instead? Or better yet, get a iPhone 5 today if you really need/want one.

Always a new one around the corner

You could spend your whole life waiting for the "next big thing!" I bought an iPhone 5 when they first came out. Love it! I'll get the 5S or the 6 for my wife.

maybe this is the reason for rushing 5s

Too Funny

There are complaints that things are updated too often, then there are complaints that updates aren't often enough.

Make up your minds.

I can't wait

A new iPhone? Not a surprise.

All these cell companies make incremental improvements to their equipment and market it like IT IS TOTALLY NEW, AND YOU MUST HAVE IT.

BLACKBERRY used to do this, and now people aren't buying them, even though it is FAR more secure, and easier to use than ANDROID or APPLE.

The public is noticing APPLE is doing the same thing, and sales are dropping off.

ANDROID is a OPERATING SYSTEM, not a phone. The quality of the phone depends on the manufacturer of the phone, and most older phones can upgrade to the current OS for free.

The problem is the last update, the iPhone 5 was a pretty lame update.

Many of my friends who were iPhone addicts were disappointed by the iPhone 5 and switched to Android or other phones.

Apple is going to have to innovate a lot more than just stretch the screen a little, add LTE (a year later than many Android phones) and call it good.

I did hear one young woman say the amount of updates were just right. She had curly blonde hair.

Got iPhone5 for Christmas

And I think it's great! Rumors have it that the trend for smartphones is make them larger. I believe the iPhone5 is about the limit on bigness for me. Also new phones may come in choice of several new colors. Black is my choice, now and later.

That's What The Paying Customers Want

The companies that make these things do so because the customers want it. A company is not going to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to develop a product that nobody is going to buy. The market is there and the company provides product to that market. Pretty simple and sometimes too obvious.

Revisions have to happen. Imagine if we were still using Windows 1.0? Technology advances. Look at what has happened to photography... no more film. Photos are now available instantly, photos can be shared immediately. No handling film, waiting for it to be developed, then getting prints and enlargements. What I would have paid in film and film processing over the last couple years far exceeds the price of a really good DSLR. That is progress, and I'm looking forward to where it is heading.

Quibble all you want about adjacent revisions. But pick up an original iPhone and compare it to an iPhone 5. The original iPhone was groundbreaking, a truly revolutionary device. The iPhone 5 blows away the original iPhone. I couldn't imagine going back to an original iPhone. And it happened in only a few years.

This is what's great about

This is what's great about capitalism and supply and demand. We arguably have open competition and options. The money Uncle Sam lets us keep, we get to spend how we want.

Lately

Lately, we get to keep less & less money with Uncle Sam & his brethern at the State level!!!

I had no issues with the last update since I was coming from the iphone 3gs. I can see from the 4 perspective that it wasn't enough but the 4 designed was great to begin with. Can win everyone over.

Just wait

for the iPhone 6, to be paired with the new iWatch that enables notifications, caller ID display, personal metrics (HR, BP, walking pace), GPS coordinates/navigation. etc.

All rumor.

But there's always something better around the next corner, so hang on to that brick-size cellphone and wait for it. smile

Apple is tight-lipped about these things. I suspect this is just rumors although another iPhone each year is not anything new. It just might be a few months earlier than before. I love iPhone but I think it's much less revolutionary than it once was. Motorola and others have really caught up.

Not enough difference for me to move from the 4S to the 5. Unfortunately I now carry 2 4S phones since I was issued one for work too.

For The TechnoGeeks

It's like computers/laptops. As soon as you buy the latest and greatest, they come out out with a better one. I'm not sure what the iPhone 5S would have that would make me want to immediately go out and buy the newest model. I just purchased the iPhone 5, my first iPhone. I'll probably keep this until it quits working. After all the 5S will probably only have a few little additional quirks that I wouldn't use and thus not justify the additional expense.

After all, there's a few things that Apple needs to fix on the iPhone 5 before they offer a new version.

But for those TechnoGeeks who have to have the latest and greatest.... it's a boon.

OK.....so where the heck am I?

I rocked the iPhone 3GS

I rocked the iPhone 3GS until I upgraded to the iPhone 5 recently. I am very happy to have the 5, and I will be happy with it for at least 3 years (as long as it functions for that long). My personal philosophy on upgrading my iPhone is this: I continue to use my phone until my provider rolls out a significantly faster network that my phone cannot function on.

I can do without the minor functionality improvements to hardware. You still get many improvements via iOS updates, although you may miss out on a few of the software perks due to lack of necessary hardware.

The HPSA+ network wasn't that much better than 3G, so I skipped the iPhone 4 and 4S. The current LTE is incredibly fast and totally worth the upgrade. By the time a new speedy network rolls out I will be well out of contract and will have gotten my money's worth from the phone. Sign me up for the next new network!

Not sure why they make a big

Not sure why they make a big deal about it as Samsung comes out with something new just as often as Apple. Oh well. I have the Iphone 4S and have no plans to upgrade it any time soon. It does everything that I want it to do and more plus it's paid for.

I have a lot of Apple

I have a lot of Apple products and I like them. Apple needs to start listening to what the people want and not what they want. I have the iPhone 4S which was my first iPhone. I have no plans to upgrade any time soon. I wish Apple would put in a memory slot, bigger screen than 4 inches and several other things. Apple will start listening maybe when people leave the platform.

They're doing it right, like it or not

You gotta admit that folks are buying the iPhone and the iPads in large numbers. Apple products may miss on a few points occasionally, but they're the best on the block. And Microsoft is helping their cause with Windows 8!

I agree with the PP. Most

I agree with the PP. Most of the recent improvements are incremental. It takes something like the addition of 4G LTE to motivate upgrades. Most people can skip upgrade cycles and not look back.
