Nuvi 760 replacement battery

I need to replace a worn out battery in a 760 so that my daughter can use it on her bicycle when she moves to DC. Has anyone had experience with this battery offered in eBay? It's inexpensive but is it cheap?

Wow

Wow, now that's a cheap price. I can't answer your question about that Seller or the battery. Let's hope someone else can give you an answer about this Seller. The Seller feedback is great so it might work for you if you already have the tools you need.

Note that this eBay item appears to be a battery only, while other internet sites (like the ones I've ordered my nuvi 750 replacement battery from) include the two tools (Torx driver and plastic pry bar):

or

Note that using a metal pry bar, screw driver, or whatever to open the case will almost certainly leave the two halves of the nuvi's case seriously cosmetically damaged.

I would

I would think you'd be a lot better off paying a little more and getting one with the "tool kit" included with the battery. Changing the battery is the easy part, it's getting the Nuvi open that require these tools that is the hard part.

There is a video at http://www.newpower99.com/Garmin_Nuvi_760_Battery_Replacemen... that details the process.

You should be able to find a battery and tool kit combo on eBay for only a few dollars more than the one you refer to.

Replacement Battery

I have the torx drivers, pry tool already, that's why just the battery is so attractive. I just didn't want it to be depleted in 6 months, & have to have it mail back to me to put in another one.

For what it's worth

Ah, given this info, for what it's worth, I think I'd try the eBay battery, if only as an experiment. The only big issue I could see is that if the eBay battery is never used but still quite old (since these batteries have both a # of recharges issue and a lifespan from being made issue), that the battery will possibly need a 2nd replacement sooner than if a fresher battery were used. We're not talking big bucks here, so it's more of a convenience issue. If the battery had to replaced again with your daughter in DC and you in OH, the back and forth shipping would make a fresher battery a better deal financially since round-trip shipping will probably be $10 or so.

I'd for certain try the eBay battery if the intended use was in a motor vehicle with a normal 12V power supply. Given that this unit's intended use is on a bicycle where it's totally dependent on the internal battery, I'd think once or twice about which battery to purchase.

If you really want to invest some effort in figuring out which to buy, you could ask each seller about the age of the battery. Some batteries come with Manufacture dates. Note, too, although this may just be a labeling issue, the eBay battery is listed as a 1200 mAh battery while the two others in this thread are called 1250 mAh batteries, with about 4% more capacity.

Then again, with the potential for theft or weather damage on a bicycle-mounted GPS, maybe you only need to worry about a few month's use wink

Let us know what you decided--and in several months, let us know how it's working out. This may of use to others here at The Factory looking for the best deal on replacement batteries.

I purchased this one

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Battery-Garmin-Nuvi-270-710-710T-750... for just a couple dollars more. I have had it in my 755T since March and it works great; actually better than the original one did when it was new.

I never like to pass up a good deal, and this eBay link sure seems like a good one. But I have had issues with cheap replacements batteries in the past. For me, I just felt more comfortable with the newpower99 solution. I didn't have the tools previously, either, so that was a factor. I think CraigW makes great points. At $5, try it as an experiment. I have had no issues so far with the newpower99 battery, but then again, I only just installed it about a month ago.

labor

Laptop batteries are the same, I have a genuine Lenovo replacement that was $120 on eBay, and $180 online. I kept it unused and verified it was factory brand-new (the software indicates how many times it's been charged).

Decided to get a $23 replacement--first one failed in only 2 wks. So I exchanged it, and the replacement has been going for about 14 mos.

Gray market is hit/miss.....

Most Times You Get What You Pay For

If it were for my own GPS I would roll the dice and buy it for the 5.00. I'd primarily be using it on automobile power though. But since it's for your daughter to use on a bicycle the lower 1200mAh would concern me since it won't hold a charge as long as the 1250mAh that comes stock with the Nuvi 760.

Here is another link from a online retailer for 19.00
but includes tools you don't need. It comes with a 1 year guarantee. Since she will be in a different state it may make more sense to spend more now than later should the 5.00 one fail. Maybe you can call them and request battery only to reduce the price.

Replacement Battery

Thanks for all the advice from the community. I had not thought of the "freshness" & cost of shipping the Nuvi back to me for battery replacement factors, thanks CraigW. I'm going to have to give it a little more thought before getting the el cheapo.
