...And can someone confirm that it works with sox.exe?

The changelog looks promising:

◦Fixed issue where where POI loader would delete premium GPI files from devices

◦Fixed several issues regarding registry data access

◦Fixed an issue with very long file paths

POI loader

I think it was the the issue before last, I had a lot of trouble with it. Instead of deleting the old POIs it would just add the new ones to the end of the list giving me two complete sets of POIs. Im glad I kept the old loader. The last one worked great, it would ask me if I wanted to get rid of the old ones.
Has anyone tried the new one for bugs?

Agreed... But for the Mac version to still be on 2.2.x when the windows version is now on 2.7.x seems like a big disparity.

I know I recently found an issue with the Mac version (string lengths longer than 255 characters) which is completely resolved by the windows version...

Version

Anyone know how to tell what version you currently have? I don't see anything when I start the POI Loader that tells me.

For Widnows computers...

donbadabon wrote:

...right-click the upper left corner of the POI Loader's window (where it says POI Loader) and that'll let you choose "Check for Software Updates..." or "About POI Loader..."

I learned this from someone else here. I never would have thought to find this on my own.

.

Launch POI Loader, click on the icon in the top left of the window, then About POI Loader...

EDIT: CraigW beat me to it! Note - it doesn't matter if you right-click or left-click on the icon smile

Wow, there's a little difference:

Left or right clicks work if you click the upper-leftmost icon as you suggest; right-click only works for me if I click the words "POI Loader."

...anyone need a worm? wink

Right Click in Title Bar

For me, right-click works anywhere along the title bar at the top of the POI Loader window (version 2.7.2 or 2.7.1)

2.5.4 has some good points but the 7x increase in speed of processing POI more than makes up the differences.

I'm still using version 2.5.4 as it does everything I want well & can spare the extra 30 seconds it takes to load.

A Bit of a Problem

The new POI Loader s/w worked but it stopped on two files - Marriot Brand hotels & Montgomery County Liquor stores. My understanding is that there's an error in the file which my old POI Loader ver 2.5.4 never found.

Any chance that those old files can be fixed? Anyone responsible for them?

Thanks.
Fred

marriott line 2456

I get an error at line 2456 but I have not figured out why yet.

2.7.1

My 2.7.1 says there are no updates available. Looks like someone has failed to let the Garmin servers know that this update exists.

2.7.1

My 2.7.1 doesn't show any updates either.

No Reason

I have found no reason to upgrade from 2.5.4. It's a very stable release and works just fine.

I have both versions on my

I have both versions on my PC.

If the new version 2.7.2 would successfully process all the gpx & csv files I download, I'd use it. BUT if it stops processing the files I use, then what difference is it that it processes faster???

@FZbar,

If you go to the 5323 line of the file you will see that the line leads with a "-" in front of a phone number which is confusing POI Loader. I just added a 1 in front of the phone number to match the other lines and the file compiles fine.

Though it is inside the quotes, the minus sign starting the line is making it think the line before has no end quote, I guess.

EDIT: I emailed this info to msgreenf.

I haven't figured this one out yet except for the fact that Win 7 NotePad and MS Word 2007 don't understand the "CR/LF" in the file either. I opened the file with a text editor called UltraEdit 32, switched to hex mode and the "0D 0A" are all in the appropriate places but still for some reason NotePad, MS Word and POI Loader all ignore most of them. If I open the file in WIN 7 NotePad all of the POIs lines are together on 3 lines when wordwrap is off. In MS Word most of the CR/LFs after the phone numbers are being ignored.

I opened the file and deleted "Phone: " in all 26 POIs, saved the file and now it compiles with POI Loader v2.7.2.

EDIT: Just and FYI ... The maintainer jhason doesn't look like he has been active for 2 1/2 years.

Montgomery County POIs

The Montgomery County Maryland Liquor Stores POI file is in Unix format.

POI Loader 2.7.2 (as well as 2.7.1) process it without errors if you convert it to Mac or PC format.

FZbar, email me via my contact form if you want the file. Since it was last updated in 2007, do you know if it's still valid?

Don't know what you mean by PC format. What do I have to run to convert it?

I haven't checked out the file locations. Once in awhile while I'm in a different part of Montgomery County & may try to find a store, but rarely, so it's not that important.

End of Line Conversions

FZbar wrote:

End of line code in Windows, Mac and Linux/Unix text files are different. Windows expects CR/LF while Unix uses LF. Since Windows doesn't see the CR in the .CSV file it mashes all the text together into one gigantic paragraph which screws POI Loader up.

To solve this, you need to install Notepad++ as it has an end of line conversion submenu in its edit menu. Open the POI file in Notepad++, select Edit, then EOL Conversion, then select Windows format. Then save the file and load it into POI Loader. It should compile properly after doing this.

I'm Confused

I'm confused. Viewing the file in a hex editor as it was downloaded, it has a CR/LF (0D 0A) at all of the end of lines and after each zip code. So why is it not being seen by WIN 7 Notepad or POI Loader?

I can't answer that as I

I can't answer that as I don't have a copy of the file to look at. I was simply building off what WAASup mentioned about the MD Liquor Stores POI being in Unix format.

If you or WAASup could shoot me a copy of the file using my contact page I can take a look at it in Notepad++ and see what's up. Or is it still available on the site?

EDIT: Downloaded from the site. As expected, the End of Line control characters were set for Unix format instead of Windows. Converting the EOL character to Windows Format in Notepad++ fixes the problem. The file opens correctly in Windows Notepad, Wordpad, and Word 2010. Which means it should function properly in POI Loader, as WAASup mentioned.

--
"Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job." --Douglas Adams

Thanks Strephon Alkhalikoi

Just got home a while ago and saw your posts. It was exactly as you describe...

I used Notepad++ to view the file in hex, then used its Format -> Convert to Windows Format function to change the Unix LFs to Windows CR/LF pairs for end of line characters.

--
Nüvi 2595LMT

Downloaded NotePad++

NotePad++ does see the file as having UNIX EOL characters and the convert EOL to Windows worked just as it should.

Looking at the file with UltraEdit in Hex mode the file looks no different before or after the conversion. I found a setting deep in the program configuration tabs that auto detects and converts UNIX files but saves the file in it's original format. Unchecked this and now I see just the LF character. Oh well, just another operator error, again! shock

Thanks,

Marriott File

FZbar,

Did you get your Marriott file working?

Please Try this

I hope everyone reading this thread will take the time to download and install Notepad++.

Why, well for one reason, it is used by Strephon_Alkhalikoi. I’m sure you have noticed that it is Strephon who steps in to give the technical explanations of things that have stumped us. If he uses it, I think the rest of us should have it in our toolbox.

Another reason is that it is completely FREE and PORTABLE. Being portable means that it does not require an installation that effect your registry. It can be run directly off a flash drive.

Get a copy of Notepad++ at http://portableapps.com/apps/development/notepadpp_portable

Put the downloaded file into a folder and then “run” the executable. It will ask you what language you prefer (English being the default) and then ask you which directory you wish the program to be installed to. I always make sure I install the program into the same directory I am currently running the executable from. I have a directory called PortableApps (which puts it on my C:\ drive right next to Program Files). I have sub-directories for each portable app (did you know that EPE can be portable if you have a file called EPE.ini in the directory where it resides?).

After you run the …paf.exe executable, you can delete it as all it did was to expand the a bunch of internal zipped files for you.

To run Notepad++, double-click on Notepad++Portable.exe.

To understand what Strephon has said above – after you have downloaded (and expanded) Notepad++, download the Marriott file from here - http://www.poi-factory.com/node/5990

Open the Marriott file with Notepad++

In the menu bar, click on View > Symbols > Show All Characters.

Note that you see the “LF” and “CR” symbols, but not a “CR/LF”

In the menu bar, click on Edit > EOL Conversion > Windows Format

Note that the “CR” is now “CR LF”

Before saving this corrected file, run your regular Windows Notepad and open the Marriott file. Looks like one big paragraph, doesn’t it.

“X” out of the Windows Notepad version of Marriott.

Save the Notepadd++ version of Marriott. Then reopen the edited Marriott file with Windows Notepad.

See the difference?

Yup. Thanks. Fred
