Garmin Software Update Spam?

I received an email from what looks like Garmim, but I'm cynical and presume it's spam.

I called Garmin but they were not yet open.

Here is the text:

"We have discovered an issue with software version 2.50 on nüvi 30, 40 and 50 models that could potentially cause your device to not work properly. To correct this issues, please update the software on your device to version 2.60."

There is, of course, a link I will not click without speaking to Garmin first, and even then, I'd go to their website and not click on an email link.

It may be valid . . .

. . . but then again it may not.

It passes the first test (assuming your copy skills are accurate) in that there are no spelling mistakes.

Just check out the actual link information (not just what you see, but the properties of the link).

Or better yet, why not take the opportunity to plug your navigator into your computer, open up 'My Garmin' and check for an update yourself.

Report your findings back in this thread.

There is an Update to 2.60

Thanks for the post as I did NOT get an email for my Nuvi 40. I went to MyGarmin with my unit connected and it showed an update was available. After the update was installed, I did have to power it up a second time for the unit to connect to the computer. The first time it just sat there with no power up. It now shows that it is up-to-date on myDashboard.

I agree about clicking on email links, so you're right about going to the website.

Thanks for the update MikeG1

I will have to wait until I get home to connect my unit as I don't have admin rights at work.

I'm glad to see there is an update, and it seems the email was not spam.

It is indeed legit. I wish

It is indeed legit. I wish they would update some of the others...

From Garmin website:

Quote:

Changes made from version 2.40 to 2.60:
Fixed an error that caused some units to freeze during startup.

why so much panic?

I don't really see any problem here. There is two ways to update firmware in Garmin GPS. One is to use Web Updater, other through MyDashboard panel. So instead panicking about spam or something sinister in email just go to one of those places and check if there really is update. You don't have to click any links in email to do so. There is no reason to go hysterical and call everybody around about some email.

Before you get this "dangerous spam" again check your settings with Garmin, as you probably are signed to receive informations about updates. It will save you time on phone calls to Garmin when there will be new update.

What Panic?

Not seeing the "hye-stair-ricals" either. ;p}

rather than check Garmin

the question was posted for someone else to check for them. The flag should have been raised only if the email had proven bogus.
