Connecting usb cable around GPS usb connector

I have a Garmin Nuvi 200 that the usb connector broke off. So I was thinking of connecting an old usb cable to the battery connector. The battery has a red, green and black wire. After cutting off the male (small) end of my usb cable I see it has a red, green, black and white wire. I'm never going to connect to my pc again so what the heck. I would then connect the USB female (fat) end to a wall outlet charger. Any ideas or resomendations (be polite:)?

I'd just buy a new cable. smile

Voltage?

I am not really sure what you are trying to accomplish. Are you hoping to power your nuvi through a USB cable and bypass the battery? USB power is 5V, a nuvi battery is 3.7V. I don't know if that will cause a problem or not. I guess at this point you don't have much to lose since your nuvi is probably not usable without a USB port, and is not worth paying for a repair.

The battery may be 3.7v but the Garmin wall chargers are putting out 5 volt.

But the 5V is going thru the charging circuitry via the USB port, not the power circuit normally connected to the battery.

But I am like stlouieblues ... I would have fun trying to cobble it just to prove to myself that I could make it work. So I say "Go for it". If the 5V blows it out, so what. You can't use it the way it is anyway. Let us know if you are able to make it work.
