Announcing - Metro area projects

We are launching a new area on the site today. It is called metro areas. So far we have just one area, Boise, Id, there are no locations to download yet it is still under construction.

We will be adding more as you request the areas that you live in and would like to contribute to.

Eventually we will have a metro page for most metro areas in the US and Canada. If you would like to volunteer for your area let me know and I will get you hooked up.

We are really excited about this new project. This is all put together in the POI Factory database and each location is added individually. This makes it easy for several people to work together on the same file. Ideally we would like to have 2 to 6 people maintaining each metro area.

This is a pilot project, so we expect to make improvements as we gain experience working together.

You will be able to add personal snap shots of your area to the metro area pages.

Metro area maintenance

Some of the files that I made for the Metro areas remain empty and I have been getting quite a few emails wanting to know what is up with these files. I have now added the following note to the files in question.

"This file is under construction and has no locations in it yet. Please contact Miss Poi if you would like to help fill this file."

Here is a list of the empty files that need to be filled, Please let me know if you would like to volunteer for these open projects.

Boston MA - Popular Restaurants
Cincinnati, OH - Popular Restaurants
Dallas/FT. Worth - Top Attractions and Popular Restaurants
Los Angeles, CA - Top Attractions
Minneapolis, MN - Top Attractions
Phoenix, AZ- All files
San Francisco, CA Popular Restaurants, Night Life and Top Attractions
St. Louis, MO - Attractions

Thanks for all of your help with these projects.

And so would...

Denver Colorado, or the Front Range area.

San Diego, CA area

I will be glad to help on the San Diego area. I am very new to GPS and POI's so will need a little help with the process. Do you go to each location and get the coordinates and them put them in a Excel work sheet?

Gary C

Nova Scotia and Halifax

For now I'll tackle Halifax, NS. I'll also do some work province wide. Plan is exact co-ordinates from personal visit versus taken from some map or google. Let me know the format (csv or GPX)

Asheville NC

I live outside of Asheville NC and have been working on a "Western North Carolina Attractions" POI file. I would be glad to pull out just Asheville/Bumcombe county POI's and then add to it.

Rocky Mountain High

Ski season is fast approaching, I feel a lot of people headed this way, sure would be cool to have a Denver/Rocky Mountains project.

If you do come this way B.Y.O.O. (Bring Your Own Oxygen)

Denver/Colorado

Is there a Metro project going on for Colorado??

It's those changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes nothing remains quite the same. With all of our running and all of our cunning, If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane.

todays plan

I got the Transportation link back up now.

I will be making metro areas for Detroit Michigan for Rshan,

Toronto, CA for JCmilan,

Pittsburgh, PA for Slythex.

San Diego, CA for jmkthird & hognut

and Denver Colorado for you Frisbee Golfer.

I will put these at the top of my to do list today.
Right now our focus is to capture the larger well known cities.

Miss Poi

I got all those metro areas

I got all those metro areas done and also made one for The Palm Beaches area for clem530.

Contributing to Profects

How do we send in new locations, if we don't know which ones have been already covered?

You can send a note to one

You can send a note to one of the maintainers of the area you want to work in and see what they need help with.

OUTLET

Miss Poi,

I noticed on each state we don't have area on Outlets. If you like I can start looking for known outlets on each state that is on the metro pages. I can use the internet/google maps/google earth/ to mapped them and have the exact place. I know this will only work if the satellite picture is up to date.

Outlets

Gdlcjr,
Right now we have the Outlet shopping located together at this link.

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/7278

We would like to keep the metro areas for things other then shopping and other chain items.

We eventually will have more things broken down by state also. We are still figuring out the organization plan smile

ST. Louis Metro Attractions

A POI of the St. Louis Metro attractions already exists on this site. Suggest you start with that one. It's a good one and came in handy on my last trip.

Well, I guess that means I had better get to work and make you a page with some files to fill:)

Zuma,
What area are you in?

I can make a page for your metro area also if there is not one already there.

Miss POI

Atlanta, Georgia

I went and looked at the metro area for Atlanta and saw my B B & T POI which I thought was replaced. I can continue to make changes if desired. Anything else you would like me to work on in the same manner would suit me fine. Give me a topic and if not too large I will search for locations and Geo Code them or an address list and I will find their location (Long/Lat) and create a file. Just give me some direction.

Greater Boston

There are a few POI files that are not in the list of Greater Boston Area since they don't start with "B" in the alphabetical list. Don't know how to add them. How do you add to or edit the list?

Anyway, the already posted POI files are Greater Boston Golf Courses and two files from Lynn, MA (general area).

fixed

I have that file featured on the Boston page now, thanks for bringing that to my attention smile

Zuma,
It looks like we are missing the Popular restaurants file and the Top attractions file for that area. Would you be willing to add locations to those files if I make them for you?

Miss POI

Yes, I assume the CSV files or a list of names and addresses needing Long/Lat.

Tampa Bay Area

I would be willing to help start a project for the Tampa Bay Area in Florida. The area includes the major cities of Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater.

Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tampa_Bay_Area

It is a great winter vacation spot and not that far from Orlando.

I would just need some help and guidance to get going in the right direction. I've started looking at some of the other metro projects to see what they have contributed. Is there one, or more, of them that would serve as a good model to follow?

I will get that up later this afternoon;) The Metro area's that we have are in various stages. Some members requested them and then have not returned to the site to work on them so that have been waiting for people to come and fill the files that have been made.

Miss POI

Tampa Bay Area

OK! I'm retired, I have the time. smile

From reading some of the other posts here, it sounds like you have some kind of "blank" or predefined files that you can send me. If that's correct, it would be helpful and give me a starting point.

corpus christi, tx

can we add corpus christi, tx to the list of metro areas. i would be willing to contribute poi files.

thanks,
louis

yup,

I can make that happen, it may take me a day or two. I am a bit back logged right now and need to catch up.

Miss POI

Atlanta Area

I see you already have two people working the area. I'm new to GPS, my Nuvi 760 arrived about a week ago so I'm still learning. I'm very map, computer and database savvy so I can contribute right from the get go. I'm an Atlanta native and a volunteer tour guide for several tours with the Atlanta Preservation Center. I will be checking the existing materials now and I will have several suggested additions that I'll be making. Let me know if you need anything else that I can work on.

Atlanta Attractions file is

Atlanta Attractions file is limited by my knowledge. I am also an Atlanta native but don't want to clutter the file with insignificant attractions. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Your experience would provide great insight in what people wish to visit most often. My Streetpilot displays only the 50 closest locations so I hope to keep the list to 50. This will enable the GPSr user in the middle of Atlanta access to the 50 most prominent attractions.

Baltimore, hon?

Anyone else out there interested in Baltimore? I'd be willing to help out but I'm still pretty much a n00b so I'd need guidance.

I can help whenever you get around to doing Baton Rouge

Baltimore

I was just thinking that it was time to add Baltimore to the list.

I will see about getting that up by the end of the week;)

I will also get this Metro Area started;)

Orange County as a Metro area

I'd like to suggest Orange County, California as a separate metro area. True, it IS right next to LA county, and could be considered a suburban region, but it definitely has an identity of its own, and is separated by (admittedly very small) mountains. Yelp, Craigs List, and a number of other sites have Orange County listed as a separate region.

just something to think about.

I'd be glad to contribute a few items to the OC metro project

OC

I will add this to my list also, I should be able to get these up later this week.

Miss POI

corpus christi, tx

just a reminder, still looking for Corpus Christi, TX to be added when you get a chance.

Wow, that was a ball drop and a half. Sorry about that, I have added it to the list.

Miss POI

adding OC

Great - glad you decided to add it - and glad you decided to wait till later this week, cause I'm on vacation this week. After i get back to O.C. this weekend, I'll start getting some readings for some of the major attractions in the area.

Baltimore is on the map!
