As with every iPhone launch, there has been a flurry of reports about what will be different with the next model. I do not like Apple but I give them credit for their outstanding marketing! I don't see it as a scam, just effective use of social and commercial media.
Of course, if you continually raise expectations and don't deliver, people will view this type of marketing as manipulation. And then there is usually a backlash. It seems that cynicism is starting to be applied to Apple products, as I see more and more articles on the 'Net with sarcastic headlines when referring to iPhone/iPad releases.
Like the fan dancer, anticipation is often far better than what is delivered.

Who the heck needs a I Phone :?
My basic "stand alone" PanTech Breeze cell phone does exactly what I want it to (nothing more, nothing less).... making and receiving phone calls when I'm out and about.
I don't need a Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Maserati that costs Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars $$$$ and does over 200 mph.. when all I'm going to do is drive two blocks away to my local Mom and Pop grocery store to buy a quart of milk.

Well mine isn't closed. It was a simple download to jailbreak, something that even this 77 year old could do.
Same with my iPad 2 & 3. It must be the old hot rodder in me that likes to customize my "stuff".

MyWi. Google it.
Backgrounder. ditto
My3G. ditto
LocationHolic. I love this one because I can watch MLB on my iDevices. Nothing special except I can spoof my location and watch my teams home games.
ICaughtU Pro. This is also pretty cool. If I should lose my phone, or it's stolen, iCaughtU Pro will eMail me with the picture & location of anyone that tries to unlock my iDevice with the wrong code
RingerSwitchTool. Allows me to customize the action of the hardware buttons.
