STOP SIGN CAMERAS !!!

I heard on the local television news that a community in Maryland is trying to get approval to install a STOP SIGN camera.

I didn't even know they exist.

If these start popping up it will be something for poi-factory, garmin, etc.. to start including.

Prepare to come to a full complete stop, then wait 10 seconds to make sure the camera sees that you are stopped.

ugh

Hmmm

If I backup to a stop sign will the camera think I didn't stop? confused

At least nobody has thought of cameras to catch people picking their noses, or having long hair, bad makeup, etc etc Oh, maybe cameras to give tickets for eating or drinking while driving?

Read a story a couple of months ago about a fellow who made a complete stop prior to turning right at a stop light and got flashed. He circled around to see if it would happen again, and it did. He did this 3 more times before continuing on.

2 weeks later he got 5 tickets in the mail for not wearing a seat belt.

Drone traffic control

Doesn't take too much imagination to picture drone traffic enforcement either. Fly down the highway capturing pictures of speeders, fly along the back highways looking for speeding sportbikes, etc. With increased automation, no humans need be involved.

I'm not clear if that is what the newscast said, or perhaps your interpretation regarding 10 seconds.

Searching Maryland’s Vehicle and Traffic laws, I can't find anything that states a stop must be for ten seconds. My own interpretation, regardless of what state I’m driving is to come to a complete stop, then proceeds when safe to do so.

Maybe you just mentioned waiting 10 seconds would be a safe number to avoid getting a stop sign camera ticket.

He's just exaggerating to make the point that you better stay motionless for longer than a split-second so there can be no dispute about whether your stop was complete. He didn't really mean 10 seconds literally.

Unlike red-light cameras which may use video or use two still photos taken in sequence, one on yellow and one on red to establish where the car was at the time the light turned red, a stop sign camera would require video footage to prove the car did not come to a complete stop before crossing the stop line.

Many people don't stop completely. My sister-in-law THINKS she does and thought it was very unfair when she once got ticketed for a rolling stop, but she really doesn't come to a complete stop and represents additional tickets waiting to be written.

minority report is here

Researchers at MIT have been prototyping a "wasn't planning on stopping until my gps went off" camera that can detect your intention prior to the poi or cyclops file triggering your gps. We're going to have to tweak our proximity alerts, or maybe Garmin will come out with an intention jammer to beat this new system....

I wish they would take care of me less..

Mail box and Trash Can

I saw a video online in the State of Washington DC they have ricently install several speed camera , and Red light cameras discuise as mail box and trashcans, and it shows the actualy trashcan taking a picture of a car going over the speed limit.

Note that The Capital State is the first State to have install those new cameras.more State will follow.

Which CA?

I see CA used in this thread for both California and Canada ... I guess this international Internet thingy makes context a little more important ...

Come to a full stop, then have all occupants get out and run around the car three times, get back in and leave. Maybe that would prove a complete stop was made.

STOP SIGN CAMERAS!!!

telecomdigest2 wrote:

That's great, but have you considered the case (also in MARYLAND) last year of a camera that was giving speed tickets to drivers going at a legal speed? A business operator finally did the math between timestamps on the photos and convinced the judge that the claimed speeding was wrong and won. Then the court went back to finding responsible to everyone else that was falsely ticketed for the same thing even though it had just been proved in the same courtroom that the camera was a scam. The camera company later removed the number of decimal places for the timestamps, making it impossible to prove the machine's tickets are false.

Just this week a DC cop was found responsible for falsely approving camera tickets. In California and several other states, camera companies shortened the yellow phase from the traffic engineering safety guidance just so that they could get more tickets. The camera companies get a hefty portion (e.g. 50%) of ticket revenue so they have a strong incentive to play these games. It'a scam.

Just because you haven't had a bad experience (yet) does not make the system good. I haven't gotten into an accident with a drunk driver at night yet, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.

Very well said.

Red light vs. Speed Camera

Would be good to post here somewhere what exactly a red light and speed camera looks like. Believe they have changed from the first generation ones that were easily identifiable to something closer to a web cam.

The ones in DC I've seen are cylindrical, a white tube basically, close to the corner and pointing towards the pedestrian cross walk.

When my son got a fine ($150) the letter sent home showed several pictures in succession (a fraction of a second each) and the text describing that his vehicle failed to appear at the same spot on at least two (or three? I can't remember) of the pictures, which determines it was always in movement.

Coming soon to NY

I can see these cameras all over the metro area soon.. It's a cash cow for the city..

stop sign cameras

Very few folks, in my opinion, run red lights or stop signs. Where the villages/towns/cities are making their money is right turn on red. Everyone knows what you are suppose to do, but come on, if it is safe....it is safe. A real cop at that intersection would not give you a ticket for going 1/2 mph and then turning red. The camera has no judgement, and that is exactly what the villages want to produce their income.

I appologize to Dudlee in advance, but it strikes me that this attitude is symptomatic of the moral decline of our country. If you feel that you do not need to follow traffic laws, then maybe you won't report some income (no one is hurt by it, are they?) or you will pad your expense report (I needed that whatever to be at my best for my presentation, didn't I?) or you will take extended breaks and lunchs (other people do it, don't they?) or you will act on insider information, or...

What about the attitude of governments that are raking in millions of dollars for "catching" people breaking the law? Especially when that law, for all intents and purposes, is to keep cars from colliding into each other.

Stop. What does it mean anymore? It means, slam on the brakes at red light camera intersections. It means "make sure it's full and complete" otherwise, you'll get a lovely notice in the mail. It means our governing bodies have decided to create a new revenue stream by changing laws so we can pay, without the risk of losing our licenses, insurance, or livelihood, just our hard earned money.

If anything, I can see how people would want to start cheating the government. Maybe the government is the reason for this moral decline that you speak of?

As for me...

Few folks running lights or stop signs

Are you kidding me that very few folks are running red lights or stop signs. Where I live I could see that one in five cars by my house DO NOT STOP for the stop sign.

As a school crossing guard by very busy roads, about one in 10-15 cars run red lights. People today don't care, they only think of themselves, it all about ME, and hell with everyone else.

It WOULD Be Nice If Everyone Stopped

shrifty wrote:

I think it would be nice if people actually stopped, and took their turn when appropriate. Most of the driver's I see do not do this.

There are a LOT of people I see in residential areas who barely slow down for stop signs. Someone actually vandalized most of the stop signs by writing "Please!" at the bottoms.

I agree with you. Sometimes I wonder, those who are against controls, a) do they live in a metro area of 19 mil
b) have they ever experienced lawlessness

First of all, every day on my commute to work I witness red light running where there are no cameras. I would say the cameras work, because people stop at red light intersections. People who know the camera is there (the signs kind of announce that fact), stop. So no fines are collected.

Secondly, I was in Asia on business 2 weeks ago, and witnessed complete lawlessness. Now this was a small city of 12 mil. On multiple occasions, I witnessed motorcycles scraping cars and riding away.

Personally, I am for order, having gotten a taste of disorder. Part of me believes there are folks on this forum who actually just want to play the devils advocate. It would be hard to believe that they would want lawlessness, especially if it affected their own families.

California = CA
Canada = CDA

united States of America = USA
American Dollars = $USD
Canadian Dollars = $CAD
.CA = Candian domain
.US = United States domain

Just to confuse everyone, from Wikipedia (so it must be true):

"Each U.S. state, federal territory, and the District of Columbia has a reserved two-letter second-level domain based on the International Organization for Standardization Standard ISO 3166-2:US for the United States.

For example, .ny.us is reserved for websites affiliated with New York and .va.us for those affiliated with Virginia.

However, some state administrations prefer usage of .gov domains or others; e.g., California’s chief website is located at www.ca.gov instead of www.state.ca.us, and Massachusetts' chief website is located at www.mass.gov instead of www.state.ma.us.

Additionally, the territories of the US have their own ccTLDs: .as for American Samoa, .gu for Guam, .mp for Northern Mariana Islands, .pr for Puerto Rico, and .vi for the United States Virgin Islands. These operate alongside or in preference to their .us subdomains (i.e., .as.us, .gu.us, .mp.us, .pr.us, and .vi.us, respectively)."

haha

Lighten your wallet...equals

a tax. This constant government desire to find money, similar to a drug addicts desire to find his/her junk. If you want law enforcement hire cops who by the way can check to see if the person has a license, insurance and whether they have warrants.
I don't argue that in some cases speed cameras, like those in school zones might be worth while but the biggest problem is these are set up for profit, pure and simple. If they don't bring in the revenue they are pulled.

RLC for certain

STOP SIGN CAMERAS

How can they do that? A red light camera can be synchronized to the light itself to start timing when the light turns red. However, with a stop sign there is nothing to change, therefore nothing to trigger the camera. Are they going to use the motion of the vehicle to trigger the camera or use a video camera (which will have to be reviewed by someone after the fact).

How

Nuvi1490T wrote:

A stop sign camera takes a picture at timed intervals. A vehicle must appear in the exact same position for two consecutive pictures.

I was heading home after work (long...10 minute commute!) and didn't stop completely at a sign. When I started to slowly move forward I noticed a police car parked in a nearby lot. Sure enough, he came after me with the lights on. We both stopped very close to a busy intersection with a 4-way STOP sign. As I waited for him to do his thing with my ID and insurance, I counted more than 50 cars crossing the intersection and probably 1 or 2 came to a full STOP before moving forward. I was checking the officer through the rear-view mirror, and he also looked at the intersection every now and then. When he walked back to my car, I joked "Did you check this intersection? I guess you'll have a busy time this evening!" He said he did, and gave me just a warning! My lucky day, I guess!
