3790 lmt Traffic icon

Lets see if we can fix this thing. Some where in Map version 2013.10 I lost the Traffic icon on the Map screen.
When I got home from Vacation I noticed 2013.20 came out. Updated the map, and the traffic subscription. All is there. The unit see’s the traffic cable when plugged in. In the Settings screen the traffic icon is there and all seems ok. It’s enabled and shows lifetime and subscription expiry date. I did reset that but it didn’t help. We went down to Portland for a week, 6 hour drive, still no icon on the map screen. Got back yesterday and decided to wipe the whole Unit. Everything went except the units id and keyboard and languages. I let web updater put it all back. All is back, works fine, but I still have no traffic icon.
Any ideas? sad

Thanks

Remember that old trick?

Go into the diagnostic screen, and reset the subscription.

• Press the Speedo, and hold
• Press Developer Info
• Press GTM FM Table
• Tap the 3 bars at the top, and hit Reset

Take it for a test drive.

3790 traffic

This has happened to me a couple of times but shuting down the unit completely and restarting fixed it.

Must have done that a couple of dozen times.

I wonder if the the FM receiver crapped out?

I haven't been to the lower mainland since last year, so I'm not sure if this applies to mine as well. I've been trying to make it down, but no luck so far.

I don't think so, cause you can see it working in Developer Info or one of the other screens. If you fool around in that screen that comes up after you hit speed, there's a place where its actually showing you what fm channel its on, it changes frequently.

out of curiosity

You do have your unit set so its default region is North America, correct? I know European countries use different channel settings for their FM stations and that could affect what it sees from the receiver.

I'm not sure one could change that. My subscription says North America, plus the fm channels it scans are valid for my area

I have had last 4 map updates on my 3790 w/ no icon problems

The traffic icon has appeared on my map screen and displays all the traffic icons and data whenever I use the traffic power cord plugged into the cradle. I have had no problems at all with traffic displaying properly with the last 4 map versions including 2013.20.

I cannot see why a map upgrade would effect the units software's ability to display the traffic icon.

NA stations are every 100 kHz, the European ones are something like every 90 kHz. If the units region was set to say Germany, it may be looking for traffic data on frequencies the receiver isn't sending. It's just a guess on my part, but it may be something to keep in mind if you have changed the region.

Latest firmware?

I had a similar issue a while back where it would intermittently stop showing for a day. Turned out there was an issue fixed in a firmware upgrade, so that might be worth checking as well.

I would agree, since 2013.20 didn't solve anything, for that matter I was on 2013.10 when this started.
I know it worked before i went on holidays in August. I always do an update before I leave. Poi's and whatever Garmin has. Something changed. At this stage I already know what it isn't, what i need, is someone to tell me what it is laugh out loud

No idea how one would go about doing that. I do not have Euro Maps on here. Looking at "Address" its showing me British Columbia, Canada. It changed this automatically, cause I had it set to Vancouver, Washington last week. But I think I know where your heading. When we first get our Nuvi, we need to tell it what country and language. Don't know how to check that either. It has to be right or I would be having a lot more problems besides this one? The nav subscription says North America.

sounds as if that's not the issue

It sounds as if the region isn't an issue. You are probably more like me, you didn't know about regional differences in the settings so you set it for where you live initially. There is enough information buried in some of these threads about changing the region and how being in different regions enables some functions not found in others.

Changing

To change the region you need to do a hard reset of the device. The Nuvi will ask if you really want to delete all user data and when you say Yes the first setting it offers you is the country you want to use.

There is also a way to clear all user data via the diagnostic screens which results in the same thing happening as the hard reset process.

Remember to backup your favorites as they will all be deleted as part of the reset process.

In any event I don't think the region will make much difference in this case. I have my 3790 set for Australia as it gives me the ability to turn autozoom off, and I like the round speed limit sign better than the NA square display. Anyway, I get traffic data for Vancouver and all through the US, when we travel, with the region set this way.

Another Suggestion

I don't know if this is your problem since you seem quite knowledgeable on your Nuvi's functions.

Did by any chance the settings change and unticked the box for traffic in the "avoidances" menu.
I realize this is a basic thing to check but sometimes we do forget to check the obvious.

I'm not going to enjoy contacting Garmin. They are gonna make me go through everything I've already done.

Update

Sent Garmin e-mail. Told them all that i did, and guess what there reply was?.........Do this do that and then do this. Sent them a reply and asked them if they were for real, and why were they telling me to do what I already have done? Next guy comes on and I'm sure he read my e-mail, cause all he said was, you did everything that can be done already. It's hardware, buy a new traffic receiver.

Downgrade firmware

Have you tried downgrading to an earlier firmware? That's the only thing left that I can think of to try.

Or do you have a backup of it when it was new? If so, you can try restoring back to that data. If all efforts still fail, you can try buying another receiver from a merchant that allows returns. If that receiver works then you'll know it was a hardware issue with your existing unit.

Already did the old backup, as far as the firmware is concerned, that wouldn't change a thing since it stopped working half way through 2013.10 there abouts. The cable does make sense though. 70 bucks...no biggy. GPS firmware on the 3790 is v 2.60.
That has never changed. We have done a couple of software version changes though. Now we are at 4.90.
I'll run with the new cable and see what happens.

Thanks Guys for all the advice.

3790 lmt Traffic icon Update

Thanks for all help guys.
Got the new traffic cable yesterday and tested it this morning. Garmin was right. Busted Cable. New one works like it should. No idea why the old one ceased to work after 1 1/2 years. It never gets touched other than plugging in and out of the Cigarette lighter socket.
Cradle always sits on the Dash. But there you have it.

Same problem here!

You had the exact same problem I have. Tried everything as you did but no Traffic Icon. Reloaded maps, updates, etc... and nothing. I can see FM signals in the GTM table but still nothing.

Contacted Garmin and they quickly said they would replace my GTM 35 cable free of charge (unit is 18 months old now), but I have to send my old one to them first in exchange.

I asked them how could it be the cable if I'm getting the FM signals on the GTM Table, after a reset. They would not respond to this but just told me to replace the cable.

Based on this thread I will do the same. Sounds like it worked. Thanks guys!
