Adding Sound to "Home" on Garmin 660

I kind-of remember a post a couple years ago on how to add a Sound file to HOME, but now that I want to add it, of course I can't find it.... smile!

I want to add a short Audio file to the "Home" flag indicator on my 660....

I know it wants to be an MP3 file, just need to know where to put it, and what to name it!!

Thanks....

Jan

Make a separate GPX or CSV file with your home coordinates.

If your GPS was made in the last couple of years, it has to be a wav file. For my home, I use the 'Auntie Em' wav I found on this site. Just make sure it has the same filename as your home POI file.

Home.gpx
Home.wav

Set the proximity with EPE, then load with POI-Loader.

Read this:

I do it as follows

I created a 1 line csv file with the home coordinates.
I also named it with "Redlight" so I can load in express using poi loader.

The 660 uses mp3 files but I seem to recall that they will also use wav as long as the sox.exe is in the proper location. I haven't used my 650 in a while so I can't recall if I am using wav or mp3.

Home Redlight.csv
Home Redlight.wav
Home Redlight.bmp

OK

Home Redlight.wav
Home Redlight.bmp

Since your GPS has a special designation called Home, I don't know if it will show your BMP or the one Garmin uses. Interesting to see.

You can have both a MP3 and WAV. Sox will ignore the MP3 if it cannot use it.

@David

It shows both the bmp and Garmins home.

Create a 1 line CSV

To create a 1 line CSV file.... Do I take a copy of an existing POI CSV file, rename it home, edit it with excel, deleting all lines but one....
Then, using the info from that one line, enter in my home coordinates as seen by the 660, and then create an MP3 audio file as same name.... ???

If so, I'll try it...

Other questions.... What if I don't include a home bmp file? The 660 will probably use the built in home Icon.... but then trigger on the Home audio POI file, due to proximity, right?

So then I'll have a Home.CSV and Home.mp3, but no bmp, right?

Excel is ok

In 1st column put longitude
2nd column put latitude
In 3rd column I put "My Home" without parenththese (not necessary though).

Save it as a csv file.
Use poi loader and label it as you stated. Since you want an alert you would use manual mode and set a distance. I put the word Redlight in my file name because it will load in auto and give me 1/4 mile alert.

No bmp is needed

Yes

That will work.

Yes. Make sure you load on Manual mode to set the proximity.

I convert my csv files to gpx using EPE, allowing me to imbed a proximity. This way I can use the Express mode to load.

Yes.

Problem with Comma delited file

I did what I said I would do....
Made copy of POI file, changed it to:
home TourGuide
Stole the auntie em Idea (Great, by the way)...

When I loaded it, I get prompted that there is a data error in file.... and data earlier in file will be written...

It appears to be OK.... Is there a way to upload it here for your examination????

I did compare a close by POI location, and I matched the location co-ordinates...
(Which are: -87.8195 42.0985)

This is the only 2 data locations in the file A1 B1
Am I missing something?

Found one problem --- have another!

Found the problem with the file...

You must have something in A3 (I only had data in A1 and A2.... Added "home" in A3, and now it loads fine....

Next problem.... If I go and display home POI... It shows a location about 5 miles from my house....

Going to get co-ordinates again....

Found out why Co-ordinates gave wrong location....

I only know the 660, so I can only state for this one....

When I found my co-ordinates for Home, It used the default h-ddd-mm-ss.s format....
I found out by looking at a POI location near me that I needed to use the h-ddd.ddddd format.....

It seems that if I change format after co-ordinates are asked for, the answer is not accurate... (4.8 miles in my case!)...

To fix... Select the format first, exit... Then go back into co-ordinates.... THEN you'll get the correct co-ordinates... !!!!

Bug? Possibly, but I'll only get bit by this one time, as now the correct setting is selected!!

Example Co-ordinates displayed when changed from Default to correct format: 87.81950 42.09858

The REAL co-ordinates when selected with proper format: 87.72916 42.03646

All is fine now... As TourGuide ....
Thanks

Yeah. Unfortunately a lot of us have done the same thing, but forget to mention it.

I don't use Tourguide. I only want my wav to sound if I am on the street where I live, not just in the area.

Let's do this the easy way

and that will be with EPE.

For small files like what you are wanting, the geocoding capability of EPE can not be beat.

Go to
http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor.)
and download the software - then go back and download the help files.

Start up EPE and you will see 4 panels. At the bottom of the upper left panel, you will see - in purple - "Add New POI".

Click on that button.

In the dialog that opens, put "Home" in the Name field

Put your address into the proper fields.

Move directly over to the right from the "Post Code" field and press the "Geocoding" button.

Now you see a google map with your house indicated.

At the top of the page, click the "Grab" button and your home coordinates will be inserted.

Now, go read a charlesd45 FAQ to get info on how to save the file (or read EPE's help)
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/33782

Others who want to create a Home" POI will find this the easiest way to do it. If you want to add another entry (you said you had two) it is just following the above process one more time.

Good luck and we would appreciate a report.

use http://www.itouchmap.com/latlong.html

Type (or paste the address) and hit enter. Copy the coordinates that pop up above the marker and paste them into your CSV. Remember to reverse the values as Garmin wants Longitude then Latitude rather than the Lat/Lon displayed.
