Simulator speed 10 kph over maximum 60 kph speed limit

Hello. I just purchased a refurbished Nuvi 1490LMT unit and POI Factory's latest Red Light and Speed Alert csv file and I installed it. I tried the simulator mode and I noticed the little car icon was traveling at 70 kph and I know that this Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada main avenue's speed limit is 60 kph. What gives with the simulated speed of 70 kph?

Thank you.

Only a simulation

The car knows it is in a simulation and cannot receive a speeding ticket, so it is taking advantage.

I sure miss TomTom's option

I sure miss TomTom's option of increasing the simulator's speed by 2x or 4x.

To the best of my knowledge the Nuvi will only run a simulation at, or below, the speed limit it has assigned to the road being used in the simulation. If your seeing a simulation running at higher than the known speed limit then the map data has been coded with an incorrect speed .

If you are simulating driving on a road with no speed limit, it can speed significantly.

Thank you for the prompt

Thank you for the prompt replies so far! I just read past threads/posts that said there are currently no Garmin assigned speed limit icons for Canada. If the simulator has 70 kph for Portage Avenue (Winnipeg's most famous avenue), does that mean when the time comes for Canadian map assignment of speed limits for avenues, streets, boulevards, etc., the simulator will recognize the 60 kph assigned for this avenue?

On the POI Factory's Red Light and Speed Alert csv files, are there any other features that were included other than red light alerts and speed alerts for school areas and streets and avenues? I noticed when I was driving that the voice doesn't say "School area ahead", just a pop up icon that says "Speed Alert 37.6 kph". Maybe Miss POI can revise this csv file to put in a 60 kph maximum speed alert for Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada because I tested driving over 60 kph and no maximum speed pop up icon appeared.

Do you

Do you have the most current maps on your Nuvi (version 2013.10)? If so then you should find that speed limit data is now very up to date for Canada. I know that here in BC, any numbered highway I've driven on now as speed limit data to display. This includes city streets that are also part of a numbered highway.

I've found that currently there does not appear to be any speed limit data for city streets or most other roads that are not numbered highways but this will probably change over time as it did with US map data in past years.

Very puzzling

That's what's so puzzling about Portage Avenue which is also TransCanada Highway No. 1 outside Winnipeg. I did update to the 2013 Map Version yet Portage Avenue doesn't show 60 kph maximum speed limit on the Garmin screen.

Simulation mode on 1490

Nearly all our highways show the speed limit. Occasionally the simulated speed exceeds the limit shown, but only briefly. Amusing to watch.

It's because

It's because the map data does not contain any speed limit information until you cross the Perimeter Highway, driving from downtown Winnipeg west toward Brandon. Going east from downtown toward Kenora, ON, the speed limit display again appears as you cross the Perimeter Highway. Even though the streets within the city of Winnipeg may be numbered highways, they don't appear to have speed limit information attached to them. Obviously the speed limit information for Canada is more detailed in my area of BC than it is in Manitoba.

Maybe the maps will contain more MB speed data in the next map update. I know we saw a huge increase in speed limit information between map version 2012.40 and 2013.10.

Hummm

The ETA (estimated time arrival) reflects your overall driving average meaning that if you normally go 10 mph over the speed limit it will take that into account when estimating the route or destination your entering.

Now I'm wondering if it's behaving the same way when in the simulation mode rolleyes

You would have to do a hard reset and then redo the same simulation route to see if the speed & ETA is the same or different.

Once again, thank you for

Once again, thank you for all your responses so far.

Just one more thing. Since Portage Avenue which is TransCanada Highway No. 1 within the City of Winnipeg has a 60 kph maximum speed limit, could I ask Miss POI to produce a Speed Limit Alert for Portage Avenue between the West Perimeter Highway and the East Perimeter Highway on POI Factory's Red Light and Speed Alert csv file for the next update?

Speed alerts are proximity alerts

Using a Garmin, it is not possible to produce a speed alert along a road. The speed alerts in the POI Factory speed camera file are for specific locations and there is a proximity alert as you approach a location that your speed is too high.

Multiple locations along the road could be selected and made into a file that could be loaded as a speed file but these would not be included in the POI Factory speed camera file since there are no cameras there. This would be something for your own use.

Simulation test

I have a Garmin 255W and using the latest maps (2013.10).
I did a simulation test from my home point a till point b. which is a via on the Trans-Canada Highway.

My street does not show the speed limit on my unit and the actual speed limit is 50 km/h. In the simulation mode the speed went up to 87 km/h shock

On the side road that leads to the highway the speel limit is 70 km/h and the unit went up to 92 km/h. It should also be noted that it never slowed down nor stopped for the stop signs along it's way.

On the Tran-Canada highway the unit showed on the screen the speed limit of 100 km/h and I was moving at 103km/h.

I did this for about 5 minutes on the highway and the simulator would sometimes decrease to 48 km/h for no reason and then go back up to 103 km/h.

So there you have it, the speed your unit is showing in the simulation mode isn't as far as I'm concerned accurate at all.

Cheers smile
