Just In case the Nuvi Smartphone Link Stops Working

I have a Nuvi 3490 and use the Smartphone Link application and like it a lot. On our recent scooter trip to Ohio, the GPS stopped receiving any data. The weather app would just endlessly say, "updating". The traffic would never update either. I checked and rechecked all the settings. I reinstalled the Smartphone Link application on my Droid. (I think I'm going to get charged again for the weather app). Still nothing. I was bummed out.
When I returned I continued to play around with the settings. I have an app called, "App 2 SD Free" and under the Smartphone Link, I found a button to "clear data". After that the data has flowed without any problems. Something so simple, but it was very frustrating.
If Smartphone link behaves in this way for you, try this technique. The "App 2 SD Free" is a handy program anyway.
If this can save anyone frustration, then my pain is your gain.

I use it to move progs to the SD area of my Nexus S, and clear data on the device. I don't use a smartlink nuvi, either.
It was one of my first apps for Android. I recommend it.

App Not Required
Android Settings can also be used to clear the data for Smartphone Link. Worked for me when the Weather app was not functioning:
Settings -> Apps ->Smartphone Link -> Clear data
EDIT:
@Juggernaut, this also works on my Nexus S:
Settings -> Apps ->Smartphone Link -> Move to USB storage

Task manager
In Android to restart an app, you can use the task manager to end the app and restart it. Usually that will fix most problems.

That has not been my experience with Smartphone Link problems I've encountered. As kcgpsfan stated earlier, application data needs to be cleared.
