3790 LMT Map Refresh Rate

I just got a refurbished 3790LMT from Bestbuy at a great price. So far I am loving it! The screen clarity is awesome and the feature set is pretty comprehensive. With the life time map update this is going to be used for a long time.

In spite of all the great features of the 9370, I do have one thing that is annoying me. The refresh rate of the map, in 3D, is not as smooth as it should be when new map sections are added. It seems like the CPU is having trouble keeping up with the processing demand.

For the owners of the 9370, is this normal? Are there features I can turn off that'll help with the refresh rate?

Thanks

I like track up

I got a refurb 3790LMT from WalMart about a month ago. I have nearly always run it track up, and generally the display update rate has been quite good. In particular it has been faster, finer grained, and smoother than on my 855, which never bothered me much.

I don't understand your comment "when new map sections are added" which might help me look for the effect you describe on mine (both in track up and 3D). Could you describe it a bit more?

On a completely different 3790LMT point, how can one tell when the traffic receiver is working, has detected concerning traffic, or has actually changed a route because of traffic?

Admittedly Albuquerque is not a place with a lot of freeway serious slowdowns, but in running this thing for maybe twenty hours so far, I've seen no advertisements, nor any other hint I recognized that traffic was active save for the little red LED on the 12V cord.

As far as I can see, if your Traffic Receiver is the GTM-35*, there is no Traffic Coverage for the entire state of New Mexico:

http://www8.garmin.com/traffic/

http://www.navteq.com/rdstraffic/

Your nearest Traffic coverage may be Phoenix, Tucson, Denver or El Paso and these won't be active until you're near enough to these areas to get FM radio coverage for the Traffic Coverage to kick in.

*I believe that your nuvi uses the GTM-35 and only receives 3D Traffic. Albuquerque does not offer 3D Traffic or Digital 3D Traffic but it is available for the devices that use nuLink! that can receive 3D Live Traffic (maybe only the older Garmin Live 1695 GPS).

If you

If you are receiving traffic data there will be an icon displayed on the map screen just below the traffic arrows, in the top left side of the screen. The icon will be round and have a couple of vehicles in it. The background color of the icon will be green, yellow or red depending on the traffic conditions being received.

If your in an area that isn't covered by Navteq traffic then the icon will not appear on the screen until you drive into an area that is receiving traffic data.

You will only see ads on the map screen if your vehicle is stopped and they will disappear once you are moving. I'm not sure if you'll get any ads until you are receiving traffic data.

Also, I don't think just receiving traffic data will not change your route. I believe you'd need to the the Traffic avoidance set and/or possibly press the "detour" icon on the main menu screen.

Yes, there are.

First, if you've downloaded the latest maps, do a hard reset. It helps a lot.

Other things are:
• turn off My Trends
• turn off Eco Route

Hope that helps.

Yes, it is. I got me a new unit from Amazon a few months ago and it exhibits the same behavior when zooms out very quickly. I've read if you select different country as your locale after hard reset, for example Australia, there is option to turn on/off auto zoom. That would definitely help, but you'd lose auto zoom feature and apparently some other features would change.

Re-routing with traffic

I read that if the color is red, then it will auto reroute. If its yellow, then you'll need to manually reroute.

I don't see where you can change the settings for auto rerouting. I am not too sure I am keen on the idea that the GPS will reroute automatically on "red" without my intervention.

When the color is yellow and you want to avoid the congestion on your route, you'll need to manually reroute. You can do this by tapping in the traffic circle when it is yellow. Then go to the 3rd icon on the right, labeled as "traffic on route" (I think). Select the route that is yellow, click on the square (with the 3 horizontal bars) in the top left hand corner then select "avoid" from the pull down menu. This will create a new route to avoid the congestion.

UPDATE: After the the traffic button is pressed when it is yellow, there is a 4th icon labeled as "Alternate Route". When this is pressed it shows the current route with suggested alternate route with total time for each route. I didn't see this feature act this way before, but this was only my 2nd encounter with traffic.

Thanks for the icon understanding

Just the answer I needed, thanks.

As to the question of Albuquerque coverage, the message of the displays at traffic.com is ambiguous, perhaps. While Albuquerque is not listed as a city, if one selects Denver, zooms out, drags to move down to Albuquerque, and zooms in, one sees color coding, which appears to be active and to change. Just as I type (on Sunday morning, July 1, at 6:37 MDT) there is a brief red section on I-40 from a little before 12th NW to a little past Rio Grande Bvld NW. On the other hand, Google Maps traffic does not currently display trouble there, though it does list a lane closure a little further west on the bridge over the river.
