Custom POI Icons on Garmin Nuvi 2460LMT not appearing unless zoomed in very close

I recently began loading custom POI icons from POI Factory for popular POIs like Walmart, McDonalds, etc. However, I was disappointed when I found that these icons do not appear on the map when you are driving. They only appear when you zoom in fairly close and at that point, you are probably so close to the intersection you could see the sign for the Walmart in real life! Even when the Garmin zooms in a little automatically when you slow down and approach an intersection, I still do not see the icons. They only appear when I manually zoom in fairly close. They then take a moment to render on the display. This is a fairly robust unit with many features but this seems to be a shortcoming. Is this how the Garmin Nuvi is designed to work with POI icons? I can understand them not appearing when you are on the highway as dozens could clutter the screen but when you are driving around town, I do think they should appear. Is there a trick to this? Does anyone else have this issue?

old topic

This has been discussed many times and there have been various work-arounds posted in the many different threads on this exact same subject. One of the easiest ways to get an icon to display without zooming in is to set an alert for the POI. One of our 18 Wheelers active on the forums stated he uses a 1 foot distance, It's enough to cause the icon to display without triggering the alert.

Oh. Well I had searched the forums for the topic and it came up with over 800 hits and yet I didn't see anything specific to this issue. If anyone can send me links to other forums on this issue, I'd really really appreciate it!

Interesting. So with a 1

Interesting. So with a 1 ft. alert, it will show up on the map even if I'm more than 1 ft. away (which would literally be right on top of the exact POI). Seems a little counterintuitive to me. Also, you can do load the POIs with a 1 ft. alert but not have it pop up on the screen with an alert? I thought if you configure the distance alert, it beeps at you as you approach the POI X feet away??

Does not beep

I do not know this but I suspect that there is some minimum "proximity" distance below which POI Loader (or perhaps the unit itself) will not alert with a "bong" or a sound file.

However, when I did a test of this concept to see if it worked - and it does - I found that I STILL have to be zoomed in to 200 ft (on my 765T) in order to see the icons.

I'm sorry, but I am not able to conceive of how this would help me because it requires that I take my eyes off the road to see what new icons have appeared. They are still 24x24 pixel and too small to quickly take in with a quick glance like the oval that appears with "TourGuide" proximity alerts.

I really just want the POI icons to show up

For me, I'm not looking for a bong or a beep for every Subway, Walmart, or BP gas station I am near. However, it would be nice to just get the icons to display on the 2460LMT properly while driving or at least without having to zoom in super close at which point it's useless anyway. If you are in a town, it would be nice to be able to zoom out and see what places are in that town by viewing the map instead of jumping between various categories. Also, sometimes the map view is helpful because it will show exactly where something is. I could be within 1/4 mile of a McDonalds as the crow flies, but if the next exit on the interstate exit isn't for 5 miles, it doesn't help me much!

nobody makes one that does this

As the song goes, "I'm dreamin'. I'm always dreamin'."
