Can you see the .gpx extension in Windows Explorer or are you saying that it is a .gpx file because that is what you just downloaded?

If you can not see the extension, then follow the instructions in http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30393

I use Extra POI Editor

I use Extra POI Editor. If you do a search on this site you will find the threads with the link to download it. It is free and maintained by a site member and will open, create, modify and save all of the POI types.

Why are you trying to open it?

It's really just a...

text file. You can open them in Microsoft Word, Notepad, or any other text editor.

Better to use POI Editor to manipulate anything, though.
