Help with POI files

Hello. I am a complete Nubie but have read as many of the FAQs that I can. Bought a Nuvi 50 and was able to set it up and d/l maps and updates.

Downloaded several .gpx and .csv POI files then got POI Loader and downloaded to a 2Gig SD in the unit.

Now What???

I see where all the POI files are now one .gp1 file and don't know where to go from here! I can't find how to check these or if there is anything more I need to do?

I've seen prior reference to .bmp files (for icons) and .wav files for sound, but didn't have those to download.

Can a kind soul point me in the right direction to see if this is working? I did select the POI on the screen and all I saw was categories.

Thank you,

Al

.

On the GPS unit, go to Where to? and then press Extras (you might need to use the down arrow to see Extras) and then press Custom POIs.

Not that the Custom POIs that you load with Garmin's POI Loader software do not show up with the built in Points of Interest but rather show up in their own section as noted above.

Usually,

POI files are downloaded to a folder on your PC, say, "MyPOIs". If you want certain POI files to show up as a "category" under "Custom POIs", then you would create sub-folders under MyPOIs, say, Restaurants, Restareas, AutoRepair.

You run POI Loader and point POI Loader to the folder MyPOIs and it will load to your GPS unit all the files in MyPOIs and one level of sub-folders.

As MM directed, these POIs show up under Where To? > [down arrow] > Extras.

You seem to indicate that you loaded the POI files to your SD card. I have never done that so I do not know whether they need to be in a specially named folder on the SD card. But - I suggest you load POI files directly to your nuvi until you get more comfortable with what works and what does not. Then more people will be able to assist you.

Before you get too far, please make a backup of your nuvi.

Even on a SD card

You still go to where to/extras/custom poi's. Select a poi and then "go". Depending on the model (don't know if they have corrected it yet), you will get a question about new data found. If you answer yes the nuvi will put the poi's on the nuvi. If "no", they will stay on the card. Unfortunately you may be asked that question everytime. No way around it.
Once you have those working, you can then branch out and add sound and bmp's.

Some models offer a 'skip' option here

After you say yes, you can skip the installation onto the Nuvi itself. Does that on my 500.

Custom POIs

Thank you for the speedy reply. It looks like I did it right and yes, all the 5 POI files were there. All I had to do was select all and it seems to be seen.

Appreciate you input.
