Garmin power

My first GPS was a Street Pilot C330 and the car power cord attached to the mount.

When it fell off the windshield one too many times and didn't come back to life, I hurried out and bought my current Nuvi 1390. Its power cord plugs into the mini-USB jack.

I just helped a friend learn the basics of her 2350 and I see that it's powered (once again) through the mount.

Has Garmin gone back to powering the unit by snapping it into the mount, or do some of the new generation of Nuvis still require a separate power cord? I sure like the convenience of snapping the GPS into the mount without having to fumble around for a separate power connection.

(Unfortunately Garmin's model comparisons don't include this info.)

I think charging depends on

I think charging depends on which models, not old or new models.

Before I had 255W, it was charging direct to the unit. Loved it, because I never used the mount. I used the velcro. Now I got the 2450LM and it is charging through the mount. Hate it. Didn't know when I bought it. I still use the velcro but the unit has small thing (plug-in) attached behind makes it so thick.

Don't know why Garmin does that to some units.

Powered mount

As far as I know:

The high-end 3xxx series have a powered mount.

The latest 2xx5 series don't have a powered mount.

The previous 23xx/24xx series came with a powered mount.

The older 1xxx series did not come with a powered mount.

One way to check this is to search for an unboxing video on YouTube of the unit you're interested in.

750

My 750 has the bean-bag thing to keep the nuvi on the dashboard. I never liked the suction cup to the windshield method. Snap the 750 onto the bean bag mount and it gets power and stays on the dash.

Powered Mount

Garmin should really state this in their description so a person knows what their getting. I for one prefer the power mount since I use a bean bag.

Actually if you dig a bit you will know what units do and do not have a power mount.

On the Garmin site type in the model #, then when it appears click on the accessory tab, then mounts, if a unit has a power mount a replacement part will show powered mount, if no power mount only a vehicle suction mount will be available.

Great idea!

I never thought of checking the accessories.

Actually, that first Street Pilot came with both the windshield suction cup and the bean bag. I guess the ease of moving the unit between vehicles is what sold me on the powered mount.
