coworker had speed cam ticket in hand

My conclusion is that I did not get one in DC (I've lost track of how many weeks it's been). Now we'll never know what their threshold is, I was doing 6 over and that's what I found online supposedly triggers the cam. MD is 11, and they publically state it.

Coworker showed us his ticket in MD for doing 46 in a 30. Fine was a mere $40. When I looked at the pics, there is no way, no how he could dispute it.

He couldn't have cared less, he said as long as there were no points, doesn't phase him and he paid it immediately.

Sometimes I really wonder if we're too into it on the forum. Maybe we should relax and be more easygoing like my coworker. smile

Camera Tickets and Points on License

I think I understand your position, but I see a couple of conflicting issues with the idea that we should not care about camera tickets.

From the camera-hater position, "just pay the ticket" reinforces the belief that speed cameras are a cash cow. From a public safety perspective, viewing camera tickets as an additional cost of driving has no deterrent effect.

So the best response to both positions is to be more selective in the use of cameras by traffic authorities, and impose demit points when a ticket is issued.

Obviously more people would dispute tickets with demirits. To control costs for handling such challenges, the authority would have to ensure the validity of the tickets by increasing the tolerance for triggering a snapshot and using multiple angles to clearly identify the vehicle and driver. This would actually reduce the likelihood of speed traps and cameras being set up simply to bring in revenue. With more judicious use of cameras and demerits upon conviction, there would be a strong deterrent effect.

So you would have fewer cameras, and their primary function would be to improve traffice safety.

Speed Cameras

Why just go after us drivers? Why not the jay walkers. They have face recognition software. What's next?

guilty as charged

Asked my coworker how fast he was going, he said around 50. So they clocked him at 46. Now why would he want to claim he was not speeding, when the limit is 30? I'm just saying his attitude is he got caught, he paid the fine, and he moves on. Laid back. Maybe if it were $150 like it would have been in DC, he would have cared more. The point is, never did he try to deny he didn't do it. That's part of being an adult. Look at John Edwards, he's actually willing to go to court to try to get out of something he allegedly did. That's the other way of handling things, where as long as you can beat the system, you will. Technology reigns it in. And in Calif., they do go after jaywalkers, as in Toronto.

Money Making Program

It sounds more like a money making program than a public safety program. The Maryland stretch of I-95 to North Baltimore is constantly loaded with mobile camera vehicles parked behind Jersey walls. Be careful!

Thanks for the tip. I will be driving to Maryland next month... or maybe I'll think twice about coming...

You've got an 11 mph leeway--that's 66 mph. Just drive 65. If you don't, then wth, it's only $40.

The heck with paying

For out of state people, it's an effete parking ticket, recycle it with the junk mail. What's MD going to do, send an officer to IL to bust me? Ding my perfect credit rating? Call me nasty names?

surprise!

YES, they have reciprocity laws.
I rcvd a ticket in IL way back when. I live in NC.
Rcvd notice from NC that my license was being revoked because of the outstanding ticket.

AH, technology.................

speeding ticket out of state

I got a ticket in FL. live in IN. got the same notice from Indiana about licence being revoked.

wow

Here it is 2012 (there are computers and they are connected by copper wire and fiber optics), and someone said to recycle the speed cam tickets with the junk mail if you're out of state. What lousy advice, but at least it's free. smile
