CSV files

I have a Garmin Nuvi 3490 LMT and am interested in some of the CSV files on this site but I don't know what to do with them. I downloaded them to my computer but can't open them except for in my notepad. Is it possible to put these files onto our Garmin or is that what they are for. We are new to the Garmin scene and how to put new maps etc. from our computer to our Garmin without screwing things up.

POI Loader is what you use

POI Loader is what you use to put POIs on your Garmin. Get it at http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99...

Also, do take the time to read through the FAQs we have on the site. A lot of questions you have may be answered that way.

Welcome aboard.

Getting Started

Hi Dianne, your best option is to check out the link below, it will explain how to install Custom POIs onto your GPS. Welcome to the site!

Welcome Dianne

Welcome to the site.

Since you are new, you may want to do a couple of the Beginner Exercises even before you follow the links given above by Strephon_Alkhalikoi and shrifty.

To make doing these Exercises easy, when you click on the first link below, hold down the "Ctrl" key as you left-click (call this the "Ctrl - left click" key combination). That will open a new "Tab" in your browser in the "Tab" bar. Click on that 'Tab" to do the first exercise - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

The first link makes sure settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.

This next link helps you get a backup by attaching your GPS to your computer. (It is our advice to NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup)

Once you have done these two exercises, then scroll up to Strephon_Alkhalikoi's post (if you have not already done so) and "Ctrl - left click" to get POI Loader for downloading.

Use the same "Ctrl - left click" key conbination after you have scrolled back to shrifty's post for the link to Loading POI files.

Once you have successfully used POI Loader, safely disconnect your 3490 from your computer and fire it up. Chose Where To? > Extras and then "Custom POIs". You will likely see "All Categories", so press that and then you should get some POI locations shown.
