Speed and Red Light Cameras POI's

For over four years I've been downloading the Rest Areas, Red Light Cameras, and Speed Cameras POI's without a problem. Today, the download site for the Red Light and Speed cameras POI's is asking for a membership fee ($5/month or $20/year). Is this new at the Factory or am I missing something? Like I said, I've been a contributing member for over four years.

You have no active member status.

You must be an active member.

There are two ways to achieve this by posting

To maintain active status, you need to have posts in 3 of the last 5 weeks.

For general maintainer status (same benefits), you need to have posts in 9 of the last 26 weeks.

Check your membership status on your account page

Looking at your list of posts, you appear to have sufficient posts to be an active member. confused

Sign in and go to "My Account" page to see what it says there about your membership status.

Has this website even been around for 4 years? When did POIs come about? Newbie here.

This site has been active since 2006

Poi's have been around for quite a while. The built in ones in the GPS for as long as there have been GPS's. As for the custom poi's, I would say 5+ years because this site seems to be the most active and have the best custom poi's.

Over 5 I believe

First, DBright, welcome to the site.

Since you are new, you may want to do a couple of the Beginner Exercises.

To make it easy, when you click on the first link below, hold down the "Cntl" key as you left-click. That will open a new "Tab" in your browser in the "Tab" bar. Click on that 'Tab" to do the first exercise - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

The first link makes sure settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.

This next link helps you get a backup by attaching your GPS to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup)

Now - to answer your questions, I think this site is over 5 years old. I seem to recall one of the members pointing out that another member had been one for 5 years.

POI files come about all the time. Members of this site create them and upload them to the site for other members to use. Hopefully regular updating of POIs occurs as new businesses are opened and others are closed. Often another member will point out discrepancies and they are promptly fixed.

Note that you unit has a lot of 'built-in" POIs. No one has been able to determine what factors are at work in the ones that Garmin provides. One thing we do know is that they are not complete or totally accurate - still worthwhile, mind you, but not as complete for a particular business - say CrackerBarrel - as you will get from this site. My home town Subaru dealer was not in my built-in POIs for instance.

Today

I just saw a notice.

Since 2006

This is what it says at the top, on the very first page.

"Welcome to POI Factory
Since 2006, this is where GPS users get together to share locations and discussions with other GPS users.
