Need Suggestions New Garmin GPS

I have a Garmin 2460 LMT. In April my daughter starts driving and I am going to give her this unit. I wish to purchase a new unit that has the LMT feature but with a screen at least as large as the 2460. I have looked at the Garmin web site but wanted the experienced users on this forum to advise if the Garmin 3590 LMT is indeed the correct choice. I have become used to the Garmin but would be open to another unit if that GPS was noticeably "better". Thank you for any help that you may be able to offer.

internal memory

buy one that has lots of internal memory - 8GB.

It will make future map updates easier.

3590

It looks like a good choice. The powered mount is a feature I need. I have that on my small 295w and I love it. Birds-Eye Junction views and next exit info should make it a winner.

in your shoes

I currently own a 2460LMT and if I was facing the same dilemma I would get another 2460LMT, you can search high and low and will not find a detrimental comment about this unit.

bad experience with 2460lmt

My 2460LMT froze the first time on a trip out of town, three weeks after we bought the 2460 LMT. It would not turn on while pushing the on-off switch. I had four addresses programmed on the GPS that I could not access. Luckily, I had the addresses on paper too and had a paper city map as backup.

Once home the next day, I went to the Garmin FAQ site. They are aware of this situation because they have the answer, what to do with the 1xxx, 2xxx and 3xxx if it freezes while it’s off or while it’s on.

Afterwards on other occasions, it would freeze while driving on the road. I only had to go to the first exit, stop the car, hold the on-off switch for 30 seconds and the GPS would restart. But when you have a brand new product for a month, you don’t expect this to happen.

That is why it went back for a refund. But before the refund, it is funny, when you talk with a service desk or the salesman in the store, they always tell you it is the first time they hear about this.

I would not buy a 2460LMT.
Maybe the 2595 LMT would be more reliable??? Still searching.

outside of the software

outside of the software update issue on my 2350LMT, I love the unit. Battery seems nice, exact same unit as the 2600 series, except the smaller screen..also means smaller price tag..

GARMIN nuvi2350LMT...

I have the new Nuvi 50lm and

I have the new Nuvi 50lm and don't have any issues or complaints. The udate is straight forward and easy to maintain. I also have a micro 4 gb sd card where I load all my custom poi files, including the ones I create useing google earth cord. I have alot of poi files and it uses very little space on the card. It works great and is on spot accuracy. Not a expensive unit if you find it on sale.

A humble suggestion

Dear Triple-Ott658,

The following suggestion is based on my own experience.
Consider holding back on giving your daughter Any GPS while she is learning to drive.
There are many, many multi-tasking things she will be learning as a new driver. Judging speed, stopping distances, traffic signs and signals, anticipating what others might do, and on and on.

After so many years, we take this for granted. But its a lot to take in for a brand-new driver.
Adding the temptation to look at a GPS display is one distraction you can eliminate for a little while.
And maybe ask to hold her phone for her when she's in the left seat, too.

Just my .02.

New GPS

I think one of the better "newer" Garmin units available is the 3790.

Thank you very much for your observation. You have given me something to think about. If I allow her to have it at all it may be with some very strict guidelines such as it will be off unless she absolutely needs it to find her way to some place or to find her way home. A very good suggestion!!!!

same question, same answer

This is a similar question from 2008 and the answer we gave back then.
