garmin tracks (how to save and load with nuvi 265wt?)

does anyone here know of a way to save and load tracks (bread crumbs )with the nuvi 265wt?

every gps I have will let me save my tracks to the SD card except this GARMIN nuvi 265wt or i can not figure out how to save the tracks.
i bought this due to price and screen size and am real pleased it has a much larger internal memory than the others.
I found my way to my sons 633 miles away with directions from Google maps. I found my way home due to the tracks to my sons house were still there. this garmin has a mind of it's own and more than once it tried to run me in circles. my other GPS would at times do the same thing but being able to save my tracks (bread crumbs) enabled me to see how i went before. all my gps units do this but as memory gets full it starts over writing.
by saveing and loading from sd card i am able to build my own map.
any suggestions who be greatly appreciated.

No Routes

Unfortunately the 265WT does not support ROUTEs. So all you can do is save your tracks via Mapsource or Basecamp and make sure you load it back from the program prior to a trip.

This will let you turn the Trip Log blue line on to follow it but you can't navigate it as a route.

no routes

thanks for the reply bear007. following the blue line on the way back worked good. unfortunately i know the blue line will over write it self.
i found this "BaseCamp™
Free Trip-planning Software"
are you saying i can recreate my route with basecamp. then load somehow on the sd card and will have my blue lines when needed to go back to where ever?

A work around

Save your track in BaseCamp. Then save a few waypoints along the track. Transfer the points to your Favorites. On your next trip you can navigate to each one sequentially as you go. I have done this, naming each point as A1 A2 A3 etc.
Even though my units support routes, I still do it this way, just to make sure.

In Mapsource they are called Tracks. As you said, they will eventually be overwritten. I suggest using Mapsource to TRANSFER the Track you are talking about to your PC and then before each trip TRANSFER the saved Track back to the 265WT. I haven't done it myself but I am thinking that will keep putting the track blue line on the screen for a while longer again for you to follow.

Its worth a try!

Or as SpokyBob said, grab a few key waypoints along the way and navigate back 1 waypoint at a time. When you don't have routes that is all you can do.

Just an FYI ... On units that do have routes you can select any given trip log and convert it into a permanent route.

track import

I don't think there is a way to import a saved track on a nuvi. Some nuvi's have a route import function, so on those models, you could try to convert a track log to a route, then import the route. But the nuvi 265W does not have route import, so I don't think your suggestion will work.

Blue Line

I'll have to play around and see if it can be sent back to the GPS just for the blue line.

.

The nuvi can't do that.

I was wrong

I was tinkering with a few different ways of putting the tracks back in but it looks like I was wrong. It looks like you have to make a couple breadcrumb waypoints like Spokybob said above.

@yalaharoy,
Sorry about getting your hopes up.

thanks for all the replys

without a save and load screen on this Garmin i was afraid there would be no way to save my tracks or build a route. what a shame. Garmin used to be a good product but twice the little car showed i still had a ways before my turn and i had to turn around and go back. i had printed my route from google maps and was able to get there and back by the route i wanted.

hahaha--telling the gps it was stupid when it tried to get me to go the wrong way kept me awake so i guess it's not all bad.

anyway thank you everyone for your replys

spokybob

i notice you say your unit supports routes. could you tell me which unit that is and will it let save your tracks to the SD card then automatically show them when you get in that area?

thanks

@Yala

.
...In answer to your question. I just now copied the GPX folder from my 1490 to the SD card. The GPX folder contains a file called CURRENT. CURRENT is the track logs. I disconnected the Nuvi, then deleted the tracks on it. When I re-insert the card, the Nuvi does not recognize the GPX folder on the card.
..Motorcycle Mama is right again, (as always). smile
I use routes from Mapsource on my 1490 occasionally. But my unit does a poor job in routing, because I prefer a scenic route that is neither the fastest nor the shortest. I believe the method explained in my previous post is the best way to re-create your previous trip.

thanks

perhaps the lowrance is the only one capable of storing to the sd card. i broke glass on mine and they want 200 to repair. i will assume none of the garmins will let me save tracks. my guess is lowrance does to help navigate water ways.

i will experiment with your suggestion as that should work.

thanks again for the help

@yalaharoy,
Many many Garmin units do support Routes. With these unites you can make tracks into permanent routes. It just happens that the 265WT doesn't.

I did think I was going to find a way to fool the tracks into showing again. I even changed the date on every line in the file and the date in the track file name. It merged right to the top of the list in the Current.GPX file when viewing it in Mapsource but, The Garmin beat me this time.

tracks into permanent routes

thanks bear for the help.
do you know the garmins that will let you save your tracks to routes. this nuvi 265wt was on sale and i love the size of the screen and ability to see it in bright sunlight but did not realize it wouldn't let you save tracks.
i use my gps more for fishing and hiking than driving. i made my own AA battery pack to keep it charged and both the gps and battery pack fit in my shirt pocket.

being able to save tracks is a big plus and i know the lowrance xog will do it all but they discontinued the xog and i broke the glass on mine.

if i can find a garmin that does it all and i can afford i will buy it.

Route

I tried to see if I could provide you a link to just units with routes but Garmin list it as 1 of the features to search by. With the link below you can select individual units to view and then click the Specs page for each. Under Maps and Memory category you will find the number of routes the unit will store. If you select multiple units to compare they will show the Specs page for all the selected units at one time.

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=401

For the last few years it looks like just the lowest class doesn't support routes, most of the rest do. So maybe you can select units by the price your willing to pay and click compare.

On the link select AUTOMOTIVE under the On the Road Category to see all current models. Or go to the top of the page and select categories to see many many choices.

Magellan Explorist

The handheld Magellan units were designed for saving the tracks and later displaying them. No need to create a route on those. I used that feature only once though.

i don't think garmin

I don't know of any Garmin that will allow you to convert tracks to routes - at least in the automotive units. There used to be some utilities available on the web that would convert them, but the last search I did was so cluttered with posts asking about doing what you wanted I didn't spot any software links glancing through. The suggestion of loading the tracks to the computer and displaying them using Base Camp or Mapsource are probably the two best options right now. You can use the waypoint tool to insert waypoints onto the track and then save those for later use.

Routes

With the Garmin Automotive units you have to do as BoxCar said and use the PC to make them routes and load them back.

I have a Zumo 665 which is a motorcycle/car unit. It will create a route from tracks right on the unit. It also allows you to TracBack on your last track.

I don't know about the units in the other categories like On the Trail. I know some of them support routes.

you can save your tracks

i found this tutorial:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/b7mfd8rkabwzdd9/Garmin%20Map%2...

it took some time and a lot of reading but i now have all my tracks on a SD card that my garmin will read and over lay on the map that came with the unit.

i did NOT delete anything from my garmin. these directions show you can delete files to free space but it was not necessary and i did NOT want to chance losing anything.

the ocala national forest has miles and miles of roads and it is very easy to find yourself going in circles. i have through the years saved my tracks so i always know where i am and how to get out.
