Police ticketing fewer drivers

This was in the Chicago Tribune today.

While I was reading it, I couldn't help but think that the reason police are writing fewer tickets, is because of the explosion of ATEs in the Chicagoland area.

"But no chiefs or officers contacted by the Tribune said they believed traffic stops were down because of another law enforcement trend: red-light cameras. Those in cities with the cameras said they believed the trends were unrelated."

It's interesting to note, ATEs became legal in Chicagoland in 2006, and the graphs provided go back to 2006 (found on page 2 under "Illinois Traffic Ticket Statistics").

I would be more inclined to believe the two were unrelated if this was a national trend, not just a trend in Illinois. It is refreshing to hear that officers are more sympathetic, and not being so harsh with motorists (and having statistics to back that up).
