Android ICS

Anyone get the new upgrade to ICS yet? Haven't seen the upgrade in my Sys Updates yet on my Nexus S.

Yes, I know it was released 2 days ago, and the roll out will be a month. smile Just wondering who has received it.

If your phone is rooted, I'm

If your phone is rooted, I'm sure you can find it. I have a TBolt on Verizon, and am running a ROM, part of which is built with ICS code.

.

That's not what I was asking. I was inquiring about the official 4.0.3 push from Google.

Verizon

Stopped by Verizon service center... at least for them, official push (on some devices) won't happen before the New Year. sad

Like you, we are excited to see that Google released the source code to Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS)! We’d like to address the question many of you have now – when can I get my ICS? There are many steps and processes that go into Ice Cream Sandwich in a way that works for the carrier and for you. Once source code is released from Google, it doesn’t automatically update to your device.

Each new version of Android launches with one device partner, in what is called the “Google Experience Device” or GED, the showcase device for a new Android release. The GED partner for each launch works with Google during the development of the OS so that the device and.......

List of Devices Getting Official Ice Cream Sandwich Update

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is the latest update to the popular mobile OS from Google that originally featured with the Galaxy Nexus but is now being under active porting effort for a host of other popular devices from different manufacturers. Even the Android community is actively updating the popular open source firmware such as CyanogenMod and MIUI for ICS. I just spotted a slightly older but interesting article on CNET that talks about the upgrade path and release schedule of the Android 4.0 for the devices from Google, HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung and Sony. Plans from the most vendors seems sketchy at best at this time but at least it provides a general guideline on when and which devices to expect to be updated to the latest ICS release from Google by the respective device manufacturers.

Google has already been confirmed to bring the Ice Cream Sandwich update to the Nexus S. In fact, there is already unofficial port available online if you feel adventurous to play with it. Unfortunately Nexus One will not be able to get the official update of ICS as HTC has pointed out that device is too old to get the Android 4.0 update. So far, there is no official time frame when the official update will be available for the Nexus S.

Got ICS on Saturday for my Nexus S 4G

@Juggernaut: I received an OTA upgrade for ICS 4.0.3 on the 17th. The install took about ten minutes.

Android and Me reported that it started rolling out Friday evening (Dec 16) - http://goo.gl/GjlyS

Thanks!

Glad to hear you've been updated. Yea, I'm aware it may take up to a month to get the update. I have to say I'm chopping at the bit a little bit as GB is pretty bland.

I've been waiting for ICS to see what it's like before I root my device. Played with it for a few minutes on the Galaxy Nexus, but not enough to really get a handle.

Ah well, I'll wait for it.

@WAASup

Did you have just background data on, or do you need the Auto Sync as well?

I had both on.

Are you asking about settings related to getting the update? Of people I know with the Nexus S 4G, one got ICS 2 days after me, 2 others are still waiting... I have no idea how the update rolls out.

You can manually check for an update in Settings, About Phone. I don't know the default interval for when the system performs a check.

Thanks again

I do know about the 'shortcut' to check it, but wasn't sure if auto sync was required as well.

Like I've said, I'm chopping on the bit for this one!

OTA updates go out in waves (based on IMEI)

as far as I know, all carriers are pushing over-the-air (OTA) updates in waves based on recipients device IMEI address, in sort of segments or blocks, adding more with each day/week.

so if you have 2 devices with very close IMEI addresses (e.g. only last 2-3 digits different) then most likely both devices will get updated at same time, otherwise dates will differ.

ehhhhh ... I'm still hoping HTC releases the official ICS update for my over year old T-Mobile G2 ... waiting until Feb 2012, if they don't then I root it and go with CyanogenMod9...

I'd be pleasantly surprised if the G2 ends up getting ICS (if only because it's technically end-of-life'd by T-Mobile); if we see an official ICS build for the G2, it'll probably be for its European twin the Desire Z (and probably will require rooting).

Then again, I was also pleasantly surprised when T-Mo sent the OTA radio update in October, so maybe holding my expectations low is a Good Thing in this case grin

That said--there's already a (non-Cyanogenmod) port of ICS available for the G2 via XDA Developers, and now that Cyanogenmod has ported its base over to ICS...we'll get our Ice Cream Sandwiches one way or another grin

(Rooted my phone long ago (back when the initial Gingerbread leak came out) and am now running ILWT CM7, so OTA updates aren't an option in my case. Besides, rooting means I can put 4Ext Recovery on the phone (a much superior alternative to Clockworkmod as a recovery) and rooting makes life generally much easier. grin)

ICS one way or another :)

me too smile

I contacted HTC directly and they didn't say no, but also they did not officially confirm it gets the update per se either. still having my hopes up smile

anyways, rooting is not a problem for me. I know how to achieve a temporary root on GingerBread, did it once when I got stuck with a leaked GB install (not an update) which was bad and was a dead end ultimately LOL! had to go back to Froyo to get the phone updated to proper GB update (one before the last one in OCT '11).

I hear you with backup & restore tools available for rooted phones. I am missing those on official ROMs, so I aid myself only with apps for backing up specific things like AppBrain for apps, SMS Backup+ for messages and Call Logs and so on (rest of settings is stored on SD card) ... my only problem is layout of my home screen shortcuts which is not backed up and a PITA to restore if you have over 100 apps wink

I will root it for good if our G2 don't get the official ICS, I'm there with you on this one smile
