redlight poi checkout for nuvi50lm

I entered a manual redlight poi to checkout the function on my new nuvi50lm.

file name Redlight-My-Home

file content

-85.0000,27.0000,My Home

Actual values for home are not listed here.

Does anyone see a reason this should not work??

Did you load it with POI Loader?

My Home should be in quotes like this -

"My Home"

Did you load it with POI Loader?

The coordinates should be near a road, within 50 feet for reliable operation, and you can simulate driving toward the POI.

exactly what do you hope to accomplish?

Just what are your expectations? You will receive a visual alert with just what you have posted assuming of course you correctly loaded the POI and enabled the unit to provide alerts. You may receive a 'Bong' when you come near, but without knowing what your input is, we can't be certain. The default distance is approximately 400 meters if you are traveling on toward the point on the same street.

The best thing for you to do though is to read through the FAQs and understand how POI work a little better before charging off and attempting to run this test. Can we assume you have read the FAQs on how to load POI and checked POI Loader on how it works?

I don't think it needs quotes, only needed if there is a coma within the POI name.

E.G. -85.0000,27.0000,"My Home, City, State"

Try it both ways

slblair can try it both ways and see if it loads.

My expectations are to have

My expectations are to have an alert on my GPS when I get close to home.

I have read the FAQ and am using POI loader to load.

Look in the GPS menu

To see if the POI loaded, look in Where To?, Extras, Custom POIs. You should see the name of the POI there. If not, it didn't load.

This is a new unit and the menus may not be exactly like I said, but there will be some way to view the Custom POIs.

This is a proximity alert - she will alert you before you crash into the house!

Thanks for all the

Thanks for all the inputs.

Found the problem.

I only had 4 digits after the decimal point on one of my locations (latitude). Changed it to 5 and it works great.

OPERATOR ERROR....lol

Exactly what was your problem?

You never have said exactly what your problem was but having only 4 digits after the decimal point will not cause a Redlight proximity alert to not work.

Based on input coordinate precision only, the accuracy of the distance where the alert is triggered will be about +/- 36 feet with 4 digits and would be about +/- 3.6 feet with 5 digits.

Note that that the word "redlight" causes the alert to sound ¼ mile (1320 feet) away from the alert coordinates, and if you are traveling 30 miles per hour you would travel 44 feet in one second, so +/- 36 feet accuracy rather than +/- 3.6 feet accuracy would hardly be noticeable.

EDIT:
On second thought, if your coordinates to 5 decimal places puts your "home" some distance away from the street, an additional 36 feet due to using 4 decimal places could put your home over 50 feet away from the street and that would cause the alert to not trigger.

Still, if you created your home coordinates to the middle of the street in front of your home, then it probably would not matter if you use 4 or 5 digit precision.

If you want to the alert to not be so sensitive to the distance away from the street the coordinates places your home, it would be better to use a Tourguide alert instead of the redlight alert.

@slblair, please help

@slblair, we very much appreciate your feedback on your problem. Often we never find out what worked.

Still, like Evert, I find it hard to believe that it was the number of decimals per se. As Evert explained, it could be the location of the coordinates coupled with the lesser accuracy that caused the problem.

If you could put the coordinates of your home at the intersection of the street and your driveway and do simulations with both 4 decimals and with 5 decimals and then report the results, it would be appreciated.

Thanks and welcome aboard.

Coordinates not accurate

If the coordinates were not placed in the middle of the street but in the driveway, and if the missing 5th decimal was a "9," then it is possible the POI was too far away.
