How do I get a new .GPX file for my 1490

In trying to gain space I used the suggestion of removing files I don't need from /help, etc. That all seemed to go well, but even though I deleted lots of files and should have gained plenty of space I don't appear to have anymore space than when I began loading POIs.
On a whim I turned on the Garmin and looked at Points of Interest. The POIs I loaded are in the .GPX file as duplicated. I added a list of Walmarts, Sam's, Ryans, etc. and now they are there in multiples.
I didn't know that the POIs were added to the .GPX file. Now I want to get back to the original and don't know where to get .GPX as delivered when I updated the maps.
No, I did not back up the Garmin before loading POIs. Since learning more I have made a backup.
Help!!!
The CURRENT.GPX file covers
The CURRENT.GPX file covers all your favorites and as you may have guessed, has nothing to do with the map update. Further, the default favorites on nüvi devices consists of the three Garmin offices in the US, Europe and Asia. If you copy the CURRENT.GPX file back to the device, you ended up duplicating your entries since the device copies the contents of CURRENT.GPX into the device's hidden memory store and merges the entries with whatever previously exists in the favorites memory.
Your only real option is to go through the file by hand and delete the duplicates one by one since you didn't backup the CURRENT.GPX file. This will fix the favorites file, but afterward I do not recommend putting the WalMarts and other files back into the favorites file. Read up on this site how to use POI Loader and use that program load the POIs for your favorite stores (which should also be available for download on the site) into the Extras menu. That is where the custom POIs are stored.
Now...last thing here: did you touch the voice directory? To gain the most space, keep the English voices you like best and remove all the voices from the unit that you will never use, namely the foreign voices. You'll find them in that directory.

I didn't put anything in
I didn't put anything in "Favorites." When I loaded my custom POIs using the POI Loader they went in Extras as custom POIs.
What I had in mind is deleting the .gpx from main memory and reloading it from wherever it is available.
Manually removing duplicates is an option but how does one delete an entry in the .gpx file? and, would I really want to do that with thousands of Walmart, Ryans, etc.?
Delete favorites?

I'm not exactly sure of what you're trying to do. I'm also not sure if your 1490 works as older nuvis do.
But if you're trying to delete your Favorites quickly rather than deleting them one by one, see if this works: Tap Tools/MyData then tap Delete Favorite(s) for a quick way to delete them. As S_A stated, Favorites on a nuvi straight from Garmin contain only the Garmin office sites which I can't imagine anyone really needs, so deleting all favorites through MyData may be a quick fix for you if I understand what you're trying to do.
If you have Mapsource or BaseCamp on your computer, I'll advise that you Import your Favorites to the computer in case you deletion of them on the nuvi does more than you intended to do. That'll allow a quick reinstallation if needed.
SD card
I think the OP has loaded POI files to an SD card multiple times using POI Loader.

I'm not trying to get rid of
I'm not trying to get rid of Favorites.
My Garmin supplied "Points of Interest" (.gpx) file is loaded with thousands of duplicate entries. It is not feasible to manually mark them as errors so they do not appear again. Therefore, I need to either be able to delete the entire .gpx file (as supplied by Garmin) and replace it with a virgin file or have a way of editting it on my PC so I can search and delete all duplicates.
I don't know how the duplicates found their way into the file. I hope they did not come that way from Garmin butmaybe they did. I understand that there may be duplicates if the name is slightly different or the location is off on one of them by a very small difference, errors happen, but these duplicates are totally the same. At least as far as I can see.
.
I'm confused by you saying that your unit has a "Garmin supplied GPX file with 'Points of Interest'".
Is this a new offering from Garmin? This is not something they supplied on units in the past. The built in Points of Interest are part of the map data and not a separate file.
And they are not editable by the user (other than the units that support error reporting).
So where is this "file" and where did it come from?
Thank you for clearing this
Thank you for clearing this up for me. I am guilty of making a rash assumption that the Points of Interest were in the gpx file. I can see now that they are a part of the map and the only way to eliminate duplicates is manually by tagging them as an error. I guess I will have to live with them coming up. The bulk of them are Walmart stores and I can use a separate POI file for those if I want to find one and not see the duplicates.
I very seldom use the points
I very seldom use the points of interest that are built in to the garmin as part of the map data. I strictly use the custom poi's downloaded from here.

Huh?

When you use a custom POI file, and you search from 'Extras', that's all you get. No Garmin POI's at all...

When you say that POIs are "duplicated", what icons do you press to get to a screen that shows dupilicates?
Are you looking in Favorites? built-ins? Custom POIs?
As far as .gpx files on a Nuvi are concerned (in the [nuvi]\Garmin\GPX folder), I have seen a few which were created by my 765T. In one of my backups, I find one called "position.gpx" (which EPE shows to be my "home" location). My understanding is that position.gpx is your last location when you removed your device from the cradle with power on (may be ofher times when it is created).
Another .gpx file that my Nuvi creates is "Current.gpx". Note that this is an "output" file that is not read by the Nuvi. Is is a sort of backup copy of your favorites. Garmin says that you can save your favorites to your computer by using Basecamp or MapSource to copy them from your device.
Note however, that if you want to restore favorites to your device, you must rename the "current.gpx" file to some name other than "Current.gpx" file when you copy it back. Gary Hayman suggests using Current1.gpx.
External programs that send waypoints to your device use names like temp.gpx. The device will read (one time only, I believe) all .gpx files not named "Current.gpx" when you turn on your device. Then the device will create anew the file called "Current.gpx".
One way to get duplicate POI files into "Custom POIs" is to use POILoader to load then again and again giving each POILOader run a new output file name. It used to be that POILoader ALWAYS created a file called poi.gpi regardless of what you wanted. Now it allows you to "name" the .gpi file that it creates. The device does not care if there are several files that point to a particular POI location. It will dutifully show you each and every one. Also note that many of the locations you put in through POILoader will also be in the built in POIs. However, when an establishment goes out of business, it may be years before it will be removed from the built-ins. Further, when brand new locations are built, it may be years (if ever) before they are added to the built-ins. No one seems to be sure exactly what criteria is used to include a location in the built-ins.
@joco1330 - give us some more details so that we can eliminate your duplicate problem.
I still have duplicates but
I still have duplicates but have learned that they are in the map downloaded from Garmin. As I understand there is no way other than reporting each extra as an error. I can do that by selecting on of the dups and touching the balloon that pops up. With that I have the option of FEEDBACK which gives me the alternative of reporting an error.
Actually, when I looked closely at what appears as a duplicate the same store at the same physical location has a different phone number in each replica.
The Tim Hortons file from
The Tim Hortons file from here is like that because it came from the Tim Hortons site before they shut that section down. It has duplicates and even triplicates that are either a phone number difference or a minor name difference. The maintainer is working on getting that cleaned up.

@joco1330, thanks for the information.
