Continuation of "NA 2012.30 is available"

I'm confused. I've been following the discussion about the Junction View file that either does or does not get downloaded as part of the NA 2012 maps.

I got a Nuvi 1450 and lifetime maps in July of 2010 and had a fully functional Junction View on the 1450 straight out of the box. After a map upgrade (I forget which one), I lost JV.

Anyway, the thread at
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34881
talks about having a copy of D3060040A.JCV in a folder named JCV. The correct size of the file is 775K. I downloaded that file to my PC just to have it. Now for my conundrum.

As far as I can see, I've never had either the D30600x0A.JCV file or the JCV folder on the 1450.

o Does JV use different names on a 1450?
o Does the 1450 have that file and folder at all?
o Can I safely add the JCV folder and the .JCV file into the 1450 hierarchy somewhere?
o What am I missing?

I just want my working Junction View back.

Continuation...

I forgot to mention that I downloaded the NA 2012.30 maps last night and the navigation part seems to work just fine; but I haven't been anywhere to see if Junction View works. I do know that the .JCV file and its folder are NOT anywhere I can see on the 1450.

JCV on 14xx.

Yes, you can get the full JCV file to work on your 1450, but it may require a micro SD card to create enough free space for the file. I suggest you review the 4 tutorials written by forum member Lilla. They will tell you how to back up your nuvi, how to clean up unnecessary files to open up space, and how to install maps, including the JCV file. The tutorials were written specifically for the 1490, but they will apply to your 1450 as well.

.

2012.30 should install a JCV file in the .System\JCV folder. This is a hidden system folder that is not shown by default. To show it in Explorer, you have to go to Tools, Folder Options, View and select show hidden files and folders, and uncheck Hide protected operating system files.

Junction View on NA 2012.30

Okay, I had the opportunity to check out the status of the Junction View function on my Nuvi 1450 with NA 2012.30 installed. The result? JV's back. Not only is it back, it's better than ever. I'm now getting JV's in places I wasn't before the upgrade. I like my 1450 again.

A side comment:
Know what's sad? It's sad that I'm grateful to Garmin for fixing something that shouldn't have needed fixing in the first place. Talk about a love/hate relationship. That's what I feel about Garmin.

JCV folder

Thanks, WAASup. I didn't know that the JCV folder is hidden, so that's cleared up.

As it turns out, I didn't have to do anything special to regain Junction View with the 2012.30 upgrade. I did the upgrade and viola!, there is was. I haven't experienced any issues with the upgrade (yet).

Just curious, were you able to fit the full NA map upgrade (NA2012.30) plus the full JVC file (D3060040A.JCV) in your 1450? Or did you put the JVC in the micro SD card?

No SD card involved

I don't own an SD card, so, no, everything fit inside the unit - the entire U.s. and Canada. However, before I started the upgrade, I got rid of a lot of stuff I knew I didn't need.

JCV

I think synctronic was asking if you were able to fit the large JCV file named D3060040A.JCV on your nuvi (copied in after the map update), or are you just using the small JCV file that was installed with the map update.

Put Larger JCV on microSD card

@synctronic: I put the large JCV file on a microSD card as it wouldn't fit on my Nuvi 1490.

My 1490

I have the 757MB JCV on my SD card. I now have only 280MB free on my 1490. For reasons that I don't understand, I do not have the western provinces on my unit.

Check

Make sure you don't have the JCV file on your unit still. You may also want to do a hard reset to clear any trash from the GPS.

I've got the smaller .JCV file after all

WAASup, I followed your instructions and discovered that I have the 45K Junction View file on my 1450. I downloaded the larger, 775K, version to my PC. I'd like to copy the larger file to the GPSr but I have a concern. The two files have different names.
The 45K file's name is D3153040A.JCV. The 775K file's name is D3060040A.JCV. Can I merely rename the larger file to the smaller file's name and have it magically work?
I would, of course, save the smaller file first in case something bad should hit the fan.

JCV file

I always rename the original JCV file to disable it, I change the file extension name to read .OLDJCV, then I installed the larger JCV file, I don't change the name of the larger JCV file. This is my security in case there's something wrong with the larger JCV file, I can always go back to my original JCV file, just rename the file back to .JCV.

.

Add the new JCV file as is. No need to change the name.

Two things to check

First, how much free space is on your nuvi right now? Add the 45K if you delete the small jcv file. Is the free space now large enough to hold the 775K file? If so, how much free space is left after adding the large jcv file? Given that future maps tend to be larger and you want to be able to install as much of the new map as possible, you want to see several hundred MB of free space before starting the next update in three months or so. A better option may be to install the large 775K jcv file to an SD card. Check the site here for instructions or get back to us if you plan to do this.

Second, I think the 775K file is intended for full-screen displays on 4.3" nuvi models. Does your 1450 currently do split-screen Junction Views or full screen? If applied to nuvis with other dimensions, some distortion may be seen (but, even if seen and undesirable, you can always go back to your previous jcv file that you saved so it's worth a try).

Other 1450 owners who have installed bigger jcv files should chime in here.

To your other question, no you won't rename the large jcv to be that of the smaller one you now have. Keep the file names provided by Garmin.

Good luck and report back with your decision and results.

Do you mean 45mb and 775mb files? I'm confused

yea

Very good. This should help a lot of people. Again there should be a link for these frequently asked questions

Maybe I'll leave it be

CraigW, the Nuvi 1450 has a larger screen and displays a full-screen Junction View. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, since going to 2012.30, the JV that went missing with the last update is back and better than ever with this release. Think I'll just go with what is currently working.
Of course, knowing Garmin, I might revisit this topic after the NEXT update when JV doesn't work again. But at least all you responders showed how to resolve the issue. Thanks to all.
Oh, and by the way, I don't have anywhere near enough free space on the 1450 to install the 775M file internally, so I'll have to put it on an SD card if it comes to that.
One more musing: if I merely add the second, larger .JCV file and leave the first one on the unit, too, why would the unit know to use the larger file and not continue to use the usual, smaller file?

Delete or rename

To use the large jcv file on the SD card, you have two options:

You can delete the file on the nuvi (keeping a copy on your computer, of course)

or

You can rename the nuvi file. I renamed mine something like D..........40A.JCV.old.

Keep a copy

I just wanted to add, make a backup before you do anything else....

If your GPS is working now, best to save a copy somewhere. If you don't have the disk space, burn it to a DVD. Murphy's law specifically states "you will not need a backup if you have one... if you don't have one, you will surely need it some day'.

The stupidity of Garmin

The stupidity of Garmin never ceases to amaze me.

I have several 1490LMT Garmin's.

With LTM on the dowloaded 2012.30 I get Canada and limited JCV on my download. No US and no Mexico which came on the original map set installed directly from Garmin's factory.

Going "other" routes I have the full North America (Canada, US & Mexico and the full 757MB JCV) all installed on my Micro SD card. I have an 8 GB card...but Garmin doesn't care to check for the card, UNLESS they are trying to "sell" you a map set on a SD card.

ARrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh

775K file look good on my full screen 1490

Second, I think the 775K file is intended for full-screen displays on 4.3" nuvi models. Does your 1450 currently do split-screen Junction Views or full screen? quote]

With the 775k file I get a lot more JV's in my area. I copied the smaller supplied jcv onto my computer and deleted it from my system folder in my 1490 nuvi with the 5" display. The larger 775k file is on my 8GB micro sd card along with all my custom POI's and JPEG's. All is working fine.

It's slightly stretched, but quite readable. Better than the 1/3 size of the split screen.
