WebUpdate and Battery Charged?

Just curious.

Everytime I update system or maps, I see a warning to ensure the GPS battery is fully charged before continuing.

Maybe I'm missing something, but my two GPS's (1490T & 260) both seem to charge while connected to the computer via USB cable.

I say this because the battery level seems higher after disconnecting.

Is the warning outdated?

Roy

Outdated?

I wouldn't call it outdated, maybe just not needed in most cases. If you disconnect the unit during the update then the unit could become a paperweight. The idea might be to reduce the amount of current the unit draws during the update which would reduce the chance of the computer shutting down the USB port because of a high current draw.

This is just a WAG on my part but it does make sense.

I'd say your guess is probably accurate. If the GPS became a paperweight, they could then say that they warned you. Similar to burning yourself on a cup of coffee at McDonalds, they have a warning label that the contents may be hot.

software update install is not actually done until disconnect

That is because the completion of the software update install is not actually done until you disconnect from the USB port. If the battery is low the software install may not complete before the battery runs out and you will end up with a bricked useless unit.

Wasn't considering install

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of the update, not the later install.

Warning During Map Updates?

Roy, are you sure you are getting the warning during a map update? We don't have to unplug the GPS from the PC to complete a map update.

Wasn't considering install

Thank you I didn't know that.
