Using the warn when near POI (on TomTom)

Do I need to have a destination planned before I can usr the "warn when near POI"? I know how to set it so it makes a sound. I just didn't know if I can just set it to go off when I drive near the designated POI. I am referring mainly to Redbox and Navy Federal Credit Unions. Thank you.

POI's not along your route

Be careful with off route POI alerts.

On start-up of POI-loader select manual mode. When loading Redbox or Navy FCU's I don't see any reason not to set alert at 2 miles or even further.

However Mcdonalds, Wendy's, Starbucks, etc, better to set at 1 mile or less. There are too many of this type of POI near one another and could repeatedly alert blocking GPS direction call out. I've found this to be a nuisance.

It's a TomTom

The Principle Is The Same

The precise steps may be a bit different, but the principle is the same. As noted above, you don't need to have a route planned to receive POI alerts. However, you'll only get the alerts that have "Warn only if POI is on route" unchecked. And, if your alert distance is large you could get notified of POIs that are considerably out of your way.

There is at least one exception

I have run into an exception to that statement.

I have my unit set to warn about Red Light cameras only if on the route. However, there are some red light cameras at an intersection of streets that is right next to where one of those streets passes underneath a freeway bridge. This location triggers an alert every time I drive that section of freeway.

Your unit, and almost all automotive units do not recognize the Z or height coordinate. Therefore different levels of roadway are treated the same, as if they were flat on the ground.
