tinnitus

Anyone have it?

I can't remember a time when I didn't have tinnitus, between riding motorcycles, driving trucks and loud music, it's always been there.

Mine is almost identical to this "8kHz triangle wave". I've had it so long it doesn't bother me in a mental type way, just makes it hard for me to hear some things.

right ear only

I have tinnitus in my right ear only. I have had it for about three years.

It sounds like bacon frying on the stove. It comes and goes and I have just integrated the sounds into my life.

I think I damaged the hairs in my ear by standing in front of our speakers while singing at assisted livings, nursing home, Alzheimer's facilities, etc. for 20 something years.

Me too

A number of years ago the first time I ever noticed it was in Mexico one evening. I thought those damn crickets are getting awfully loud and went outside to see if I could find them.

Well it turned out to be tinnitus. But it comes and goes it is not a constant problem. What brings it on I do not know.

Yep, I have it

After basic training, MP school, and Vietnam, all without hearing protection, I have almost constant ringing in my years. I have had this condition for probably 30 years or more. Anymore, it’s just a constant way of life.

Had mine for 30 years

I have had my tinnitus for about 30 years. It has become worse over the years. I think jet airplanes are flying over our house. There have been many times I ask if there are there. I found that I can put my fingers in my ears and if the sound is still there and as loud I know it is just me.
I have new hearing aids that stop the tinnitus. I don't have any tinnitus unless I have my hearing aids off. They are so nice!!

Same Thing Here

I'm in the same boat as you Melaqueman. At times, no noises at all but at other times the noise comes around. I have no idea why I hear noises sometimes and not at other times. I rather prefer the no-noise times. grin

I've Had it

In both ears for as long as I can remember. The right is worse than the left and it comes and goes in severity.

My doctor told me to have a few alcoholic drinks and it may subside. I thought he was kidding but I tried it and surprisingly, it actually works! After 2 or 3 beers, the ringing completely disappears! Unfortunately, it comes back after I "sober up". I'm not a big drinker though but now I have an excuse. Doctors orders!

I mentioned it on my next visit and the doctor told me I was one of the
people on whom it helps. Others say it makes tinnitus worse and some notice no difference.

Mine is 24-7 has been for as a long as I can remember. I'd be one of the ones your doctors solution would have it make it worse. I'm allergic to alcohol, I break out in handcuffs.

my tinnitus has been screaming ever since

When my poor hearing caused me to go to an ENT Doc I was tested and prescribed hearing aids. The test indicated that it was likely caused by working in a factory. One ear had a deep null at about 1KHz. This was probably from two summer jobs as a longshoreman in a sugar refinery in the mid '60s.

When my hearing aids were fitted (~7 years ago?) I was told that they may have a beneficial effect on my tinnitus. About a year ago I noticed that my tinnitus was minimal! Then, then,,, in September we went to a cousins reunion in Texas held at a restaurant and there were 44 attendees. It was exceedingly noisy for >3 hours and my tinnitus has been screaming ever since.

This getting old

Really sucks big time !

Tinnitus: I've had it for 10 years or more years now in both ears. Initially, it was sort of a high-frequency whoosh, but it really is hard for me to describe correctly. Starting a couple of years ago, one ear also has occasionally added something along the lines of a bunch of small songbirds in a nearby tree settling in for the night and chattering. I'm really quite used to it and it doesn't bother me. What does annoy me is that I've not been a loud music listener or had any other experiences that should lead to tinnitus or hearing loss.

I did enjoy the YouTube link as I heard NOTHING. I went to the YouTuber's Channel and as hoped, I found multiple frequencies and multiple waveforms offered.

Yikes, my hearing aids let me hear the various 6k frequencies but probably at a lower volume than it should be. I can hear the 5k without my aids but at a lower volume than with them. Even with the aids, starting at 7-8k, I hear nothing. Without the aids, even the 6k is silent.

But then, my PC's speakers and smart TV's sound bar aren't calibrated for clinical use. I am due for another hearing test in a few months so maybe I'll have my high frequency boost increased.

For those of you with hearing aids, or without but you think you may need them, a visit to the YouTuber's Channel and trying different frequencies may give you something to comtemplate.

Hate It

I totally hate it. I can't remember the last time I experienced silence. Some peace and quiet would be nice.

I'm pretty used to mine so although it's always there, and at the same volume, sometimes I just don't notice it.

Peace and quiet. Not sure I remember at time with complete silence. In fact, when trying to sleep, it can be too quiet, I need the noise of a fan to sleep a little more soundly, pun intended.

I was surprised to finally find a sound that matches my tinnitus pretty much exactly like. At another place in cyberspace there is a similar thread that pointed to that youtube channel. .

At lower volume I don't hear the youtube wav. I can increase the volume to match mine exactly. In other words I get the volume to a point when looking directly at my speakers I barely hear it but as I turn my head away I can hear it as if I am listening to stereo and switching channels.

It is great to allow my wife to finally hear what I hear 24-7, and at the volume I hear it.

Here's a Windows based small program that does something similar.

Yup, have had it for quite

Yup, have had it for quite awhile as well. Comes and goes, for me sounds like a high pitched whine.

24/7

Have had it for years. Never stops. Probably due to attending concerts in my younger days without using ear protection, and riding/racing motorcycles.

Seems like there are two distinct tones to mine, one higher and one lower. They kind of weave in and out between the two.

At this point in my life I've pretty much given up hope for a cure. Just kind of try to ignore it as much as possible these days.

Tinnitus

Even with my hearing aids in, like CraigW, I don't hear anything in that video linked to here. My tinnitus drowns it out. Which may mean that I have the same type. My tinnitus is due to too-loud music and power tools. It's at a moderate level and doesn't really bother me except that it's loud enough to block out low-talkers, whisperers, most songbirds that other people can hear, as well as that video.

Tinnitis since 1991

Of course tinnitus is forever. During my photo studio years, I covered it with jazz and did quite well. Since retiring, 22 years ago, it has continued and I guard my hearing by having NR30 ear muff all around just like people have close up glasses.

I have a Bobcat skid loader I use occasionally and never climb into it without ear protection.

Soo... you cannot fix it, but you can preserve as much as you can by avoiding loud noise.

Hearing protection

Absolutely. I'm also very careful now to wear hearing protection when using any kind of noisy power equipment and to keep music playback volume down low.

Two things I regret not paying better attention to my parents' advice: not taking better preventative care of my hearing... and my teeth. Turns out they were right /shockface

Nobody here is asking, but just in case you're wondering, vitamin supplements, homeopathic remedies, etc. that are marketed to treat or prevent worsening tinnitus are pure snake-oil hokum designed to reduce the bankrolls of desperate patients. There is no substance you can take that has been shown to reduce or prevent progression of tinnitus. There is research ongoing in the area, along the lines of regenerating damaged nervous system components, so all hope is not lost, but nothing proven yet.

more tinnitus

bullpup ejection port right under the right ear, not much use of hearing protection on two-way rifle ranges
better on the left side
now I wear plugs and muffs whenever there is any chance

A two-way rifle range??? That sounds worse than a figure-eight car race.
