Thanks for letting us know.

Thanks for letting us know.

For anyone

For anyone that has missed the ability to transfer routes and waypoints from Mapsource to the 3790, I can confirm that this update does finally fix that problem.

The one thing I have noticed however is that when you transfer a route to the GPS it may take 'minutes' for it to appear in Trip Planner. So don't be discouraged if it appears that your route transfer didn't work. Wait a few minutes and it will most likely magically pop up in the Unscheduled Trips list.

I like my 3790 better after the update.

Currently have: SP3, GPSMAP 276c, Nuvi 760T, Nuvi 3790LMT, Zumo 660T

?

Why does everyone call it Firmware???
It's not. It's software. Firmware is what allows you to load software..low level code. Not gonna get into details. 3790's came with firmware version 2.60. I haven't seen a Firmware update on any GPS yet. We are updating software from Version 4.30 to 4.50

FW

FW is the intermediary between SW and HW. It re-instructs the SW to run the HW in a certain manner.

Didn't wanna get into this....thanks Juggernaut

Firmware is extremely low level code that is required to make a computer work if all other software was deleted. Without firmware you could not reload the system. It takes code to tell the computer to read the initialization code on a CD for example.

Firmware makes a part run. Software is something that makes the part do something else. Example: firmware makes the cd drive work, but the software makes it burn.

Software is the stuff that you, as the user, put into your computer in order to do things like word processing, or internet browsing if we use a Computer for example. You can add and delete software essentially whenever you want.

Firmware is the stuff that manufacturers put into the sub-parts of the computer, simply to give each piece the instructions that it needs to run.

That's what I said...

...in simpler terms.

However, I guess we'll have to leave this be for the sanctity of the forum, right?

On the other hand it's been called firmware, here and on a lot of other sites, since the first Nuvi came out in 2005.

What does any of this have to do with a discussion about version 4.50 of whatever you want to call it. rolleyes

Just calling it what it is, and not what it isn't.

Firmware vs Software

There is no perfect answer. I have been writing firmware and software for the past 30 years (Yes, since the beginning of what we call computers).

Here's my thought:

1- Anything we write on a computer is "software". We all agree to that.

2- Firmware is a bit tricky. On micro-controllers that access low-level hardware like peripherals, we also agree that this is firmware. Firmware is a low level code written by a company to interface with their hardware.

Maybe firmware does not normally have a user interface. Maybe "software" normally runs over an operating system (which you may call "firmware").

I would say that GPS runs both firmware and software. It is just that the low-level drivers and OS are not separated from the user application and they are released as a whole. I am pretty sure Garmin has an engineering team that develop software and firmware.

How should we call it then? Your pick. It can be either software or firmware. Seriously guys, it does not matter much. I cannot even decide myself. I would say that Garmin is doing both firmware and software.

Even Garmin does not know how to call it. In the Inventory, it says Boot block software, X-Loader Software and System Software. Clearly, the boot and X-Loader are not software. The "firmware" name is a technical term not well known by the normal (non-technical) users. Calling it "Software" is certainly the best way to be understood by the mass. I think this is the reason why they use this term.

My 2 cents on the subject...

nuvi 37xx series firmware v4.50 released

You know, firmware or software, who cares as long as it does the job. That is my 2 cent on the subject.

bricks and stones Will break my bones

I look at it in simplistic terms; if when loading it to the PC I screw it up and only affects the program being uploaded I call it software, if in the other hand if it turns he PC into a brick I call it firmware.

So using my rule if you screw up the upload of v4.50 release to the Nuvi it will turn it into a skipping stone therefore it is firmware.

IT Jargon

Although Speed2 may be technically correct, the definition of words in IT seems to be whatever the user wabts it to be. After all, "firmware" is just IT jargon - and that seems to change from day to day confused

I started playing with computers when we used tape and punch cards back in the arly 70s and have learned to just let the buzz word flow by.
