I got a note from another user who mentioned this site worked for him:

http://media.io/

I don't have any first hand experience with it.

why online?

When there are dozens of free programs you can download?

I use Audacity on PC and Mac... it does a lot more than just convert... you can record & edit as well.

+1 for Audacity. I use it for cassette transfers to PC, and use its tools extensively to fix audio if it needs fixing, especially removing tape hiss.

It's also terrific for editing songs to create ringtones on cell phones. smile

a little off topic

This is what I use to create my WAV sounds for Red Light Camera and Rest Areas Combined.

Although neither my wife nor I like Jill as the guidance voice I use Jill for the warnings Warning Red Light Camera Ahead or Rest Area Coming Up in two miles

I play the sound and pick it up with a mike near the speaker into Windows Sound Recorder

Aha, Jill does on this site exactly what Jill (and no one else) does on my GPS:

If the word "left" appears in the middle of a sentence, it sounds correct.

But if "left" appears at the end of a sentence as in "Arriving at home, on left." it sounds something like "rapt" to me.

For me, it's only Jill and only the word left that does this--but it's annoying enough to me that I use alternate voices and avoid Jill. It's still odd to me that one word can be pronounced two ways but the same voice engine.

I use Karen, and her

I use Karen, and her occasional mispronunciation of "route" as "rout-ee" occasionally gets on my nerves.

Edit it

Use the voice editor and change it to 'root'. Remember, it's all (voices) by phonetics. Use it to your advantage.

I would have done that,

I would have done that, except by my way of thinking it doesn't solve the underlying problem, which is that the Karen voice doesn't consistently pronounce "route" as "rout". In fact the mispronunciation only happens occasionally, so I'm more concerned with what is triggering the mispronunciation than the mispronunciation itself.

I never used Jill

We found Jill annoying from the get go in late 2007 when I got my 260, we settled for Jack and now with my 2460 still using Jack or his twin brother because he sure doesn’t pronounce the same.
Example near my daughter’s house is a street named Montague and Jack in my 260 butchers the name however Jack in 2460 pronounces it as it should be.

Thanks

Thanks django, not everyone wants to install editors and fool around with that stuff just to convert a file type. I have an editor here but sometimes it's easier to just use an online conversion program for audio and video changes. Just depends. Thanks again.

Thanks...

Cool site. But all I get from my Nuvi 255 is a ding.

The 255 will give you voice

The 255 will give you voice alerts using wav and sox.exe see. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

On the other hand, not everyone wants to have to upload a file to another site, convert it there and then download it back just to do a conversion that you can more quickly do on your own system. My own thought on this was that Audacity was the right tool to use, and it is a free handy tool that I feel everyone should have. But for those with a phobia for installing anything new, you may find that you already have something that will do this, at least if you have anything installed on your system that can play mp3 files. For example, if you play mp3s via WinAmp, WinAmp can make a WAV from a mp3 for you. Just look at options->preferences->output for details.

Of course, there are some who just refuse to learn anything new, but they will never do the conversion. You either have to learn to use a Website (that you might not have access to in the future) or to use a tool. I would rather use a tool. And Audacity does so much more, very simply and easily, that there is just no reason to be afraid to use it.I'm not sure what editor you are using, but if it is easier to use a website than the editor, you may have a bad editor. With Audacity i can just drag the mp3 in and then save the wav where I want it.

Audacity Portable

I also have qualms about "installing" myriads of software on my computer - which is why I look for "portable" versions of software. They can be run from the folder in which they reside and so do not run the risk of conflicting with other software already installed on my machine.

There is a "portable" version of Audacity. get it at http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/audacity_portable

Convert mp3 to wav

Thanks everyone. I am new to the GPS world, & appreciate your suggestions. oddcast looks like a fun tool. I plan to install Audacity & play with it.
